Yesterday should have been a dev diary day, but I forgot that May 1 is actually some sort of Red holiday, and turning up to work gets you lined up against a wall and shot. However, this is not the time to discuss the mysterious idols, totems and faiths of the previous century. Let us instead think back much further, to simpler - if no less bloody - times, before Socialist May Day, before Christian Walpurgis Night, when the bonfires blazed for the Old Gods...

To begin with, religious Moral Authority has been revamped. The base value is now determined by the number of Holy Sites under the control of the religion. On top of this, there are various timed modifiers (think character opinions) for things like winning or losing holy wars, or building temples. This new system applies to all religions, not just the pagans. The pagan religions do tend to start with fewer Holy Sites under their control, but on the other hand there are no pagan heresies to worry about.

Now, as mentioned in previous dev diaries, pagans enjoy a number of advantages, but they also suffer from some frustrating limitations. Foremost, perhaps, is that they are stuck with Gavelkind. Pagan vassals are also a lot more suspicious of new rulers on succession (harsher "short reign" opinions), they cannot demand conversion of vassals, and they are easily impressed by the cunning missionaries of the Abrahamic religions. To avoid these problems, pagans can of course simply give up the old ways and convert, but there is another option; pagan religions can be reformed in imitation of those clever monotheists. With a proper church hierarchy, a holy book, and standardized rituals, the pagan religions can become more competitive.

Reforming the faith is not easy; you need to control three of the holy sites and have a lot of Piety to boot. After reforming, your faith will be given a religious head. In the case of Norse Pagans, the character who conducted the reformation will become the Fylkir, serving as both secular ruler and religious leader in much the same way as an Islamic Caliph. You may now declare holy wars, both great pagan Crusades and regular religious wars against infidels. Other pagan religions get a vassal religious head, like the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.

There are tradeoffs to reforming the faith, however. You will lose the Subjugation casus belli and the defensive home attrition, and the unreformed version of your religion will become a heresy (which can cause problems for you.) As a pagan, you will normally want to grow quickly using your invasion and subjugation CBs, and then try to either reform your religion or convert in order to consolidate and stabilize your realm...

That's all for now. Next week's topic is special pagan events and decisions!

While I like the quote and the sense of general encouragement, suffice to say that I do not find myself comfortable with the political atmosphere at Berkeley. I don't like unorganized and naively idealistic left wing movements.

So, no stereotype to giggle about.
Could we stop with this political nonsense? This is thread about DLC to the game, not a commentary section beneath article about 1st May.

So once again - what about Slavs, Paradox?

Just curious: can anybody translate what "Fylkir" actually means? It seems to be a Icelandic given name (and the name of a football club from Reykjavik).

<fylkir> as-is is the plural of <fylki> in Icelandic, meaning "folk" or "county".
<Fylkir> as a name should mean "chieftain", "folk leader" and such equivalents. Am not an Icelander, but Lena Peterson agrees with me.

I had stopped, but I had to make a remark on what was alluded.

I will stop again now.

Red holiday, and turning up to work gets you lined up against a wall and shot.

No need to attack other people's ideology... :p

Will AI pagan rulers prefer taking their lovers as concubines?
Are concubines different than muslim secondary wives - can unmarried pagan take concubine, or if his wive dies one of concubines get promotion, like muslim wives did?
Will in final version pagans be allowed to keep cognatic succession? Given how keen they are on warfare and conquest, one might think at least magyars, norse and tengri be locked in agnatic.

PS: Thats it! I am modding in Communist faith! It will get Stalinist, Trockist, and Anarchosyndicalist heresies! And of course, all rulers tiers will be titled "Comrade".

SLAVS! I LOVE slavs! They're really nice eh guys? Always not getting eaten alive by the Kaiser and things like that. Yep, Slavs, pretty nice guys overall. So how many of you guys think that Poland's de jure territory kinda looks like a chicken leg?

I don't know about that, women where often land owners in Norse societies, and kings where known to give titles to their wives and lovers. I don't think you can really justify agnatic succession in such a society.

Anyone else sick of people complaining about the Devs cracking a mild joke about a 'holiday; that is, in many parts of the world, most noted for violent street protests? Get over it, people.

I agree. It was just a joke, and I feel that socialists/sensitive types out there who are getting extremely offended about it really need to stop. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, which in this case really wasn't phrased as an attack, rather just a complaint. It was even related to how May Day used to be a religious holiday, for god's sake.

Regarding Catholic Holy Sites, I'm curious if there was any inclination towards having Avignon be one of the sites, given that the team is not restricting itself to actual sites of, well, biblical importance (not to dismiss the religious importance that the great centers of worship have in the Church, of course).

Also, I'm curious if the Holy Sites have much bearing on the execution of Crusades/Jihads (I'm sure you already covered that, but I missed it). If so, perhaps it would make more sense for more of the Catholic Holy Sites to actually be in the Holy Land. If not, well, maybe it should. I've got a hunch that the Muslims will be launching repeated Jihads against anyone impertinent enough to take Mecca.

PS, anyone else miffed, at first, that there were three different sources of info on the upcoming expansion, all saying the same thing? Thank God (er, for all you people eager to play the Norse, Thor) for the forums, we got so much more new information in the replies.

Rest of forum had just finally convinced the other guy to stop. Its a joke.

Either talk CK or shut up, please.

I am no uber Muslim by any extent, but there isn't any "holy value" to Cordoba from theological perspective.

Maybe instead of Cordoba or Baghdad we could throw in that Al Zahar place.

Part of the choices would be gameplay - Cordoba itself may not be 'holy' but effectively losing the Reconquesta would damage the authority of the religion. Clustering all of islams holy sites in the middle east may be historically appropriate but basicly means that sunnis and shia are only fighting each other for MA with only crusades and the great purple blob to liven the fun.

even as Cairo might have been fitting, it's too close.

And its shia in game.

Okay, I'm starting to be excited about this DLC :) Good work. Thanks for the modability too.

I'll definitely be giving Norse a try first. Or second. I really want to play a Karling and reunite the Empire.

And its shia in game.
Does that matter?
The Shia and Sunni really shouldn't differ in sites, as their fundamental difference is in the succession of Muhammad (not that great a difference)
EDIT: And Jerusalem is Sunni and thus cannot be a Catholic holy site?

Maybe the two last cities are to show their " influence area " since Baghdad has always been a strong holding from the Sunni Caliphate.
Maybe will I get an answer : Can 2 sunni (shia) caliphs exist at the same time to model the Abbasid and the Ummayad ones ?
