Stellaris Dev Diary #66: Graphics & Interface in Banks

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris development diary. We're getting close to release, so today's dev diary is the last dev diary for Utopia/Banks, and will cover a couple of graphical and interface changes coming in the free 1.5 'Banks' update.

Ship Coloring
Something that's hardly gone unnoticed in the screenshots and streams is that the ships in Banks look different than from before. We've mentioned wanting to make each empire's ships more distinct so that no two Fungoid empires would have the exact same ships. In Banks, your flag color will affect the coloring and lighting of your ships, as well as the color of the engine trails they leave. The exact way in which the coloring affects the ships depends heavily on the ship style you're using, but the overall effect should be that your empire's ships feel much more distinct and that it's easier to tell apart the ships of different empires at a glance.

Map Colors
Another tweak we've done to make empires more distinct is to add a bit more color variety on the map. Instead of each empire having the exact color shade of their flag, there is now a number of valid colors for each map color, so that two empires with the same blue flag will have at least slightly different shades of blue on the map. Who gets what shade is determined by the spawn order of the empires, so in most instances the player will get the 'original' flag color, and other empires with the same flag color will get other variants. While this change won't eliminate every case of border confusion (there's only so many distinct shades of light blue), it should at least help cut down on it.

Primitive Galaxy Map Icons
Another interface addition in Banks is the ability to see Primitive Civilizations on the galaxy map. Any system containing a Primitive Civilization you have discovered, either through surveying or acquiring star charts, will show up as a special icon in the galaxy map informing you of their presence in that particular system. If an Observation Post is constructed above that Primitive Civilization's planet, the icon will change to reflect this.

Details Mapmode
The last topic we're going to cover is how we've reworked the Details Mapmode in Banks. Or more specifically, how we've reworked the Details Mapmode when it's toggled off. Previously, having the Details Mapmode off would show you almost no information, while having it toggled on would show you everything. In Banks, having the Details Mapmode on works exactly the same way as before, showing you all information about system resources, colonizeable planets, anomalies, etc. Having it off, however, will now aim to show you all *important* information. What this means is that it will show you unexploited resources in your own and unclaimed systems, but hide resources that are either already being exploited by you or are inaccessible to you due to being inside another empire's borders. It will show you planets you are able to colonize, but hide planets that cannot be colonized, and so on. This should make for a better default mode that leaves your map cluttered without hiding important information you need to expand your empire.

That's all for today! Next week, instead of a regular dev diary, we're going to publish the full patch notes for Banks and Utopia. There'll be some choice teasers from the patch notes coming over the week, so stay tuned!

Details map improvements are really nice. Ultimately you might want to consider just a big bunch of toggles for all these show/hide options as not everybody agrees on "only what is important". Might be a good alternative to the bazillion map modes in EU4 as well. :)

However, the real treat: No longer hunting down primitives in the diplomacy overview, click on go to, zoom and figure out if they are exploitable (in your system) or not. :D
I like the bazillion mapmodes in EUIV, but yeah, I agree with you on the primitives.

Can we please get a way to change other empires colours and/or emblems.

I ask because I'm colourblind and even with this adjustment to literal same colours (ie, shades of blue, shades of red etc), I still constantly get adjacent empires which are not the same physical colour, but look the same to me.

Of course my biggest disappointment with Stellaris remains the lack of message settings, I utilize them so heavily in EUIV, CKII, and Vicky II... It hurts to not have messages I consider important pop up and pause the game. I assume they weren't added to make multiplayer easier, but I rely on those pop ups in the other games. I practically can't play without them.

If it make you feel better. I have seen people downvote a "sensible" comment just because they misunderstood something fairly common. Also lazy way of disagree without saying why.

Oh, that's what you meant. Ok, there definitely is some yellow in there. I hope that is not just a dev-mode-Thing.

My main question is why not just broaden the flag color palette? My number one frustration when managing my seventeen races is I have to repeat color combos A LOT. Why bank on mods when the vanilla could be just as rich and diverse?

It's really strange since there was a mod early after launch that added over 2000 new RGB colours. There are also 1.4 compatiable mods which add 120 or 48 colours.

Some fantastic quality of life updates here. I'm really looking forward to the whole Banks/Utopia release. In all, it's amazing to see how much the game's changed (universally for the better, in my opinion) in less than one year after release.

Also:
I find it strange that we can go from a fanatic egalitarian xenophile empire to a fanatic authoritarian xenophobic empire and yet not be able to change the design of my flag. Even if this does not become a feature I would at least want it to be possible to mod it in (I'm not sure if it currently is possible to do, I haven't seen any mods that allow you to do this so far) although I would love it to become an official feature.
This would be an excellent addition, to get a popup option to redesign empire flag/name on Reform Government. In HOI4, it's a fun and thematic thing that nation flag and name changes on ideological shift. Having a manual way to reflect that in Stellaris would be great in a similar way, and it would certainly fit the internal politics theme of the Banks update.

It is always about time. Everything has a time and a place, so without Time what would we all be about really. ;)
Spoken like a true RTS fan.

Preeetty sure that's already in the game. It's a color I use a lot...

The closest we have right now is a (admittedly lovely) shade of orange:

What Wiz has been tweeting is a much yellower colour:

I have a question about the new ship colors. There are many mods out there that add tons of new colors (hundreds in some cases). Will the new ship colors system be able to utilize those mods or will it render them useless?

I think it would be more helpful to give every nation's territory a "border" of the secondary flag color. Not a really thick border...or maybe its depth is a percentage of the overall territory size. Small empires would have thinner borders, and huge empires would have very thick borders.

Maybe it could be done similarly where the ships are the primary flag color, while the engine trails are the secondary.

It would make for a lot of variety just in itself, and I don't think it would be much more difficult than what you've already done. But obviously, it can wait for another update, now.

An other Concern ...
After the major Overhaul of the Ships with their Sections and Modules, We've got a Lot of Stuf like X-Weapons, Torpedos or Auxiliary-Slots ...
But some of the Ship-Sections weren't "updated", so that Some of the Graphics aren't shown: X-Weapons haven't Ones at All and I've seen some Bugs for L-Weapons, too ...

Is This fixed in V-1.5 ?

Is there a plan to expand ship sections at all? The vanilla ship sections are very limited in what is available which then in turn limits the ability to custom build fleets to counter other empires.

Also is there anything in the works to expand the vanilla race traits? Anything to expand the number of events that can be triggered?

Great looking changes coming. I cannot wait to try it all out! That being said, I think you missed a real opportunity here:

If you really wanted us to get excited about this, you should have made ship coloring something that could be done in the ship builder. Guess a bunch of us will just continue to use modded ship colors.
