EU4 - Development Diary - 9th of October 2018

Welcome all to today’s dev diary, where I’ll be covering the long-awaited Iberian and North African map update coming in the 1.28 ‘Spain’ update.

Nations released for the sake of example

As things currently stand, though as always things are subject to change before release, Iberia consists of 571 development over 63 provinces. This includes the Macaronesia area but now excludes Labourd, which has been returned to the French region.

In Aragon, the distinction between the Kingdom of Aragon, the Kingdom of Valencia, and the Principality of Catalonia has become more pronounced. Tarragona is now rightly in the Catalonia area, and the province of Valencia has been split so that Castello and Xativa have become separate provinces. Valencia itself has the potential to be a very rich city indeed, as the player’s actions can lead to it becoming a major producer of silk. The three major Balearic Islands have become provinces in and of themselves, linked together by a strait and comprising their own Area.

Likewise, Galicia has seen itself grow from 1 province to 4, and now has an Area all to itself.

Portugal and Granada have been gifted one additional province each: Aveiro and Malaga respectively.

Last but not least, many citizens of Navarra are looking a little confused as they wonder where their coastline has gone. Wedged between major powers and with no immediate means of escape over the ocean, Navarra will be a very challenging nation in 1.28.

New releasable nations:

Valencia: The Kingdom of Valencia was a major constituent part of the Crown of Aragon in 1444. In 1.28 the former kingdom of El Cid will be a releasable nation.

Asturias: The Kingdom of Asturias ceased to exist long before our start date, but it nicely fills the absence of releasable nations in the region.

I’ve also taken another look at North Africa. Here we can see several new provinces along the coast, including those belonging to new nations that can emerge during the game.

The province of Demnate allows a route through the Atlas mountains; a convenient shortcut and potentially a deadly choke-point.

The Canary Islands have been split between Gran Canaria and Tenerife to represent the somewhat incomplete Castilian conquest and colonization of the islands.

For the masochists among you who play as Granada, they now have a core on the province on Ceuta.

New releasable nations:

Salé and Tétouan: Home to some of the most infamous Barbary Pirates, these nations will be releasable in 1444, and may emerge dynamically in the course of the game in the style of Habsan.

Finally, I’ve made some minor changes to the eastern Maghreb. The province of Kairwan has been added for Tunis, and the addition of Sabha has allowed a more aesthetic redrawing of Fezzan’s borders.

That’s all for today. Next week, @Groogy will reveal some of the new features coming in the as yet unnamed Immersion pack to be released alongside 1.28.

Reactions:
And they STILL have Sevilla's river estuary named "Guadiana" instead of "Guadalquivir", this not to mention the root of the Tagus and (Asturias root) the Douro were drawn incorrectly because of completely separate rivers being nearby.

#neverliveitdown
River-placement has never really been accurate, but I do agree with your point on the estuary.

Is this a quick patch like the Poland one or actually a bigger update? Would love if Spain got some mechanics to recreate the Spanish conquest of the new world more accurately. Also maybe more interaction with the Italian peninsula and the Habsburgers?

Guess I'll just have to wait what exactly just wondering on the scale of patches were this one is. Something like the Poland patch or more like the Dharma patch? I could understand if this is more like the England / Russia patch were there was a DLC allong with the update, which is more in between a very small and a very large patch.

I'm guessing the latter as a huge patch like Dharma would probably take you longer and I would assume you would want to drop this patch before Christmas in 5 / 6 weeks or so of you have an DLC attached :p Sure hope it's a little bit bigger then the Poland patch, have long been waiting for a Iberian patch and I really hope Spain can shine after this patch as this game starts at the beginning of the Spanish golden age. Could be better represented imo, but just give me a hint if it's a big patch or not and I'll at least know that and wait patiently for the other dev diaries XD

Immersion pack, so comparable to the England- or Russia-patch. ;)

It's going to be an immersion pack. But seeing how sloppy the map rework has been, I fear the pack would be that way too. I wish I am mistaken.:(

I don't think it will be related, as they're completely different aspects of the game.

I have high hopes for the rework, fingers crossed for tomorrow's dev diary. Castille/Spain is one of my favourite nations.

As far as I know, they've only corrected the "Lleida" issue so far, in page 26.
As well as some city-placements and the names of Extremadura and Castilla la Vieja. Nothing on Portugal or the Maghreb yet, though.

Suffice it to say, more attention was payed in turning The Baleares into 3 provinces and adding a colonizable province to the Canaries (nothing against it) than in adding more to Portugal. At least that is how it feels when I look at the map changes. Also no salt and the Gulf of Cadiz bathing the Alentejo makes me laugh.

Makes me cry :(

Disappointing.

Kingdom of Asturias, incorrect.
Kingdom of Valencia, incorrect.
Kingdom of Castile, incorrect.

In short, it is what it is.
Valencia and Asturias look correct. Heck, most of Iberia looks correct, it only needs a little touch-up here and there and some additions.

Unless you really want 100% correct borders of its provinces, which I can assure you, almost never happens anywhere anyway.

Cantabria / Santander and Vizcaya is the Kingdom of Castile, not Asturias.

Yes, but their location is correct. The kingdom of Asturias once controlled those lands, too, didn't they? I understand that those lands were not its core, but still. The tag exists to make Balkanising of Iberia possible.

Still, maybe creating a releasable Taifa of Cordoba or Toledo in the South would make more sense. But I don't want to get into that argument, enough has been said on that. I am not opposed to the Kingdom of the Asturias tag at all.

I understand that everyone is worried about the Iberian Peninsula, but such maghreb got not many changes in the provinces the same Canary Islands two provinces, it's a minimum of three should be to show a bit better conquest of islands.
-Of course, increasing the number of provinces in the Canary Islands from the current two to three should not be a problem terribly hurts me that Gran Canaria belongs in 1444 to the kingdom of castile as conquered the island only 1480
and here a map showing the conquests of the islands

Here are the information about the Canary Islands collected:https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...slands-and-the-tribe-of-the-guanches.1123364/

If any of the creators have the time to spend a little time to check this thread, I would be grateful I hope that they will be helpful and that something will change on the Canary Islands

Yes, and the Kingdom of León also controlled them and not for that reason they are part of that kingdom, indeed, Leon also controlled the Duchy of Portugal and does not appear as part of that kingdom either.

In short, this is going around the same thing over and over again, to do what they want.

Greetings.

The only "historical" tag that comes to my mind is the Kingdom of Murcia.
Originally it was a moorish kingdom that became a Castillian protectorate until a rebellion sponsored by Granada and North African volunteers expelled the Castillians. However, their success was short-lived and a Castillian-Aragonese alliance took Murcia again.
This tag could have Murcia, Alacant and perhaps Albacete as cores.

I know this happened 180 years before the game starts, but I think it's a much better option than Asturias. Besides, technicaly this kingdom still existed.
