I've just started playing EU2 again with my new computer and home network. I'm using a Netgear WGR614 router, which obviously functions as a NAT.

So my problem is this. I've read the forums and Microsoft's page on the subject, and I'm forwarding traffic from ports 2300-2400 and 47624 to my PC. I'm able to connect to VNet, talk to people, and join the game without any issue. Once in the game setup area, I can talk to people again without issue and people read my text, etc. And then when the game's started, it all looks good, I can click in and start the game, and the clock moves relatively in synch with everyone, and I can talk to everybody.

Now this is the weird part. I can move troops in the game. And another player will SEE me moving my troops. But the part that's not functioning is the 'diplomatic' part... if someone sends me an offer such as a royal marriage, and I accept it, they won't get any response, and the royal marriage won't take affect. Likewise, if I send a royal marriage offer to someone, they won't see the offer. The only effect is that I am then unable to send diplomats to that country (because the diplomat is 'on his way' - presumably a detail recorded client side).
Gifts have the same problem. I can send a gift to someone, but it won't be deducted from my treasury and they won't receive the gift (because it's not being 'processed').
I haven't exhaustively tried all the diplomatic options - just the common ones. But I expect they will all have a similar problem.

I've tried it with different hosts, with no change.
I've also opened up extra ports 'just in case' - like 28800 to 29000 that some people say may be needed - and also the ports that VNet uses (even though I wasn't having specific problems with VNet). Hasn't helped.

Disconnecting my router and connecting directly allows me to play without any difficulties, so it's not related to my software.

Does anyone have a clue what's going on?

I have suspected for long EU2 uses at times extra ports at times. What those ports are, I don't know, but at times people have weird results (like the ones Artemis tells above, or the odd situation when Player A can see the messages of Player B but not vice versa).

Like Fredde suggested, I'd try DMZ to find out if that solves the issue. In case you need help, could you tell what type your router/firewall is (are)?

See, I told him to ask Jarkko The Router Meister. :D

It did... eventually, because after causing everyone half an hour's worth of problems, I turned my router off, and plugged my PC straight into my DSL modem.

I'll try running through a DMZ and see if that helps... thanks for the advice everyone.

I have suspected that as well - I even tried using netstat to try to see which ports it is, but I couldn't find any consensus of ports being used.

They seemed very random to me

Yep, you tried it with me and Aldo too one time. We got nowhere there :(

@Hive: kurtbrian is the real maister, all I know about routers is how to read a web-manual for a given router, and then quote it to the forum. Not very hard in fact, and an easy way to make you appear as if you knew something ;) Of course, after you've read a dozen or two manuals for routers there are some key-words you tend to find from a new manual in a few seconds :p

A few people have had this same problem with the diplo options not working with Netgear routers, so if you figure out a solution do please post what you did.

Oh, hmm. That's interesting.
You don't happen to know what they did to work around it do you? (Aside from disconnecting the router and connecting 'direct')

As far as I know they (being Storey) didn't manage to come up with a solution.

Well, I tried the DMZ option and tested it again tonight.
Guess what, no change. I can move armies, send merchants, colonists, and the like, but I can't initiate or respond to a diplomatic event - all my diplomatic traffic from my PC to the host appears to go into a 'black hole'.
I got no bleeding idea how to fix this now, but I guess it's good to know that someone else with my make router has the same problem. Means I'm not doing something stupid with the configuration.

I might try following this up with the router manufacturer - not sure how much help I'll get but it's worth a shot. Meantime, I'll work around it by plugging my PC direct into my modem.

Thanks for the help all!

without knowing a lot about redirecting ports.

Coudlnø't it cause the game to crash or run very laggy if the game relies on using several ports at once and then being confined to only one?

someone ban this spammer...

BTW remember there are 2 kinds of ports. The port you connect to and the port you are assigned by the host. The port you assigned is usually random and is used to allow the host to disinguish between the many client proccesses.
