Europa Universalis IV - 8 June 2021 - New monuments chosen for 1.31.5

Good news everyone! Today we’ll be presenting the new monuments that shall be introduced in 1.31.5 (coming soon, for those who wonder).

But first, let me introduce myself. I’m Pavía, and I’ve been a forumite for more than 15 years before joining Paradox Tinto team, a couple months ago. Apart from being in the Forums, I’ve spent most of this time playing Paradox games for thousands of hours, since the first Europa Universalis. Oh, and I also hold a Ph.D. in Medieval History, but that’s probably the less important thing in my current CV.

That said, onto the monuments. First I’ll present to you the ones that were most voted among the community:

The first is El Escorial, the famous palace-monastery built at the orders of king Philip II in the outskirts of Madrid:

The second one is the Holy City of Jerusalem. As it’s known, this city is a sacred place for Judaism, Christianism and Islam, and that religious crossroad is portrayed:

Finally, the last one most voted was Cerro Rico del Potosí, the richest silver mine in South America, and a place that once hosted the most populous city in the region.

But, apart from that, the Tinto team also voted for three more internally:

Last, but not least, is the Imperial City of Hue, built by the Nguyen dynasty as a symbol for a unified Dai Viet.

Finally, we got a lot of feedback from the community, and we also think that it’s a good idea to replace one of the current monuments for other more interesting choice, and reworking it, as this was pretty requested:

That is the Belém Tower replacing the Pena Palace in Lisbon, as we think that it’s a symbol of the city since the Age of Discoveries.

Nothing about the expand empire cb causing too much agressive expansion has been said yet. Are we finally going to see fixes to game breaking bugs in this patch?

Please...please... Fix the bugs first. You can't play the HRE emperor right now because of the expand empire cb bug. It's frustrating. I've been wanting to play Austria for months and wasted many hours testing to see if the glitch has been fixed yet.

Very nice changes! I just have a few points/questions, some have already been asked and even answered like the Jerusalem holy city maybe being more about religious unity whereas the Kaaba could be more about conversion, but my main question would be:

Since the holy city now gives an extra missionary at lvl 3, will the missionary from having Jerusalem itself disappear?

are you thinking to include some guanche's stuff like cueva pintada or guimar piramids?

Different part of the team, I'm working with the technical people to highlight all the bug reports we're getting. They're being worked on, don't worry!

Good to see the totally ahistorical (for the game's time frame) Pena Palace go. Not that I think about getting Leviathan, of course, but it's good to see feedback being taken into account (should have been more so, and more often).
On a different note:

I totally relate with this ;)

Nice addition. I hope Korea & Italy & Germany get monument next time.
Santa Maria del Fiore and Brandenburg Gate were really closed on being added, so those will probably be part of next addition wave.
No love for Korea...? :(

It's not like there's a lack of historically important monuments in the Peninsula, nor the lack of Korean players to incentivise doing so - both Japan and China get three monuments each, Korea having zero's kinda sad.

As @Mordred Viking said, different people work on different areas. Just because today we announced new Monuments does not mean we do not work on bug fixes or that we are sacrificing bug fixes for them.

In your specific case the expand empire AE bug should be fixed for 1.31.5 as far as I can see.

I'm actually impressed by the way they handled this. I imagine there'd have been backlash regardless of whether they respected the vote (which can be argued to be rigged) or disqualified those monuments (while people actually voted for them). Instead they decided to pick an additional three monuments to add right now, for a total of six rather than three. I honestly don't see any reason for complaining.

Besides, keep in mind that they already said they are planning to add all of those monuments at some point (or that they are on the shortlist, in any case); all we were voting for was priority. If you're missing any particular monument in this update, it might very well be added in the next one :)
I don't se why using you YT ch. to suggest voting out of "national pride" is rigging a vote. We considered that Potosí and to a "lesser" extend Escorial were relevant to EU4 time line.

There were very interesting monuments in the vote. And the election was fair under the proposed mechanics. I'm not Spaniard but as an Latam player i though Potosí was essential.

Jerusalem and Mecca were an unavoidable obligation. St. Maria dei Fiore was a solid choice given the Reinassance in early game. Hope it gets added sometime.

I agree. No body has the need to feel salty. But given how angry they were in that post. No wonder that after their complaint wasn't heeded. They will remain salty out of sole resentment.

Quite inmature and pointless of them in my opinion

This is fine, though I'd rather have Achievements that I can do in the areas that were added, instead of the random things we got... of course this is dependent on the fixes of the new patch and a re balance of the out of control dev provinces currently have.

Will the monuments give extra bonuses for building them on top of controlling the holy cities as various religions, or will they completely replace them? Will Christian denominations no longer get a bonus for controlling Mecca and Medina for instance?

Mt. Paektu is a must, imo. If Jp has Fuji. Why not Korea would have Paektu. Given the Korea and Manchu MT has some flavour related Mt Paektu. Some other korean man made would be nice as well.

Great work! Quick question though, will there be any improvements to performance with 1.31.5? All these changes look great but my labtop has really been struggling with performance in 1.31 and Leviathan.

Im not mad or salty about the monuments that won, because i wasn't lucky enough to see a monument of my country or region in there anyway.

BUT i despise CHEATING, and thats clearly what some people went through to get Potosi and El Escorial in earlier. There has been enough evidence posted of people making extra accounts just to vote for the same monuments and a majority of them almost exclusively voting for Potosi and El Escorial.

If you think its petty to claim, oh well its just a vote, you will get your monuments later, than I can make the same argument for the fact that people would go to the effort to rig it.

I would have hated it as well if someone had done it for Brandenburger Tor or Santa Maria del Fiore, but that didn't happen.

There was rigging, it may have been by a small group or one user, but it did happen

No point to go into it again,

But here is an example of two fake accounts. View attachment 729286
If you are so salty and angry about it. Make yourself a mod to remove them out the game for you and your pals. No point in forum complaining out of ressent.
Please. Would you keep your salt only for your breakfast eggs, and let it be??

Clearly not reading what I said, Im not salty about the monuments, I despise cheating.

Whats done is done, but yeah.

Another issue is just the typical community of these people who want it making insults against me or others who bring up that cheating is not okay.

What I dont get is why people like yourself seem to be fine with cheating, call it out, show that this community is better than that.

Well, I don't even care about the monuments at this point when there is a lot of mods adding them anyway + the ones you are presenting will not fix the big hole in Eastern Europe too so I would prefer 1.31.5 to provide some useful patches fixing endless bugs and issues instead.

I love all the new monuments, and the updated Portuguese Monument is just icing on the cake!

I'm still on 1.30.6 until the balance issues with Concentrate Dev/Pillage Capital gets fixed, but I'm glad to see things are moving in the right direction. I hope the balance issues get fixed soon so that i can buy Leviathan and try these out!
