Stellaris Dev Diary #49 - Graphics & Portraits

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris development diary. This development diary will cover improvements made to graphics in the Heinlein update and new species portraits coming in both Heinlein and the Leviathans Story Pack.

Improved Bloom Shader (Free Feature)
One of the features we really wanted to get in for release but never could was the improved bloom shader. Bloom is now days a dirty word, and has a bad reputation from previous generations overuse. But when used correctly it really makes thing look amazing. A game like Stellaris where so many things are glowing, ship windows and engines, stars, laser weapons etc. We had most of the code done before release, but once we switch over, everything in the game which was glowing needed to be tweaked, and in some cases needed code.
During Heinlein we had some time for this and now its all fixed so the star burn bright and the lasers glow.

We also spent a little bit of time improving the planet city textures.

New Portraits
Both before and after the release of Stellaris we've received a lot of different requests for new species portraits. Among the more frequent requests are to make more 'alien' aliens, and this is something we tried to address before release, adding a large number of non-human shaped aliens. Another common request, that I felt we did *not* address, was for more 'cute', 'pretty' and 'humanlike' aliens. Sure, we have your basic humans and there's the ever-lovable space foxes, but we've noticed that quite a few people tend to play *only* as humans or *only* as space foxes, and we wanted to give these people some more options to play with. For this reason we decided to do a new round of portraits, with the work split between 'cuties' and 'humanlike' aliens.

Humanoid Portraits Pack (Free Feature)
Humanlike (or 'rubber forehead' as they're sometimes derisively called) aliens is something we intially avoided putting into Stellaris, focusing on more alien species to give a sense of the galaxy as a diverse place full of different lifeforms. However, I felt that in doing so we overlooked the fact that there is quite a few people who actually want to play as, and encounter, more humanlike aliens, as they are something that we as humans can more easily recognize and relate to than say, a sentient crab. For this reason we decided to create a new species class called 'humanoids' that is essentially mammalians that look more like humans than other mammalians, and made 4 new portraits for this category that will be given to everyone in the free Heinlein update. Humanoids do not have their own city graphics or ships as they are essentially mammalians and mostly only have their own group for interface sorting purposes. When making portraits going into the future, we will continue to focus primarily on 'alien' aliens, and humanlike ones will always be very much in the minority, but they will still be there for those that want them.

Cuties Portraits Pack (Paid Feature)
The cuties, on the other hand, are simply something we very much know that many people (including myself) wanted: More cute species. We decided to focus on adding them to the species classes that didn't already have something cute, and also to species classes that had fewer portraits than the others.

That's all for this week! Next week, Heinlein and the Leviathans Story Pack will be coming out, so we are now officially all tapped out on content to show you for them. However, be sure to watch the release stream and today's Extraterrestial Thursday stream for further previews and sneak peeks. We will also be posting the 16-page patch notes sometime during next week, so keep your eyes peeled for that as well.

Don't forget our Extraterrestrial Thursday Livestream - Today (Thursday) at 15:00CEST on https://www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive

not to judge but people really request: Cutties race find that very hard to believe.
Stellaris is still a Game and It is more a Fun-Issue of Looking so "cute", but Playing the "evil" Purger of the Galaxy or its "serious" Defender like Lord Nibbler in Futurama.^^

Cheers for the DD Wiz (and the cameo VO work LetterZ) :). Bloom looks slick, and new portraits look great, and I can dig having a humanoid group (and very much dig the alien aliens ). That said:

as they are something that we as humans can more easily recognize and relate to than say, a sentient crab.

Your lack of empathy for sentient crabs has been noted :p. Best of luck for the launch, looking forward to giving Heinlein a play :).

Stellaris has indeed become beautiful! I can't wait for next week! I can't wait to get back to it... I haven't played it in 5 mos.

Goddamn it Paradox... next time try releasing DLCs and major patches for your major games with one month gap in between... I haven't started a new campaign in CK2 with the latest patch, I haven't fully explored EU4 yet and now this. I am so torn on which one to play first!

Bit of a shameless plug there dude. Also, I meant ones made by the devs specifically. I don't like the one you linked because it has a Grey alien in a starfleet suit which looks completely out of place. You have non-humanoid, non-humanoid, non-humanoid, and then suddenly humanoid.

With all due respect though, I use http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=688140428&searchtext=extended

Nah. It's cool - more of a tongue-in-cheek plug, actually. The extended species are cool, but I like using ones I've created. Not for everyone, I know. So it's all good.

Cheers,
~S

Just to clarify, are the new portraits INCLUDED in Leviathans, or is a separate content pack?

One more voice for an option to remove the humanoids without a mod. Especially the cringey space elves. I'd even like to remove humans from my game. All alien aliens.

Also, sexual dimorphism in nonhumanoid species would be awesome. It doesn't need to be all of them, just some.

And where are the fish type species portraits? It's a pretty big group of life to ignore. I mean, we got plants for crap's sake.

Lighting looks good, and the cuties are neat.

For the next patch I'd love more ship types. I know you were inspired by animals and such but the mammalian ship times look like space garbage haulers. They'd be good representations for an early space-faring race but I don't want to be stuck with boxes, or something completely alien looking if I want to play humans or humanoids.

I'd like more customization for ships as well, plantoid ships w/o the leaf solar sails and with different colors or even ship progression where you start to look more and more like the fallen empires ships as you grow more technologically advanced and do repeatables =p

But please, humans would be making the sleek sexy looking ships like our fighter jets we have now before they'd make garbage haulers that might work better for civilian ships.

I'd love for space pirates to be playable too, why not have alternatives to being a space empire? This would also go a long way to spicing up multiplayer with some people playing different roles like a role-playing game. Like Players 1 thru 5 being normal empires, player six pirates and players 7 and 8 fallen empires.

I do agree on this.
I'd love to see "humanoid" spaceships, at least less bulkier versions of the mammalian ones.

Excellent new portraits! Didn`t like the ones that shipped with the game, they were all so horribly ugly! There was only like 2 or 3 I was willing to use. But these... I`d be happy to use all of these ones!
