What is the effect of incinerating the goblin remains? Wouldn't it be better to use them for something useful?

The only useful bits of goblin are the bones, which we're using for crafting training bolts.
But we have far more bones available than we need for training bolts.. a single indoor stockpile is enough.

I think the intent is to prevent a necromancer from appearing and raising all of the various bits into a zombie army.

Exactly. And with that necromancer's tower right next door ..

On top of that, having tons and tons of items for the game to keep track off means dragging our FPS down, slowing down the game.

When military dwarves go off-duty they have this nasty tendency to simply drop pieces of their equipment where they stand. Even if that's somewhere outside, and even if it's one of the most expensive pieces of equipment in the entire fort.
And since kea can fly .. all it needed to do was land.

The way to prevent this is to move all of the squads *inside* first, and *then* take them off-duty. This time around, I forgot .. ah well.

Ah, right. *makes a note of it*

Typical kea. Our most dangerous native animal. They'll steal your passport if you don't watch it, from inside your locked car.

Sounds almost like national animal for *ahem* certain segment of population. Polandball-worthy perhaps.

I don't suppose there is easy way to purge non-essential info from saves? I've only endured one siege and the game is already lagging badly.

Game unpaused for a while. It is now spring 147.

I have flooded the magma incineration room and the bottom of the second dodge' em trap with magma. A lot of our garbage went up in smoke. Good riddance.
I will hold off on opening the outer floodgates until our dwarves stop having good reasons (aside from hunting and the like) to go outside - meaning it won't happen until we wall things off a bit better.
edit: Some of our bolts landed in the tops of trees, where our dwarves can't reach them. Naturally, I ordered those cut down.

One of our non-legendary miner dwarves has been taken by a Strange Mood. Unfortunately, it's a possession, so she won't get XP from it.
Too bad, more legendary miners is never a bad thing to have.
She likes gems, maces and anvils. And lots of others things you can't actually make with mining.

The wiki tells us a miner will create one of these things: Door, bed, chair, table, statue, quern, millstone, coffer, armor stand, weapon rack, cabinet, coffin, floodgate, hatch cover, grate.
Most of these things are really nice as artifacts, so I'm happy with it.

Ok. I'm leaving for my vacation soon, and as of this point I won't be able to update until I get back.

If nobody feels like picking up the game in the interim, at least consider opening the latest save (here) and posting whatever observations you can make. There's a lot of stuff in there that I haven't even talked about. ;-)

A few notes, though, in case anyone else *does* pick up the game.

- Garbage collection zones
There are a few 1-tile garbage collection zones (designated via the 'i' menu command) that I use to collect outdoor stuff in using the 'dump' command. Two directly behind the main DET and the trade depot, one directly after the upper DET, and one near the main staircase near the upper DET. And probably a few others that I forgot about. Dwarves will bring items designated for dumping there, at which point those items will become forbidden to use. You have to periodically unforbid that to make sure our dwarves can actually use it.
And to make matters more fun, dwarves tend to ignore z-levels when they try and figure out which garbage collection zone is closest. Meaning that they might go to a garbage dump 50 z-levels underground, bypassing all of the dumps they might encounter on the way there.

- Ghosts
Two of our dwarves have gone 'missing for a week'. We might have to engrave memorial slabs for them (at a craftsdwarfs' workshop) and install those (at the graveyard level) before they come back to haunt the place.
That's something I will have to do myself if nobody else picks it up. ;-)

Enjoy the vacation - and pay attention to little dwarf happiness. *wink*

Did I kill anybody during that battle? I saw myself out there in every second screenshot, surely I've mined plenty of Goblins to death?

Not exactly.

You see: You were part of the first wave out the door, and immediately took a sharp left to attack the closest enemy - one of the trolls.
You attacked it twice, started mining it's gut out, and then .. one of your friends lobbed it's head off.

Meanwhile, the bulk of the dwarf army was still pouring out of the door, and most of them charged straight at the oncoming wave of goblins, because we kinda ran out of trolls.
And since you had basically gone the other way at the start, it took you a while to catch up - at which point the fight was basically over.
You have 3 goblin kills to your name. Not much changed from before that battle.

So I'm sorry. I did keep an eye on you, but you simply got screwed over by your own eagerness. ;-)

Who stole my kill? Why didn't I go into a tantrum over this?

Not sure, to be honest. Probably one of the dwarves near you in that fight. Hyme, perhaps?
I'll go over the military for a bit, see who killed off the trolls.

edit: I've looked at it for a bit; The only two people who really qualify are Hyme and Slyecho. Hyme killed the troll that chased that kid around though, so that disqualifies him; Leaving only slyecho.
The kill lists are interesting. Ignoring hunters, Tuominen tops the list with ease, with a grand total of 24 kills of various goblins and humanoid opponents; Noco has 13, Tonkatoy and Mosus have 9 each, and after that there is a really long tail of people who have only a handful of kills.

If we count 'animal life' kills, however, there is a guy named Mesttosh Uzolneb, who has a total of 34 kills, 32 of which sound like local 'wildlife' in the The Square Murk - presumably, some of the open terrain outside our fort.
Interesting wildlife, too. Apparently there's such a thing as 'wren men', 'tick men', and 'musquito men'. God knows what those are. I definitely don't remember seeing any of those. And why is he an Axeman, instead of a hunter? This gets odder and odder.
He is a 'skilled' maceman though, so presumably those kills were made *before* he came to our fort.

Hey, hey, randa...kar, how many kids did you kill today?

None.
Though that thunderstorm that drifted in while we were out rowing might have made a good attempt at it hadn't we gotten inside in time. :)

Game unpaused for a while.

A bit of a problem is brewing; The miner working on that artifact is missing one of the items he needs to complete the work. He likes sardonix and calcite and appears to be missing at least one type of cut get and some leather, so I've ordered some domestic animals slaughtered for their skins and some gems to be cut. Hopefully that will solve the issue.

I've ordered a slab engraved for Rakust Kabuzal, one of the missing dwarves. The other one is nowhere to be found on the unit list, nor do I have a new corpse in either the coffins or the inventory list. So it's a bit of an enigma.

In the meantime, a five year old dwarven child named Iton Zanegrigòth has taken on a fey aspect; Another Strange Mood. This is the son of TheLoneGunman and Brovahkiin; We'll see what type of workshop he'll claim shortly.
Wait What? When did I procreate?

GUNMAN !!!!!!!!!!

Slyecho! My arch-nemesis strikes again! I shall not forget this slight. My revenge will be terribly... dwarfish.

Uhm. I know you have a really poor memory, but how could you forget that you gave birth? You're female, I'm pretty sure you'd have noticed that sort of thing.
Now five years ago is obviously a lot of time but .. you have 8 of them, for crying out loud! :D

More seriously: We've had a lot of kids. I will only report on them when they become relevant, or when someone kindly asks about it. kk?

GUNMAN !!!!!!!!!!

Decapitating goblins is hard work, it's only fair I be rewarded with alcohol and baby making.

It seems the dwarves haven't received proper attention for a while. No transition to new version possible, I suppose - so will you keep going with the old one?

That's the plan.
I haven't really felt terribly interested in running the fort of late though. I may pick it up again soon, but no guarantees.
