CK2 Dev Diary#24: The 2.6.2 patch

Hello and welcome back to another CK2 Development Diary. The 2.6.2 update looms rather near now, and if everything goes to plan it should be released on Thursday (hopefully we will have an open beta on Friday). I’ll start out with the bad news; due to some unforeseen problems one of the game rules I mentioned last week will not be included with this patch: The Multiplayer Assassination rule. However, we do have two other game rules for you which you may find interesting:

  1. De jure Requirement: Default/Required. On default, nothing changes, but with “Required” characters who hold titles which have de jure land will eventually lose the title if they don’t hold any of the de jure land.
  2. Horse Lords:Nomad Stability: Unstable/Stable. Now when a Khagan dies, his vassals have the possibility to break away and form their own realms -with the new Khagan getting a CB on them. Setting “Stable” keeps the old behaviour.

There was some outcry last week because Jews and Zoroastrians didn’t also get a crusader style trait, so I’ve managed to sneak both in with the Shaddai and Gond-i Shahanshah traits. While we were in a trait-adding mood, both Cannibal and Lover’s Pox were changed from character modifiers to traits (although we have left the old modifier checks in place so ongoing games aren’t broken).

The Gender Equality gamerule and laws revealed a few problems with Muslim events always assuming Muslim rulers would be male, so we’re spend a bit of time adding the appropriate checks which should result in a more flavourful Muslim experience.

As well as this, there are plenty of small fixes and additions to many other things, but I’ll let you explore the game and/or the patchnotes to discover them for yourselves.

Now that its possible to have ages way below 0, hopefully they should be able to fix Tiberius and Augustus age in the Byzantine Empire title history tab.
Wait, it's possible to have negative dates for the game now?
My dreams of a Greco-Persian wars mod is POSSIBLE!?

For many versions it has been possible. If a character is created by event rather than by the history files, said character could have a negative date of birth. I wrote one that added Augustus via event making him the approximate correct age. (The age does seem to drift a little here and there when negative, however.)

I'm sure there was settlements and kingdoms that dedicated themselves to one god whilst still worshipping the others. Kinda like how Athens is the city protected by Athena, the people didn't stop worshipping the other gods because of it. I imagine some tribal petty kings had similar believes in the pagan world.

If nothing else it helps adding something to an otherwise bland religion group to make it a little bit more interesting.
Not so sure, Athens was the city of Athena because it had a major temple to her. So it would make more sense to link holy sites to gods than characters.
As for regional worship well norway and western sweden worshipped the Vanir as the main phanteon, while denmark and eastern sweden worshipped the aesir as the main phanteon.

Gentlemen (and ladies), the argument over the plural of platypus has raged on this forum for time immemorial. But are we not all Paradoxians here? Should we not rather unite in peace and harmony instead of bickering over such things? Therefore I propose we throw out all the competing old proposals, and adopt a new standard, one we can all agree on. Instead of relying on dead languages (for which, I assure you, I retain the utmost respect), let us take a page from English's own gloriously convoluted book. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you:

One playtpus, many platypeese!

;)
From geese?
No I refuse I still think the plural form of Platypus is Bob.

What I mean is... is it possible to make a negative start-date now?

Interesting. Wasn't aware of that.

Cheers for the DD Darkrenown :). Yet again, you have failed to provide a smaller, less substantial DD despite your promise last week (patchnotes are pretty extensive imo, with some good stuff in there) :p. I like these two things in particular (ie, rule changes, and revenge of the killer platypuses) :).

De jure Requirement: Default/Required. On default, nothing changes, but with “Required” characters who hold titles which have de jure land will eventually lose the title if they don’t hold any of the de jure land.

The whole DD schedule is changing. Stellaris will be on Thursday AFAIK.

The old routine of Stellaris - CK 2 - break - EU 4 - HoI4 is etched in my brain, next Monday I'll be all confused (and who knows what we'll see next Tuesday?! :)). Have to say, that PDS can maintain consistently interesting DDs for four games continuously is hella impressive .

Wait what?
- The Ruler Designer no longer shows beards as available for women
Deeply disappointed this was not fixed by actually ALLOWING women to have beards.

- Zoroastrians and Messalians can now seduce their close family members.
- Zoroastrians and Messalians no longer get two separate decisions to send their Son-Husbands and Daughter-Wives into hiding.
Every patch notes post always includes what I like to define as "Only in a Paradox game is this required" line or two. These are the winners for this patch.

But... I read Stellaris forum on Mondays...

Please explain why you feel its necessary to remove the Roman culture from random generation. That was a truly fantastic easteregg that people on reddit certainly enjoyed. Discovering a mystical roman doctor was frankly incredibly fun and lucky. Instead of removing it, why don't you just complete it and give them a retinue?

This. It's not a bug, that's a feature!

Interesting. Wasn't aware of that.
I was going to provide the source but I can't seem to find it now, it was on wikipedia somewhere though, complete with a map, I think I got to the article from the one about the aesir -vanir war. Ah well.

Because they'd have to be centuries old even in 769. Like I said I accept it in immortal characters but a wandering doctor who happens to be of a culture that died several centuries before is just stupid, Especially since he's probably in his 40s.

Not this again we had it with hellenistic, if they didn't intend it to be a feature then it's a bug.

It doesn't really matter if it was intended to be a "feature" or not, its how the playerbase is treating it--and as of now, its in the game. People enjoy it, and it only adds, not detracts. Resurrecting real Roman culture is what at the very least some roleplayers want to do. Its why there are so many mods adding a simple retinue to it and fleshing out the Roman Empire as a whole.

Lets not forget that the language of the Church was actual Latin. Especially as it would be around 200 years old since the culture began shifting.

So don't tell us its "stupid" when its far more plausible than invading Aztecs, or India invading Europe, or any other thing that can happen in this game.

Actually no it's not since it would require someone hundreds of years dead to show up at your doorstep. Theoretically a american people (though granted not the aztecs) could have learned to build ships from the vikings, or india could have been united under a powerful leader who pushed west. But people don't come back from the dead. There's more to being roman than speaking latin. I speak latin yet I wouldn't for a second be able to pass as a roman in ancient rome.
Sure you could have some sort of latin revival, but they'd be a new culture referring to themselves as roman, not actually roman. It would also be on a province basis not just some random dude who shows up more than 200 years out of context.

I've already admitted that I am fine with immortal romans. Because that makes sense within the context of the setting as defined (ie there being immortals).

Granted, that could be an interesting supernatural event where you find an immortal roman.

But then the culture should be fleshed out to be better playable, not removed, so that you could actually take advantage of the event. Yes, there is more to the culture than just speaking latin, obviously there are characteristics like race and so forth. Which is why there was no single time roman culture was "dead". There was no bookmark in history where roman peoples just fell over and vanished, obviously through time the culture morphed with the invading German tribes-Italian.

The point still stands that as this morph took place, theres a historical basis for it, with real latin lingering in various places and obviously lasting with the Chuch for millennia. There is no historical basis for aztecs or american invasions, or indian invasions, or chinese invasions should they be added. Im not saying Im against adding these things, I actually enjoy an aztec invasion from time to time because it adds to and changes up gameplay and 100% historical accuracy should not be the goal. If that were the goal, there would be no reason to have gender laws or pagan reformations. Yet those small things add to the game and allow roleplayers to have their fun, while not diminishing the enjoyment of historically driven gamers who do not need to use those aspects of the game if they don't want.

Which is default setting? Unstable or Stable?
If stable isn't default setting, would it disable achievements?

Eh no ethnicity have nothing to do with culture. I am talking about cutoms, culinary culture, common ideals, common symbols, frames of reference and oh so many other things, at this point all that has been scattered by the barbarian invasions of italy, oh yes most of it remians, a litlte in one place some other piece in another, but seeking these cultural fragements out and pieceing them together to something akin to real roman culture would be impossible.

If you are talking ethnicity then roman is already in the game it's called italian. Actually doubly so it's also in there as vlach. But culturally these have diverged and you can't turn back time. And even if you could, to what? Roman culture was never fixed, it changed over time. In fact it probably was diffrent in diffrent parts of the empire all along, only rome would have been truly roman.

That's impossible, while gender laws sunset invasion and pagan reformations are just unlikely.
