I know that in shogun 2 once you become too powerful a "realm divide" event will occur where all of the clans unite to try and stop you. Will there be something like this in Sengoku?
 
i hope not, since with over 300 provinces you're bound to need allies and to use diplomacy, and knowing some of the aspects of the gameplay, i'm about 90% positive there isn't, but i guess you can think of the period where you are Shogun as a "realm divide" since everyone will be trying to get a piece of you to stop you from winning
 
To become shogun and win the game you need to conquer x% of the provinces, claim the title and then hold it for a number of months. Once you claim the title everyone else will see you as a bigger threat, which should increase the opposition against you.
 
I think the OP is referring to the fact that in TW:S2, the "realm divide event" is a bit absolute.
Your most loyal allies quickly turn against you (even against their best interest), your vassals revolt, nobody wants to trade with you... etc Effectively, no more diplomacy is possible, you just need to militarily crush everyone

What a ham-fisted bit of game design.

TW: Rome had similar; your two life-long allies turned against you after a certain point. It's a neat final clash of the titans (like a boss of sorts :D), but I think it wouldn't really work the same way in Paradox games, as the focus of TW is in the battles (and it's less serious and more like an arcade game anyways).
 
I think the idea of the realm divide is good and other sengoku-period games have something similar(notably Nobunaga's Ambition), but its implementation in Shogun 2 was a bit ham-fisted. Someone taking the lead should get ganged up on, but it should be a polarizing thing, with a few allies going to the leader and most of the rest forming a coalition against, rather than a deterioration of relations with everyone, including your vassals.

On the other hand, there should be allies for the leading faction as well. Historically, the Tokugawa clan did have quite a number of allies because they offered them the lands of the clans that were defeated. Generally speaking the AI should try to figure the best way to try to allow the AI clans to survive. There should be two main issues which are the size of other clans and their relations towards you. Smaller clans should generally be more friendly towards the leading clan and if their relations with you are good then it should be less likely that they would start a war against you. So, if you control the needed number of provinces to become shogun then there should be a theoretical possibility to win the game diplomatically.

I believe it will work more or less like that, also taking into consideration personal characters' traits, friendships and preferences.

TW: Shogun 2's realm divide is just their 'simplistic' way to simulate opposition to your faction taking the Shogunate. I'm looking forward to see how paradox does this.

Opposition to your rule should be a function of your honor, treatment of other factions, treaties, etc.
 
I agree. Being Shogun means that you have "control" and you should be very powerful if you managed to reach that stage, holding half of japan, so i think others should follow their interests, if they can rally an opposition, then please, by all means, do so, but if not, i think they should follow their interests and avoid conflict if possible even if it means to submit or bide their time and resort to treachery and the new plot mechanisim.

i mean, the game will be using crusader king 2's engine right? so i think there should be more reason to AI wanting to attack you at this point other than to have the game just try to make it harder for you to win.

Why bother making alliances and giving vassals that you have good relations with some important posts of power if they'll get rebellious and flip for no apparent reason at this stage of the game.
