edit: The ghost has appeared on the barracks level, haunting his father, Madbadger, in the middle of a sparring session. That can't be good for his happiness, now can it? Luckily he's still 'content', at 82 happiness. Our fortress improvement projects are really paying off here.

As long as I have things to fight, I'm good. Props to the game for good characterization

Oh, I have a daughter.

Wait, I have a daughter?! Young lady, you get in here right this instant before we deal with the bad strangers, you hear me? And wipe your shoes off before you come inside; we don't need you tracking goblin blood all over the engraved floors. I just carved out a lovely picture of cheese right there.

Things to fight? No shortage of that at all. The unit list still lists 83 invaders - down from somewhere above 100, but still a pretty high number.

Oh, I have a daughter.

Yep.

Actually, you have two children:

At the moment you're kinda busy though - one troll survived a fall off the upper dodge' em trap before the big charge happened and you were one of three soldiers that decided to go and kill it.
But I also ordered the door leading into that room closed at the same time, to prevent it from getting out.
Madchemist made it inside but both you and Adamus saw the door close right in front of your nose, and you're now busy banging on and yelling for someone to open that door hoping they will get around to pulling the lever before madchemist gets his brains bashed in.

brvr3hs.jpg

Little do you know that that troll is already very dead, and madchemist is just sort of relaxing in there waiting for the door to open ;-)

A few other things to report before I unpause again:

Combat log for our fishery worker:
uQWyUHJ.jpg

As you can see, the only reason he has that bruise is because he jumped off the hillside and fell on his head in the process. The troll never actually hit him.

The same thing happened to Stamasd, though he jumped into a Giant Olm, rather than onto a lower level:

7YZ428N.jpg

Good thing these guys wear helmets, eh?

Also: Our marksdwarves are not doing poorly, either:

YHHTG3x.jpg

Ouch. That has to look absolutely horrible, goblin running around with a bolt lodged in his tongue, sticking out through his cheek.

( As an aside, I just found out that hitting F12 partially fixes the 'missing letters' problem I've been having. At least, it fixed the game itself - Stonesense still has that problem. )

Game unpaused a bit, then repaused again.

The first thing I noticed was an announcement:
Code:
[color=red][b]Oddom Mebzuthlogem, Craftsdwarf cancels Dump Item: Interrupted by Elk Bird.[/b][/color]

EZRqAG9.jpg

Right. So that's where that craftsdwarf went. Right in the middle of this screenshot.
He's far away from the action though. So he *should* be fine as long as nothing stupid (and dwarfish) happens.

edit: Slyecho and Avuz both left their martial trances. That was bound to happen of course, and it's no big deal - they're both still AxeLords ..
As an aside - our stocks overview tells me we have a total of 9 AxeLords. It doesn't list master miners but added to that we should have a good 14-15 really high level dwarves running around. If not for that I would not have even considered doing this.
So far so good, though.

Another unpause. And another announcement:

Code:
[b][color=green]Meng Urvadazzin, Axe Lord has entered a martial trance![/color][/b]

Ok. Well, he's right in the thick of it so it's not that strange. Martial trances happen when dwarves fight multiple enemies at once, and that part of the battlefield is pretty crowded.

Nearby, Sneaky Pete is having some trouble with a cave bear:

jscdpH4.jpg

He has spend most of the fight stunned for some reason - there are a lot of creatures attacking him and Meng, so perhaps it's not *that* strange. They're definitely still hanging in there, though.

A bit further towards the main entrance Hyme bashes the brain of a Giant Elk Bird, scoring his first kill of the battle. This must be the creature that caused that 'interrupted by elk bird' announcement, so I'm guessing that removes any threat that posed to Oddom :)

Another unpause, another announcement:

Code:
[b][color=white]Stamasd Dalzatmörul Rimadustos Thusest has become an Axe Lord![/color][/b]

While most of these announcements happen when people go on and off training, I believe this one is the genuine article. The stocks overview now lists 10 Axe Lords. Congrats. :)

Fighting goes on. Most of it is merely a testament to dwarvish awesomeness. The amount of goblin and monster blood on the hillside is staggering.
Culise and Adamus have decided to stop hammering on that door and moved away. Not sure where they're headed, but by the time they arrive this might all be over. We're down to 67 invaders now.

Meanwhile, Culises' daughter is still running from that troll. They're down to ground level now, and there's only one space between her and that monster.

edit: Another unpause. More carnage. The troll stopped chasing our dwarven kid - not sure where he's heading off to, but the distance between them has grown to 8-9 tiles where it was just 1 tile moments ago.
Meng has left his martial trance. Not that he needed it. The unit list is down to 55 invaders and it looks like some of the goblins are attempting to move away. Not that our dwarves are letting them ..

edit2: Unpaused again. Oddom spams another interruption announcement. This time it's a Giant Cave Swallow. He's getting closer to the upper dodge' em entrance though.

A bit of looking around wondering where that troll is off to shows up something interesting:

d0rRWpP.jpg

Why is there a goblin on that hilltop, stunned and bleeding, with no dwarves anywhere in sight?
That bolt is a bit of a clue:

9FfFAyo.jpg

Right. So Kaetje, who hadn't gotten any entries in the combat reports yet, shot that bat causing it to fall out of the sky, taking that goblin with it.
Impressive, especially considering her location: Right outside the main DET entrance, some 5 z-levels down and about 15-20 tiles to the north of that goblin's location. That's some mighty fine shooting there.
edit: That pikeman broke a lot of bones in that fall. Both of them are unconscious and will probably stay that way for a while. :)

Battlefield status:

After a few more ticks of fairly intense fighting, I think we can safely say it's a rout for the goblins. Though we still have a few pockets of resistance left, the main threat has been all but eliminated.

Just to give you an idea of the amount of carnage this involved, here's a series of shots of the 5 z-levels deep main combat area.

Z-level 155:

pu4Z0Zi.png

That goblin to the left is the last ground-based pikeman, standing right next to TheLoneGunman who is undoubtedly about to deliver a can of whoop-ass to him.
The rest of the battlefield below that looks unilaterally bloody:

Z-level 152:

I've expanded the last bit of that screenshot a bit to make sure I got the corpse pile to the northwest of the main battlefield.
Though to be honest, we've got random bits of blood and gore spattered all over the place.

The troll is still moving south, crossing the top of the hill that that goblin pikeman crash landed on:

Vnn2eqM.png

Note that only the giant bat is still there, though unconscious. The pikeman bled out. He didn't survive the fall.
We still have four goblin pikemen left on the map. One on the ground, three in the air. We'll have to let the marksdwarves deal with those.

The only true threat remaining is to the northwest, and completely untouched:

wNAZ4jV.png

That's a force of goblin spearmen, led by a MaceLord. If you may recall, we've engaged two full squads in the main battlefield, led by a Master Lasher and an Elite Spearman. Those are the equivalents of our Axe Lords, and the only units that will pose a true threat to our main forces.

I'm going to try and regroup before we engage these. But it may be hard, dwarves in a battle frenzy don't really listen very well to orders.

The giant bat woke up, took flight, lost consciousness mid-flight and slammed into the ground again.
Ouch.

A wild kea, flying above the battlefield, is drawing crossbow fire. So are the goblins that are flying up there.

edit:
Hyme and one of our unclaimed PickLords caught up to the Troll. Needless to say, this won't end well. For the troll. :)
.. and he died to an axe to the head. Natural causes, I'd say. :)

edit2: The MaceLord and his cronies are retreating. Good riddance!
edit3: Mako, the unconscious bat got put out of his misery. The only hostiles left on the map are flyers, and our archers are putting up a barrage of bolts trying to kill them.

Does that mean I solo-killed the troll, or that it was already dead when I entered the room? One of those is way cooler than the other.

It means this:

Q8lNEDP.png

.. yeah. You mined his head off in the end there. :)
Though the title is wrong - it should be "PickLord" by now, because you attained Legendary miner status some time ago.

In other news, the last goblin pikeman refuses to die, flying around just outside of crossbow range.
As a result, the floor around the fortress is becoming littered with bolts. Literally:

gEMuw6q.png

You can see exactly where our dwarves' crossbow range ends - it's the nice square of "/" markers showing you where all the bolts are landing.

Also, I've started post-siege operations: All of the melee has been taken off duty, the alert has been lifted, and I've designated some temporary refuge stockpiles just outside the magma incineration room exit - part of which is also visible in the screenshot, as the square black mattice area to the west. That will save a bit of walking for our dwarves, especially since I intend to incinerate all of the goblin leftovers soon anyway.

Secondly, I've decided to wall off the rest of the map. This will be a three part project:
  1. A massive wall to the northeast, just like the current curtain wall;
  2. A smaller wall to the west, linking the western part of the curtain wall to the mountainside;
  3. A set of digging designations designed to cut *through* the mountains in the south.

The last part is about creating an artificial gap between map edge and the inside of the map that enemy ground units cannot easily cross - basically a poor man's wall.
Something which should both be cheaper and finish a zillion times faster than an actual wall would.

The last giant bat left the map. The siege has officially been lifted. We didn't kill the last pikeman, though - he flew away.
Still, good riddance. Not to mention a collossal victory. :)

This battle is sure to inspire a ton of engravings.

Perhaps something like this:

Time for the DF theme song. :)

Is there any chance for getting better range for proper anti-air fire? Like, say, using siege weapons...

Is there any chance for getting better range for proper anti-air fire? Like, say, using siege weapons...

I'd say the range is pretty good, actually. Remember that Kaetje shot that bat down from pretty far away already.
Siege weapons aren't going to improve matters - for starters, both catapults and ballistae only work against units on the same z-level as the weapon itself.
Meaning that there is absolutely no point trying to use them against flying targets, unfortunately.

The fight hasn't even properly ended or thieves are already attempting to rob us. A bunch of wild kea has seen fit to visit us, and one of them is trying to make off with an adamantine battle axe!
<expletive deleted>

I've ordered every available marksdwarf to kill these filthy buggers. Especially the one with that axe in it's claws.
edit: Bloody hell. It flew away. Argh. That piece of weaponry was completely irreplaceable, and worth a good 20.000 dwarfbucks. Sheesh.

edit2: One of our unclaimed marksdwarves is being reported as "has been missing for a week".
Did we actually lose someone in that fight?

edit3: A second dwarf, a Recruit, has been reported missing. No sign of either of these guys in the combat logs. Weird ..
The only explanation I can think of that one of the bridges smashed them to bits when it closed. Because otherwise .. I have no idea what happened.
The last of the Kea has been shot from the sky. Good riddance.

Ah, damn. "The last giant bat left map" left me a bit disappointed and I thought if better range would have helped in cleansing the filth.

Jeez. KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!

Damn. How come it managed to even get one? Did it pick it up from some military dwarf or how could it reach it?

When military dwarves go off-duty they have this nasty tendency to simply drop pieces of their equipment where they stand. Even if that's somewhere outside, and even if it's one of the most expensive pieces of equipment in the entire fort.
And since kea can fly .. all it needed to do was land.

The way to prevent this is to move all of the squads *inside* first, and *then* take them off-duty. This time around, I forgot .. ah well.

Typical kea. Our most dangerous native animal. They'll steal your passport if you don't watch it, from inside your locked car.

What is the effect of incinerating the goblin remains? Wouldn't it be better to use them for something useful?

I think the intent is to prevent a necromancer from appearing and raising all of the various bits into a zombie army.
