Dev Diary #113 - Community Choice Event Pack

Greetings!

We’re all back, gathered from the holidays, and ready to set sail for 2023! Actually, most of us have been back for a few weeks by this point, working away on this year's big release, but we're not going to be talking about that just yet. That's not to say we're not going to in the future, but until we are ready to, we want to give you something to dig your teeth into as a community. This is the first of a small series of Dev Diaries about some more minor things, teasers, and today, about a brand-new community initiative!
But first, here’s a small teaser of something coming in the expansion:

Later this year, after we’ve released the next big expansion and before we start working on the next large project, we’ll have a period where we have the time and opportunity to work on an event pack. For the last event pack we chose ‘friends and foes’ as the core theme, as it was something practically everyone in the team felt strongly about, and something that needed more content in the game. Since then, we’ve had so many ideas for future event packs, both from within the team and outside, and this time it’s harder to choose…

Therefore we’d like to invite all of you to help us decide which theme to pick! We have three themes that we’ve curated, which means a few things; each theme has designers on the team that are passionate about them, and we know roughly what free feature we’d like to add to the update that will accompany the event pack: generally we'll be aiming for something with a similar size and impact as Friends & Foes' Memories system, which heavily ties into the events we're making but is relevant across the game as a whole.

We don’t have final names for the event packs yet, but as we enjoy alliteration here’s what we’re calling them and a very brief description of each:

Wards & Wardens - Anything childhood-related, with themes such as: playing as a child, being a guardian, handling children in court, and so on. A deep dive into what being a child in the Middle Ages was actually like, and what guardianship meant in practical terms.

Love & Lust - An exploration of more intimate relationships, with themes such as: expanded seduction, romance, married life, and so on. This would be a great time to allow lovers and spouses to take on a larger role in the game.

Villains & Vagabonds - Events and content around Dread and Tyranny, exploring what it means to be dreaded, leveraging your fearsome reputation, making dread more visible, and the consequences and opportunities of being a tyrant. It’d also be interesting to explore the other side of the coin from Dread - fairness, and honor.

Even though this event pack is something we’ll work on later this year, it’s good to get your input now - this way we can start working on it without delay as soon as the next big expansion is out! As we have a lot of talented event-crafters on the design team, we feel quite confident that we can adapt to whatever theme you, as a community, choose.

If this turns out to be a popular activity, it is possible that we will do it again in the future! The themes that do not get chosen this time will likely make a comeback, alongside some new challengers.

The poll to vote is located in a separate forum thread here. Voting will begin today and you will have until January 27, 8am CET to discuss the different themes and cast your vote. We’re looking forward to seeing which theme you like the most!

arent they also making a big dlc? how are you sure those features arent gonna be in the dlc or the free update that comes along with it?

That's right - but they've said it's going to be more of a roleplay expansion than a mechanical one - so it'll likely not address the mechanical stuff ("pandemics, regency, successions flavor, regional mechanics") that the other poster mentioned.

For me, I would choose Love and Lust.

Love & Lust.

For me it is a system that needs the most improvement out of all the ones available. The Seduction Tree in my opinion is the weakest in the game as it only helps getting more children, which is not a problem in the first place. The Seduction schemes are rote to the point where I never use them. Befriending is better since anyone can become your friend and there are events that lower your stress. Also marriage in the game is not very chellenging or engaging. I choose a partner only the congentinal traits and that is it. It is so easy to make your spouse like you even though both of you are diametrically opposite.

Case in point is my current ruler, who is Sadistic, Vengeful and Arbitrary. My spouse is Craven, Just and Temperate. My PC has split a baby in half, filled a forest with a miasma of excuted prisoners, has two murder schemes always active, totures and kills everyone that he captures. Despite my spouse being terrified of my PC, she still loves my PC!!! And my children love my PC as well, even though I killed two of them and everyone knows I did! My spouse should hate me and so should my children. There should be some events like that event where you can smuggle and relative back to your court and save them from a miserable marriage.

It seems the bridge is taking big inspiration from the style of the Pont Valentre in Cahors France, which is also touted as the Devils Bridge (from the devil bridge fable).

Ohoho! Devil’s Bridge, you say. So that means —

So maybe it is Monks and Mystics 2: Electric Boogaloo

Sigh

Way to make my joke before I could. I look forward to contracting with our dark lord for dread engineering techniques.

Or, perhaps even more Satanic, we shall have tolls.

Why not just do all three?
Opportunity cost. The Event Packs are a good way to spend time in between large expansions while we have people on post-release support and pre-production and production on the next, big thing. The scope of Event Packs are so concentrated that a smaller group can dive into it without a massive scope and flesh out a particular part of the game.

As an example: Friends and Foes was developed in the months between the Royal Court releasing and us working on the patches for it, and the Stockholm team committing to the expansion we are doing right now. They just threw themselves into it as an experiment, and we got Friends and Foes.

I'm sorry but new events for playing as/raising children needs to be a free update, not a paid pack, atm the events especially the personality ones are way too few. It needs more to it I agree but I feel like that is definitely more a need over a want.

That being said villains and vagabonds sounds cool but love and lust can make the RP a lot more fun and give you a reason to pick a spouse or lover you normally wouldn't.

They've already curated each theme, and considering the scope of the last event pack there really shouldn't be much time and/or opportunity cost.

Friends & Foes wasn't just a whole load of events, remember. Yes there were events and yes they took time, but it also included an entire code system (memories, programmer time), a script system (House Feuds, designer time), multiple new event backgrounds (2D artist time), multiple new animations (3D art time), music (audio time) and a whole host of other bits and pieces. We call them Event Packs and that puts a natural emphasis on the time spent making events (which is admittedly considerable) but these are not small endeavours we chuck together in a week and a half on a whim, they're concerted multi-discipline efforts.

As such, I can guarantee you there's an opportunity cost to doing any one of those. So choose wisely!

When you said "Why not just do all three?" - did you mean doing an events pack with (for example) 33 "Wards & Wardens" events, 33 "Love & Lust" events and 33 "Villains & Vagabonds" rather than doing an events pack with 100 events dedicated to only one theme?

Well since we're going to have something to do with tyranny and cruelty with Villains & Vagabonds could we have something the other way around too?
Like Herois & Virtudes, you know, there are people who like to play honorably trying to be a just king, protecting their people, fighting to return to their homeland that was taken unfairly by people who say that their only god is real ( I'm talking about the escape of the Sogdian people of Islam via the Silk Road ) respecting his wife while trying to give their children a good education...
Well from the current options I choose Wards & Wardens...

That's absolutely a possibility for Villains & Vagabonds! What is dread without honour to counteract it, after all?
