CK2 Dev Diary #105 - Clergy Interactions Revamp

Hello, everyone.

Today we will be talking of a nice quality of life update to the interface, AI behavior and some new additional flavor regarding the Papacy (as well as any similar religious head that has access to these interactions, such as a Reformed Pagan High Priest with Hierocratic Leadership).

The patch coming with Holy Fury will place all Papal Actions in a more easily accessible list of icons, right under the portrait of your religious head in the Religion screen.

Furthermore, the behavior for all these actions has been un-hardcoded and fully scripted, so the Pope is now much more sensible when deciding who he wants to Excommunicate, and less restrictive when considering the possibility of granting an Invasion casus belli to an ambitious ruler. More importantly, players are now able to see exactly why their religious head is denying them a request.

The AI logic itself has been considerably expanded and tailored to the various actions.

Having a vassal Pope no longer ensures that all your demands will be automatically accepted, and having an independent Pope will not make it near-impossible to get a favor from him. The Pope will take into consideration Opinion, Piety, traits, the specific circumstances (such as divorcing an infertile wife), and the amount of controlled Cardinal seats when deciding whether to accept a ruler’s request or not. Piety costs for these interactions have also been rebalanced and tied to the ruler’s tier, making them more accessible to low ranking rulers and costlier to Kings and Emperors.

The Request Claim interaction has been given a special new interface as well to make it more intuitive and accessible to players. Rather than having to search directly for the title that you wish to gain a claim on, you can use the new button in the religious view to get a list of potential Catholic rulers owning titles for which the Pope is willing to grant you a claim on. By clicking on any of them, you will be shown a second window showing the list of all titles owned by the target ruler and from there you can select the one that you are interested in.

Finally, if you are Excommunicated, the Issue Declaration of Repentance decision has been revamped so that it is no longer simply a cash payment.

Much like when requesting a coronation, the Pope will now pick one out of several possible demands for the player to fulfill in exchange for the lifting of his excommunication. Requests can range from a show of contrition causing Prestige loss, to changing your realm laws, to give one of your sons to the Church.

Also, bonus Cardinal clothes, pre and post 1245:

Well, the converter basically create a mod. The few times I used it, I slightly modded it further to "correct" thing here and there. A lot of what you want may be doable. Just, you'll have to do it manually.

I guess what I am gonna do is manually give all the Reformed Leaders Feudal Theocracy government. Then I am gonna create a separate side-mod which changes Leader Titles based on government type and religion. I've already created a mini-mod that allows German culture to form Germany (Shouldn't that already be included) since converter does not have specific Germanic cultures besides Westphalian (CK2-Saxon) and Pomeranian. Thanks

The reason the Pope became so powerful is because he filled a power vacuum after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire when secular authority was very weak.
He didn't. The pope was chosen by the ERE for 300 years after it fell. Remember that Rome was retaken during this point. What happened was the Franks and Charlemagne who were a power much closer to Rome came to be.

Good DD. An additional suggestion to this mechanic would be to make the Pope's opinion modifiers either delay or hasten your request. Currently in the screenshot it says +2 with a "Yes" granted [request]. But if it was only +2, shouldn't it be followed with like 1-4 months of waiting (RNG) where eventually the Pope will send you a message: "After much thinking and deep reflection, I have decided to grant you your request."? It shouldn't be instant if it's just a few numbers above. Which means if something happens during this this period of waiting for a reply, e.g the requested excommunicated target becomes a better man [assuming excommunication is the request], the Pope may change his mind.

Yes, they have added +2 duchies and +3 counties, for a total of:
3 duchies in the Kingdom of Brittany, and 9 counties. (4 in one, 3 in one and two in one.)

I'll admit being slightly pissed at not knowing that. I never realized how much they showed on the streams. So that's Brittany and Britain getting more counties and that's not shown on the diaries. I hope they make a compilation pre-release of all the map changes.

I think they want some content to be unannounced, so as to give players some exciting surprises when they finally get to play the expansion. They only showed this content because they were asked to, and felt in a good mood.

They didn't showcase this in the stream. I spotted this in a tiiiny corner of a screenshot.

blasphemous behavior (open witch/satanist/heathen).

"I still can't believe I married her. She nagged me all the time, and her parents were the worst."

"Sounds like your ex-wife was a real witch."

"Yeah. Luckily, the Pope annulled our marriage on that basis."

Another useful upd!

2.8.3.4 is in beta; but the map changes won't be available until the update accompanying Holy Fury (2.9?) drops next month.

There hasn't been a public map update since Jade Dragon came out, remodelling the Middle East and adding Tibet; every update mentioned in recent decades diaries, going back some months now, will appear alongside Holy Fury.

Oh i finally got it! Thanks a lot! As EU player it is something new for me :Р Im almost week thought that I need buy DLCs for provinces :D

This DLC is awesome. I like that you fixed the vassal pope, making vassalizing him less overpowered. Also, moddable excommunication scripts are great. Will other diplomatic interactions be unhardcoded as well?
I didn't even know that the "Ask for Claim"-interaction existed, until I read about it on the wiki a few months ago. I was hyped a little bit. But then I realized that it is very tedious to look if the Pope would accept and that he almost always doesn't (which makes sense, of course). So I think it's definitely a good idea to make it "more intuitive and accessible".

And since you are literally reworking and polishing every aspect of the game with Holy Fury, how about making theocracies playable in vanilla? Just asking...
