EUIV - Development Diary - 11th of February 2020

Hello! So today I will be talking about two smaller sized features coming with the expansion that will be accompanying the 1.30 Patch.

As part of our improvements to the Catholic faith, which we will revisit in a later dev diary, we want to give the player a carrot for keeping their brethren alive. So with that in mind for all religions that can use Defenders of the Faith mechanic, they are getting a bit of an uplift to emphasise that you defend a faith, not only something you claim to be.

So what we’ve done is that we gave the Defender of the Faith 5 tiers that are dependent upon how many nations are following that faith. The more you are defending the more your title as the faith’s defender has as worth to the people and your neighbours. At the highest tier the entire faith gets a bonus together.

The 5 Tiers available to the Defender of the Faith.

Tier 1 - 1 to 4 Countries
  • +1 Missionaries
  • -10% Missionary Maintenance Cost
Tier 2 - 5 to 9 Countries
  • +1 Missionaries
  • -10% Missionary Maintenance Cost
  • +5% Land Morale
  • +5% Naval Morale
  • +1 Prestige
Tier 3 - 10 to 19 Countries
  • +1 Missionaries
  • -10% Missionary Maintenance Cost
  • +5% Land Morale
  • +5% Naval Morale
  • +1 Prestige
  • -0.03 War Exhaustion
Tier 4 - 20 to 49 Countries
  • +1 Missionaries
  • -10% Missionary Maintenance Cost
  • +5% Land Morale
  • +5% Naval Morale
  • +1 Prestige
  • -0.03 War Exhaustion
  • +20% Manpower in True Faith Provinces
Tier 5 - 50+ Countries
  • +1 Missionaries
  • -10% Missionary Maintenance Cost
  • +5% Land Morale
  • +5% Naval Morale
  • +1 Prestige
  • -0.03 War Exhaustion
  • +20% Manpower in True Faith Provinces
  • -20% Missionary Maintenance Cost on all members of that Faith, including DotF.
Besides the mechanical changes we’ve also given the Defender of the Faith more flavour by giving the feature a bunch of unique events and content that can appear for whoever that claims the title.

The second feature of today is a little thing that just lets you get on with your business a bit faster by not having to sit and wait for rebels to pop so you can deal with them immediately.

It requires the faction to have already reached a progression of 50% before this option can be picked and when done it will cause those rebels to appear 50% stronger than they would have usually. You can also not use this feature at war so you can not rebel bomb your opponents with it.

Next Development Diary coming next week will be covering one feature that is part of the expansion but also free quality of life features. The focus of the features will be to make management of your empire easier and more bearable.

Reactions:
Shouldnt the bonuses regarding DotF works the different way? Less countries of your faith - more bonuses you have? Or at least, more dev of true faith your country have, stronger your claim is?

If you were to change the system to the suggestion of tying the tiers into development or number of provinces, but also keep the number of countries affecting things, perhaps make it so the requirements are tiered as well.

So if there are dozens of countries following a faith, then overall the religion only needs a small amount of dev/provinces across them all.

But if there are only a handful of countries left, then the Dev/Number of Provinces required in total by the religion is significantly higher.

Hm. Let's say we are 1700 and you play as the Ottomans and you are defender of faith. But there are no 50+ countries having your religion not because they were conquered by another religion but because of natural progression ingame in that there are fewer countries over time. All countries that had your religion could have been conquered by countries of your own religion.

What if the number of global provinces of your religion count as bonus?

Having the tiers scale with number of countries somewhat makes sense imo, as DotF is another form of guarantee, so a higher number of countries increases the difficulty of being DotF. Thats not to say that defending few larger nations can't also turn out to be quite hard.

Scaling it with development or provinces would express how powerful/far spread a religion is, but wouldn't necessarily indicate how challenging the job of DotF is.
For example being DotF wouldn't be difficult and shouldn't be considered prestigious and high tier in that regard, if theres only one extremely strong country of that faith.

I guess it depends on what the mechanic is meant to represent and reward, strength of the religion or difficulty of defending it.
Maybe it could be a combination of both or earning the tiers by aiding true faith countries.

Some thoughts:

Number of countries to me feels like the wrong requirement.

I hope that now female rulers can become defender of the faith.

Please grant defender of the faith to more religions, these are bonuses and a mechanic that make sense with most religions and it would be nice to be the defender of the animist faith.

I think that total development of your religion in other countries is what should matter.

Also you should be called in to support rebels of your religion in other countries.

What about bonuses every time you assist a true faith country? One thing could be a small boost in relations with similar religion countries.

Counting countries seems wrong, but counting development isn't great either.

Maybe it can simply scale with time until a war is lost?

I would also like to see "provinces of own faith held by heretics/heathens" taken into account as a malus, as well as having important provinces (Centers of Reformation, Rome, Jerusalem, Mecca, ...) under the faiths control being important - similar to how coptic works.

And lastly, maybe the Defender of the Faith CB could be tweaked, to be more often available.

Good point will take into consideration

Here is an idea: how about measuring defenders of the faith by actual job performance? That is, making defenders earn credit by actually defending fellow nations from infidels.

Every new defender starts at level 1, and earns points each time it answers a defender call to arms and successfully defends. It loses some credit if the war is lost, and it loses a lot if it either declines the call or renders "unsatisfactory condottieri performance". When the defender reaches a certain number of points, it gets promoted (or demoted).

How much each war is worth depends on how big the infidel opponents are. If you keep fighting off Ottomans on behalf of others, you deserve a prize for it.

So DotF Mana? :p Just kidding it would be a very different way of doing something similar yeah.

I'm so excited to see the Provoke Rebels button. It's so annoying to have a bunch of 90%'s and you can't realistically do anything about it other than spending hundreds of MIL points.

Awesome stuff, I can't wait for next week.

Personally i think it should be dev for the true faith or something, this doesnt fix the problem with catholics i.e monopolizing the curia for the bonuses will still want you to destroy the other catholics

This looks amazing! It will give an interesting "try to force convert-spread religion" to get better modifiers. It will be both good for roleplayers and competitive (one faith will be ""easier"" with 1 more missionary).

What happened to the +5% increase in technology cost? Why did you remove it? It made sense with the whole "i'm blindly following the religion, F** Galileo for that book"
All scholars of the time were deeply religious so no, it made no sense

What's wrong with that? You already have the mechanism in place; this is how old HRE imperial authority used to work i.e. points for beating off France.

Why not adapt it for defender if it gives a better way to measure performance? The title "defender" is suggestive, after all.

Best of all, a defender won't get many points if it already owns everything and has no religious allies to defend.
