I think I am going to start off with the Shizumu clan. I always liked them, I also started with these when I played shogun TW...

Went with Shimuzu for the first runthrough. Shogun by 1556, went well :)

I changed my mind at the last minute and went with Mori. Turns out only vassals of the clan leader can break away, not vassals of vassal daimyo. Surely vassals of vassals should have the ability to use plot to break away without having to wait for either their liege to form his own clan or for the liege to become the clan leader.
Went back to my original plan and started with Honma instead. Uesugi got plot raped hard.

I started off playing some small family (Honjo) owning only one region. Figured this was the best way to learn the game without the stress of micro-managing your armies as well or having a huge family or vassels. It went pretty well. My first leader got a few kids and married them away and that way to close to both my liege and the leader of the clan (Daughter married to the leader now) and by some magic I can not figure out some kid (8 years old) of the Honjo family became the daimyo of the area and appointed my leader as his hier.

Clearly when he became a adult he would have had a kid and appointed them so as a good Japanese and send in some ninjas to take care of the kid and became Daimyo, then I saved to play an other day. Love the game so far :D...then again feels wrong that I like the game after having murder a 8 year old kid for some power and money :p

So conclusion. Do not shy away from playing a small and minor family, it has it own charm to fight your way to the top and see how far you can get. I have speed most of the time at full speed though.

Playing the first serious game as Kikouchi, a pretty good starting Clan, not too small compared to neighbours and not too many provinces from the start

I know the history of the Shimazu and Date clans (very fascinating stuff - the Shimazu were semi-independent for a lot of the Tokugawa Shogunate), so I'll play as them, as I do in Shogun: Total War.

It doesn't look like Toyotomi Hideyoshi is playable given the start date, right?

Started out as Date, trying to conquer the Tohoku region, and succeeded, but I had to quit that game somewhere around 1500 due to extremely long loading times. Just started a new game as Toki, and so far it's great fun: medium-sized clan with an interesting starting position, and surrounded by enemies. I also like the history of the Toki clan.
