CK2 Dev Diary#28: Easing Executions

It’s Monday again, and you know what that means: a Dev Diary! It’s time to start talking about new features in an upcoming DLC which I can’t name yet. For DDs we prefer to talk about things we’ve already implemented, but this <Mystery DLC> is still in the very early stages so you’re going to see some mockups which hopefully convey the idea of what we are going for without being an exact representation - don’t be surprised if the final result looks rather different though.

With that said, the basic idea is to give the Intrigue screen more room for Decisions and Prisoners. As well as that, a system of filters and a set of “do to all currently shown” buttons to Release/Ransom/Execute multiple characters at once:

Ideally we’ll also have a lock button on characters so they can be excluded from mass actions, and radio buttons would likely be better than our traditional dropdown lists.

That’s it for now, I did warn you I would make some short DDs sometimes!

I never understood what makes some plots available and others not (e.g. murder or revoking a title). Bringing some clarity into that system and also adding something the player can do for those plot targets that are below 100% would be a good addition to the game.

If I could, I would agree 500 times.

Can I please ask you to add some symbols (maybe text one) to action buttons to see more info without clicking. I mean info:
- why can't he be ransomed: no money or no interest? For example letters M or I.
- Will there be penalty to execute him?
- Can you revoke his title without penalty?

Also it would be nice to see his religion and culture in the list. Showing heir would also be nice.

After a second thought it looks like those filters are bad idea to me - looks unpleasant and not very useful. I'd prefer more info in "line" and the categories system and filter for it.

Categories are:
- newly aquired prisoners without status
- To ransom. Prisoners will be autoransomed when they have enough money/queue. For example you captured 5 children of King. Now you have to click ransom one, wait for response, return to prison - ransom second, wait for response, return to prison - find out that King has no more money. Wait for a few months/years, check if he got the money and start clicking ransom again. Instead it would be better to check them available to ransom and get money without checking/clicking.
- To die in prison. If there is penalty to execution, but I don't want to release powerful noble (especialy if I'm going to inherit his titles) I'd like to mark him as "forever prisoner" so he won't clutter space with newly captured prisoners.
- To revoke titles/release. I want to revoke one or more title from him, but not right now for some reason. Or release him later.

So once category assigned I can filter prisoners with simple radio buttons and change my decision.

And this option should automatically lob 'em in the Oubliette. *Looks at decadent half-brother with an insidious grin.*

Developers, please think about having isolated characters switch loyalties to neighboring higher ranking characters. For instance, if you have a count or a duke with no land connection and surrounded by stronger characters, then that count will eventually leave you and switch fealty to a duke and the duke to a king and so forth. This would fix the border gore problem the game tends to have after a hundreds years or so. It is also realistic as the character will feel unsafe being so far away from the lord and the other vassals so he will end up looking for safety by switching fealty.

@Darkrenown, @Doomdark

Since it is still early on, can you guys think about taking a pass at any of the following?

-Expanding the modability of title revocation, by allowing a free_revoke code for each tiers and not just duchy tier free revocation or having to code it into a Government type instead?

-Expand the modability of revocation by allowing prices to be added to revocation, so it can cost either opinion (as now), piety, prestige, money, and/or whatever other currencies might make sense. So, for instance, you could mod-in an 'Imperial Territory' law that makes castle-counties free-revocable, but at a large prestige cost, whereas revoking a temple would cost a large piety hit, but because of 'free-revoke', it doesn't harm opinion of anyone other than the target character.

-Expand claim modability by allowing claims to be demanded under a law where you can purchase a claim for prestige, money, piety, or the like, either from a religious head (like you can with the Pope), or a liege, or even another vassal where you buy a claim off him.

-Take spade at improving the flexibility and functionality of vice-royalties to be less micro intensive?

-Further improving the flexibility of retinues? Maybe being able to generate retinues in larger stacks than around 250 at a time?

-Balancing tactics to favour combined arms and removing the current min-maxing , allowing units to act in a rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock fashion? With each retinue type having clear advantages and disadvantages and ratios benefiting different types of builds?

No, that should be an additional decision.

I sometimes keep crazy folks imprisoned for their own good under house arrest.

That's broken from a gameplay standpoint (suddenly your heir I captured in battle isn't of your religion anymore!) and nonsensical from any plausible roleplay standpoint ("Oh sure, I'll totally convert and stay converted once I go back to my liege's court. Trust me").
Well it would be nice if you could covert them and get a piety boost and then the moment they are released they get a event allowing them to covert back at some minor penalty (with pagans being less likely to do so)

If they are vassals to you when you demand their conversion then they would have the ability to convert back if they become independent.

After intrigue gets the attention it's needed for a while, all that'll be left from my perspective will be non-military monastic orders, childhood education restoration, a little more events/features for the actual main event (you know, the Crusades) and playable theocracies. I think then maybe CK2 can ride off into the sunset

Curse you Rajas for deeply weakening the game's performance. And curse you Conclave+patch for your terrible rollout and deeply imperfect features and gutting of perfectly fine gameplay. Otherwise, what a stellar lifespan. I've never played a game so long and I may never again.

Finally, the four wives, three lovers and 68 children of Caliph Randy al-Seducer that I imprisoned after capturing a random castle can be ransomed/executed/released all at once!

Smart enemies you have ;)

Cheers for the DD Darkrenown, and some nice QoL improvements there :D. Am a big fan of 'ransom' or 'release' all (I don't do a lot of executions, but I can definitely see the benefit of that button too). Best of luck with the new expansion, looking forward to whatever you're brewing up :).

DLC related, fiiiinalllly got around to playing CK2 with Reaper's Due (took me longer than I'd hoped, but 'suffering' (totally wrong word) from an overabundance of PDS releases this year :)) and really enjoying it, love the new additions, felt like a really well-designed expansion in that it added to the game and gameplay without making it feel 'heavier' (other than that feeling you get when the black death comes through ), and the later-game performance boost is also most welcome - thanks to you and the team .

There should be a button "Consume all" if you're a cannibal ^^

Did India really even have all that much of an impact in this time period?

Also, what core gameplay was gutted?
