Tinto Flavour #13 - 11th of April 2025 - Saxony

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Fridays in which we take a look at the flavourish content of the super-secret Project Caesar!

This Wednesday, we had a Tinto Talks related to the HRE, so it may be fitting to take a look today at another German country with unique flavour content: Saxony! Let’s start without further ado:

The County of Meissen, a possession of the powerful von Wettin dynasty, had its origins as an eastern march of the Holy Roman Empire in the lands of the Sorbs and other Slavic people that were rapidly Germanized. The land, densely forested in its origins, has proved to be really fertile, and the mild climate, especially near the Elbe river, has allowed the Saxons living there to develop a Wine culture.

The Ore Mountains, separating the country from the Bohemian Crown, are rich in minerals, especially Silver that fuels the economy of the County. However, its apparent richness is a double-edged sword, as the country is seen with greedy eyes by its neighbors, and they might try to conquer it. Despite the potential threats, Meissen thrives as a significant territory in Upper Saxony.

Over time, the von Wettin rule has further expanded Meissen’s influence and fortified it against external pressures. With its fertile lands, rich resources, and strategic location, it stands as a prominent entity in the Empire, attracting admiration and envy from its neighbors.

The County of Meissen is the one we recommend to get all the Saxony-related content, since it was the polity that ended up unifying the region of Upper Saxony:

As usual, take any UI, 2D and 3D art as WIP.

Here are the lands of Meissen, and its neighboring country, Landsberg:
Meissen.jpg

Meissen starts with a semi-unique Government Reform that only a few countries in the HRE have:
Margraviate.jpg

And a couple of Estate Privileges for countries of German culture:
Right to Inherit.jpg

Magdeburg Rights.jpg

And a unique policy is available to German countries, as well:
Bergordnung.jpg

And a very important work of art:

Sachsenspiegel2.jpg

And here some of the unique advances available for Meissen/Saxony, for different ages:
Advance Meissen Lion.jpg

Advance Meissen Groschen.jpg

Advance Saxon Court.jpg

Advance Furstenschule.jpg

Advance Meissner Porcelain.jpg

Let’s now take a look at some of the events available to Meissen.

Early on, this event will pop up:
The Acquisition of Landsberg.jpg

The land belong with us.jpg

Which will lead to this result:
Grossen Meissen.jpg

This event may also pop up:
A Gift from the Emperor.jpg

The second option is an alt-historical interesting one:
Meissner Groschen.jpg

We also have some late-game events, which are very fitting for a Saxony playthrough:
Johann Sebastian Bach.jpg

Or:
The Zwinger.jpg

Building Zwinger.jpg

Last, but not least, there's the possibility of unifying the Saxonian region into a proper tag:
Form Saxony.jpg

… And much more, but that’s all for today! Next week will be another intense week, since on Monday we will be taking a look at the Tinto Maps Feedback review of Western Africa; on Wednesday the Tinto Talks will be devoted to the Catholic religion and the Catholic Church IO; and on Thursday there will be new Tinto Flavour, about the Papal States (since next Friday it might be a somewhat important date for Christians, and a bank holiday in Spain). Cheers!

You have to convince the Emperor to give you the Electorship. It's easier if one the electorates disappears, of course, but you can also wait/vote for the Electorships to be expanded.
Considering how the golden bull hasn't passed yet, is it possible to influence who ends up being the electors? Such as getting a different saxony, bavaria getting the electorate instead of the palatinate or Austria snatching it from Bohemia? All of those seem perfectly plausible depending on who would be emperor when the golden bull passes.

  • Like the flag being framed to give separation if it continues on the background
  • Still look like a guy standing in front of a picture instead of in the room. Now he also has a painting of a flag with him.
  • I think this would work better if you stack the data on the left (Country name, country icons, flag, leader name, leader icons/stats) and the image on the right (change from landscape to portrait and size it to fit the model). This way you don't need to hide part of the image or model.

  • I don't like what I assume is a Farmland map icon. I just feel that these details would be left off and the maps of this style typically would have the parts that were different than the flat grass or farm lands.
  • Don't like how it looks like it was colored in by a kid with the pen hesitation marks in the borders and the country colors crossing the lines.
Meissen.jpg

  • Does modifiers need a title?
  • I still say that 'towards' is better that 'to'
  • The icon modifier for 'progress to' still makes it look like it is moving away from the base icon instead of towards the dot
  • The oblique angle of the gear in Army Maintenance doesn't match the direct view of all the other icon modifiers (and bases)
  • I do like the subtle border added to the internal groupings in this and other tooltips
Margraviate.jpg

  • What does the dotted list indicate? Is this a limit on the Trade Capacity?
  • Why is the last item in the dotted list blue?
  • Did we move the start of the game or is these now marked as starting 4 years before the start?
  • If the implementation date is the point at when it reached 100% status do we have to list that it is also at 100% if the date is shown?
Magdeburg%20Rights.jpg

  • Get rid of the first line by adding the 'type' to the sub title like in unit type, "Policy | Mining Law"
  • If the 'when implemented:' is an empty set don't show it (title or list of 'None.')
Bergordnung.jpg

  • Don't need the Age line as we have the Age icon
  • I am not sold on the 'output' icon modifier of the crate with a green plus. I think as the crate was meant as production I wonder if that is all that is needed. <Porcelain> Base with <Production(crate)> modifier --> Porcelain production (or output). Value indicating if it is an increase or decrease.

  • Two guys photoshopped into a soft focus painting. Dude, we were really there. Here's the proof.
  • Because of the need to show all the pertinent data of the meeples, half of the meeple is covered.
  • I do enjoy the slight reduction of font size (and possibly weight) to go with the italics to better indicate the fluffy bits. Can this be moved to the tooltips also (with the border and filigrees in the corners)
A%20Gift%20from%20the%20Emperor.jpg

  • Can we list the effects of the modifier in the 'event option' tooltip instead of forcing into anther tooltip to figure out what it is? Economy of actions.
Meissner%20Groschen.jpg

  • I do enjoy the reduction of the clutter of the pop-type line but I think it would work better with the following. This still keeps it as one line while removing the clutter and unifying the look with other tooltips.
    • Add the age icon to the title bar like we do with the advancements
    • Revert the banners to text and place them as part of the subtitle "Building Type | Government" like we do with Unit Types
    • place the 'build restrictions' group after the Pop type section.
  • Benefits section
    • The bordering implies that the location benefits title is 'sub' of the If in the capital, country benefits title. If this is the case be more specific.
    • I would go with the main title in the section as 'If in the Capital', with subs of 'Country Benefits' and 'Location Benefits'. I would have sections for the other land groupings but only show the ones that are pertinent. I think centering the subs or further indentation might give better clarity.
    • Do any capital (or market) restricted building have effects while not in the restricted location? If they don't I would drop the 'If' clause and have a prominent line at the start that states 'This building has no effects if not located in _________' and then we could shift the 'county' and 'location' back up one.
  • Why did we move away from the goods tokens? If we stay with these removed the block background of the number so it appears on the 'parchment' that the goods icon is located.
  • Why are we still using the list for Construction and not following what we are doing with the production method?
  • Do we still have to pay the production method if we are not in a capital and aren't getting benefits?
Building%20Zwinger.jpg

  • Get rid of Tier line and add it to the subtitle "Formable Country | Tier I" like unit type tooltips
  • Why do we nave to list the failures twice?
  • Why are we moving away from the requirement tree?

Is it possible to repeat what historically happened to the electorship? After the rulers of Saxe-Wittenberg died out in 1422 the emperor seized the territory as a vacant Imperial Fiefdom. The rulers of Saxe-Lauenburg and Meissen then both petitioned the emperor for the lands, and the associated Electoral title with the latter being granted it as a reward for their help in the Hussite Wars. Since the title of elector seems to have been tied specifically to the lands of Saxe-Wittenberg I'd propose that this is reflected in the game.

If a non-elector with their capital in the Saxony area takes control of the lands of Saxe-Wittenberg they should get the ability to petition the emperor specifically to take over the accompanying electorship rather than the emperor "randomly" assigning it to some prince. Additionally, if the ruler of Saxe-Wittenberg dies without an heir, the emperor seizes the lands and the other Saxon tags can petition him for those lands and the electorship, perhaps in return for something like aid in a war or some other favour.

I understand that this is not quite on the topic of Saxony, but please consider other options for the colors of the HRE states on the map, too many shades of blue and green...

I dislike talking about things not of a TT in a TT.

I would suggest is that
  • Prince-Electors and Imperial Prince should have the same base color with the Elector being the bolder color
  • Archbishop-Electors and Imperial Prelates should have the same base color with the Elector being the bolder color
  • As there is a mechanical difference I would have Imperial land not owned by an HRE member inside Germany have a different coloration than outside. Maybe have a 'Germany' border indicated on the map

Let's not call .5% trade efficiency "interesting alt history". At best it's a joke and at worst insulting to treat a make more money modifier like it'll actually change the course of the game. I realize we can't see the second effect of the event option, but trading out one modifier for another over the exact same playthrough is not interesting alt history.

Its pretty cheap to buy a a whole county bigger than your own county, i was expecting like 50 years of Landsberg profit to be the minimum, putting Meissen in debt for the next decade.

What exactly does the "founding town cost" modifier represent? Is it available to all cultures? Will we be able to dynamically modify the territories on the map by founding a new town?
It probably means the cost of turning a rural settlement location into a town location, similar to how it works in Imperator. They’ve talked about this before

Will there be unique background art added to flavour and generic events? They seem quite bland currently with only landscape backgrounds. I really liked EU4 vannila event art and especially a mod for EU4 called "The Great Exhibition."

"Indeed, the land is very fertile, with chernozem (the best type of soil, and quite rare in Western or Central Europe), but without the harsher climate conditions of Eastern Europe. So why isn’t there more farming terrain represented there (as we can see from German feedback) to reflect that?

Also, I’m a bit surprised there’s no event about gaining the Electorate, the union with Thuringia, or the struggles with dynastic law. These were major challenges for the Wettins in trying to consolidate power. The Albertine branch, which eventually adoptedprimogeniture law, managed to build a more united and stronger duchy — but if that decision had been made a hundred years earlier, the Wettins could have established an even stronger position much earlier."
