EU4 - Development Diary - 31st March 2016

dev diary.jpg

Hello and welcome back. Mare Nostrum will be upon us very soon so I will take this last dev diary before release to show some extras and the 15 new achievements which will be part of the 1.16 patch. With Wiz safely banished to the furthest reaches of space to make friends with Blorg, I am free to ensure there are no more Eastern Roman Empire related Achievements.

The 15 new achievements, which some clever cookies may have seen before are:
  • Mare Nostrum: Restore the Roman Empire and own the entire Mediterranean and Black Sea coast lines.

  • Kuban Cigars: As Kuba, own or have a subject own Havana and be the world’s leading producer of Tobacco.

  • Kushite Restoration: As a Nubian culture nation, own the entire Egyptian region as core provinces.

  • The Fezzan Corridors: As Fezzan, control at least 90% of the trade power in Tunis, Katsina, Safi and Timbuktu.

  • Victorian Three: As Basoga, Buganda or Karagwe, reach administrative, diplomatic and military technology level 32.

  • The Animal Kingdom: As Manipur, unite the Bengal region and convert it to Animism.

  • Golden Horn: As a Somali nation, fully own the Horn of Africa region and have a monthly gold income of at least 50 ducats.

  • Kinslayer: As Tver, Yaroslavl, Ryazan or Odoyev, eliminate all other Rurikovich nations without changing your ruling dynasty.

  • Choson One: As Korea, own or have a subject own all Shinto, Confucian and Buddhist provinces in the world.

  • Sailor Mon: As Pegu, have at least 100,000 sailors.
  • The White Company: Hire your army out to both sides in a war and fight in a battle against your former employer.

  • Networking: Have 100 point spy networks in 3 rival nations.

  • Time Bandit: Successfully steal a map from another nation.

  • With a little help..: As Ragusa, lead a Trade League of at least 5 nations and guarantee the Ottomans’ independence

  • Just Resting In My Account: Corrupt the officials in a rival country
eu4_2.jpg

Going hand-in-hand with one of these achievements, we have added one of the longest requested formable nations: The Roman Empire. It is no easy task to perform, requiring Christianity or Paganism and ownership of the regions of Italy, France, Iberia, Balkans, Anatolia, Mashriq as well as certain key provinces, but doing so will allow you to recreate the thousand year empire and grant you the new unique culture of Roman.

Forming Rome is a free feature, available as part of the 1.16 patch.

Next up is Timeline, a new Mare Nostrum feature

timeline1.jpg

At any point through your campaign you can hit the new timeline button next to the date and observe how the world has evolved throughout the years. Watch as empires rise and fall and re-live how your own nation rose to its great heights (hopefully)

timeline2.jpg

Opening Timeline will bring the map back to how it was at the start of your campaign and then you can choose at what speed to run through the world's history. You can pan all over the map during this timeline, so while the Big Blue Blob takes over Europe you can admire infighting new world natives or see which of the Daimyo's made Japan theirs.

The Converter is part of CK 2 not EU4 therefore it acts like a mod of sorts, is not in the base game(until 1.16 that is)
This is the same reason why people like me keeps bringing up the religions from the converter!
At least the religions should be able to get in the game without the converter (heck there even is an achievement where you must start as a custom nation with Norse culture). The reason being that you can't mod in new religions, so they need to be in the base game.

You know when you're playing an incomplete mod, and the devs leave a debug decision in? Gives you a million manpower, a million ducats, all that kind of stuff?

There's nothing wrong with it: the AI never chooses it, you can just choose not to click it. The game isn't affected one bit. And hey, if you want to press it, it's great that you've got the choice. But the decision still shouldn't be there! I shouldn't have to not click it!

(Unless there's a reason for that decision to be there. I don't think "blobbed everywhere and is a christian or pagan" is enough of one, without further qualifiers.)

What you've described are console commands. Specifically if you hit the ` button and type "cash 1000000" you will get a million ducats. Manpower is done in thousands so you'll need to hit the ` button and type "manpower 1000" to get a million manpower. Oh, quotes removed in both cases. Most other games I've played have console commands disabled and so you need to do some 9th grade software modding to turn them back on, but Paradox left them available for single player, non-iron man games. Wrap your mind around this, but you have been choosing not to click the 1,000,000 ducats button every time you've played a single player, non-iron man game.

Still, your point seems to be an ought claim about what the game 'should be.' You base your assertion of what ought to be by alluding to some benchmark that a decision must clear, some justification for its existence that you would call a reason. And while you do admit that it's only your judgement that 'blobbed everywhere and is a christian or pagan' doesn't clear that threshold, you seem pretty confident in holding that position regardless.

But consider that your version of what the game ought to be stands opposed to other people's version of what this game ought to be and simply declaring what ought to be is not an argument. In fact, the two of us could go back and forth, at length, about what this game ought to be, what criteria should be weighed in determining the optimal course to make the game what it ought to be, and what the relative level of importance for each of those criteria would be. And we would both be talking about two different games, maybe subtly differnet, maybe dramatically different.

But I don't think that would be a productive use of our time for the simple reason that neither of us have the necessary authority to make such decisions. As it so happens the people who do have that authority have made a decision on this very topic. So instead a more interesting use of our time would be to look at the decisions made by those with the authority to make such decisions and try to figure out what they think the game ought to be. Whether you agree or not, someone clearly thought there was a reason to add a Roman Empire tag to be unlocked by a dramatic bit of conquest in Europe. They thought that reason compelling enough to put the work into generating it, and they thought the addition significant enough to highlight before the launch. Clearly this means the people designing the game disagree with you, at least in part, about what the game should be. But it would be interesting if we could figure out why they disagree with you, and what predictions that allows us to make about future patches.

@DDRJake ,

A) Can you please rework the Reform Rome decision to be more flexible and accessible?

For instance:

Byzantium can Reform Rome if:
1) Byzantium Controls the regions of Italia, the Balkans, and Anatolia, and reforming immediately grants a CB to dismantle the HRE.

2) Italy can Reform Rome if it controls Italia, the Balkans, and Anatolia, and reforming immediately grants a CB to dismantle the HRE.

3) French nations can if they control Francia, Iberia, Italia and the Balkans, and reforming immediately grants a CB to dismantle the HRE.

Iberian nations can if they control Iberia, southern France, Italia, Anatolia, and the Balkans, and reforming immediately grants a CB to dismantle the HRE.

B) Can you also change the colour of the Roman Empire to not be neon pink?

Maybe more of an amber-red, or maybe a blood-red?

Or any of these:

I think you are missing the critical point of this expansion: only those who established unrivaled rule of the mediteranean (achieved Mare Nostrum) could have the right to claim itself as the true succesor of Rome.

I get that, but you don't need Northern France, half of Britain, and Iraq for that.

While these are all really good suggestions, I doubt DDRJake is going to be devoting the time to implementing them.

Only Russia is real Roman Empire!

Really? Even the continuation of the Roman Empire that Russia claimed to be the continuation of isn't the Roman Empire?

"The Tale of the Princes of Vladimir" or Philotheus of Pskov - Moscow is Rome... Third Rome... Russia is Roman Empire... Third Roman Empire...

You can mod in new religions... it's just a real pain because of the graphics issue.

I don't think you got the point I was making...

i see in the religion folder there isn't the hellenic religion in pagan group
That's because is not in the basic game, why do you think I bring it up every time this kind of stuff is discussed lol
It is however in the Pagan Group in the Converter and since Norse was added in the Pagan group is fair to assume the same will happen with Hellenism once is added(which hopefully it'll be in 1.16)

You mean plural, third person would be "Chlodio was simply suggesting that they would reconsider...".
Prrrreeeecioussssss....

Probably want to include a requirement that the Byzantine Empire must not exist.

Also allow the Russians to form it if they hold Constantinople+the entire Black Sea coast+some parts of Anatolia and/or the Levant (Third Rome).

Also perhaps give the Ottomans the chance to restore it even if they are Muslim if they hold Constantinople, Rome and Vienna. They did claim to be the successor to the Romans (Sultanate of Rum), did conquer just about the entire Eastern empire's borders, and those three cities are the most vital for any power to claim the Roman legacy, regardless of religion. Although that would make quite a few people a bit peeved, I suppose.

Can you also change the colour of the Roman Empire...
