Tinto Flavour #17 - 13th of May 2025 - Vijayanagar & Indian regional content

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Fridays Tuesdays & Fridays in which we take a look at the content of Europa Universalis V!

Today we will talk about three topics: the generic content available for most of the countries in India; the unique content of Vijyanagar; and other regional content available for other Indian countries. A meaty TF, so let’s start without further ado!

Let’s start by talking about the generic content available for Indian countries. There are some reforms, policies, and units that are available to most countries, like these:

Nayankara System.jpg

Poligar.jpg

Paik System.jpg

The Paik System unlocks three types of levies, depending on the age:

Early Paik.jpg

Paik.jpg

Late Paik.jpg

There are also Elephant units:
Elephant Cavalry.jpg

Elephant Auxiliary.jpg

And a building that produces Ivory from Elephants - For those of you not so tuned into the Tinto Maps series, we’re representing African elephants with the Ivory resource, and the Indian elephants with the Elephants resource, so it can be used for units (as Elephants), or for other economic purposes, by transforming it first into Ivory with this building:

Advances like:
Saqiyah.jpg

And a unique type of vassalage - The Samanta System, with 3 different subject types:
Samanta Feudalism.jpg

Samanta.jpg

Maha-Samanta.jpg

Pradana-Maha-Samanta.jpg

Finally, let’s take a look at the flavour naming of the states in the Hindu Indian countries:

Let’s now take a look at the unique flavour content of Vijayanagar, a country that in 1337 was leading the resistance against the Sultanate of Delhi in Southern India:

The newly founded Mahārājya of Vijayanagar stands strong after the momentous defeat of Delhian troops in the Deccan, with Mahārājā Harihara Sangama and his brother Crown Prince Bukka Raya Sangama leading the fight against the Muslim rulers of India.

Although the Vijayanagari rule has only recently been established, the current situation in the Deccan promises us a rapid rise to power if we can utilize our momentum correctly, as we can secure control over important trade routes between China and Europe, and profit from exporting valuable goods from our resource-rich lands.

Vijayanagar has a unique policy for the Administrative System law:
Vij Rajya.jpg

It also has unique advances, as usual:
Vij City of Victory.jpg

Vij Bunds.jpg

Vij Carnatic Music.jpg

And it also has several flavour events, such as:
Vij Prophecy of.jpg

Arirayavibhada.jpg

Administration of the Realm.jpg

Multilingual Court.jpg

Vij Astadiggajas.png

Another country with unique content is Orissa, which has a very interesting setup, with some countries as Samanta subjects:
Ori Country Selection.jpg

Orissa1.jpg

Ori Anka Year.jpg

Ori Elephants.jpg

Ori Elephants 2.jpg

Ori Odia.jpg

We also have unique content for countries such as Bengal, Bahmani, and Pandua. For example, in the first case, it starts as three independent countries, which in the case of unifying the region and forming the Sultanate of Bengal:
Bengal.jpg

Would get contents and events such as:
Pandua.jpg

Finally, we also have a bunch of content for other formable countries, that will work as ‘regional powers’ with unique content such as advances, etc. This is a list of these formables:
  • Deccan
  • Gujarat
  • Hindustan
  • Marathas
  • Mughals
  • Nepal
  • Punjab
  • Rajputana

…But since this Tinto Flavour is already long enough, you’ll have to find out about it when playing our game, as that’s all for today!

Remember that tomorrow there will be a Tinto Talks about Hinduism, Jainism & Sikhism; on Friday a Tinto Flavour about Delhi; and next Monday we will have the Tinto Maps Feedback for India. Cheers!

Is there going to be any flavor to represent the patronage of Jainism by many Hindu rulers, such as a Jain estate (like in EU4) if they comprise a high enough percentage of the population (maybe 0.5%)? Because, while they were not very politically active, many rulers did grant them special privileges, such as being exempt from Hindu laws. They were also a relevant force economically, because they were mostly concentrated in the middle and upper class. This could also work with the Zoroastrians in Gujarat.
Maybe to keep it more restricted, it could be locked to certain cultures, so Kannada, Marathi, + other South Indian cultures (i.e. where it was historically strong). And for the Zoroastrians, it could only be for Gujarati culture.
If the population number goes too low, there could be an event about whether to keep the estate or not.
We'll talk tomorrow about Jainism in the Tinto Talks!

We have them as pops in the setup, and there's a Portuguese event about them:

Looks awesome! One small note and a couple small questions

First the note, in the text where it says "they were facing prosecution", I think "persecution" would probably be a better word.

As for the questions, are they Miaphysite at game start? And is that event only for Portugal or would it fire for any other European Christian that conquered the area?

Replied to some more questions, pushed some more tweaks to the game, and I'll keep reading replies to my posts; tomorrow I'll be focused on the Tinto Talks for Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, see you!

Could you make a ruler bigger in the country view? And move him to the right? Now it looks kind of funny, because he is small in comparison to whole window

The flavour text for this nayankara system sounds weird to me, precisely the
second sentence. Maybe end the sentence after "care for them" first, and start a third sentence ? The transition "as well as to produce" feels weird too. For a non-english speaker, this feels very hard to read, even if it is correct.

India in EU4 is one of my favourite areas to play in, so i'm very excited about this.

One thing that confuses me.

Pandua?

What country is Pandua. I don't see it on the map. I see it is a province in the Bengal area, there is also a Pandya empire in southeast India. But the way it is worded it doesn't seem to be about Pandya empire, it seems to be intentionally meant to be Pandua. So what is Pandua?

He accidentally said country of Pandua, he meant the event related to the establishment of Hazrat Pandua, the capital of the Ilyas Shahi Bengal. I'm pretty sure it'll pop up once the 3 warring states (Saptagram, Sonargram and Gaur) are consolidated into a unified Bengal and the Bengal tag is formed.

That being said, is country formation possible if you're a subject? Like can I, the player, as Saptagram unify Bengal and form Bengal while remaining a vassal under Delhi if I wish to?

So the "infant" in infantry means... oh no
You have deduced the actual etymology. Congratulations!

N.B.: it refers to inexperience/youth/low-status in comparison to cavalrymen, rather than to literal children. Infantry are only ocasionally composed by the under-12 demographic.

Does Mewar have some unique content, since it seems (or I do believe) it is the most likely one to be used to form Rajputana and is well known from EU4 and exists at game start, although as a vassal of Delhi?

I know that not every nation can have flavour at game start, and I really think it's a good idea to focus on some of the formables and in-between formables because this was arguably the weakest point in eu4 India, in that the formables itself were a bit underwhelming relative to the experience leading to these formables. So definitely keep that in mind.

I do think Pandya empire, the 2 Sri Lanka tags and Maldives might end up being popular choices relative to similar tags in the area. Ma'bar (Madurai) and Hoysala probably too as they have potential to come on top when Vijayanagar fails as the regional powerhouse, and because they start as independent at game start. In my view, it is an area with a lot of potential. India is always fun in the EU series.

Just realized how the Samanta vassals would be exceptional for AI-behaviour immersion omfg.
- The EU4 tributary system of East and Southeast asia allowed for smaller kingdoms to exist and historical borders to be maintained for long ass timescales because tribuataries are un-annexable by their overlords and also protected by them making the AI less reluctant to attack if they don't share the same overlord.
- India lacked this. So by 1550 India was a 4/5 way blob and all small kingdoms vanished into obscurity, meanwhile Indonesia and SE asia looked somewhat... historical in most playthroughs.
- Samantas are basically just tributaries in that respect, except they go to war with you (which is better because in EU4 Ava is always weak af despite having so many subjects - all tributaries who don't do jackshit when you declare war on her).
- Mahasamantas are basically vassals in the sense of EU4 - annexable and integratable, while Pradhan mahasamantas are marches, unannexable but buffed and bonusy.
- If the AI regional powers incentivise making samantas out of the small kingdoms and dont really promote them to mahasamantas unless theres cultural and religious commongrounds, then the Indian map can look believable in every gameplay, whatever the outcome. It won't be 4 blobs, but dotted with many small kingdoms coexisting like in reality.
- That would be quite genius and allow playthroughs as small malabar kingdoms or counties in the himalayas quite fun. Stay a samanta of Vij/Del/Mug/Bah and play tall. Plus AI will behave better that way too.
