Tinto Flavour #18 - 16th of May 2025

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Tuesdays & Fridays in which we take a look at the content of Europa Universalis V!

Today, we will be taking a look at the flavour content for the Sultanate of Delhi, the most powerful Indian country in 1337 - but not without a few curveballs to tackle. Let’ start without further ado:

A series of swift and legendary conquests in the last century gave birth to our great Sultanate of Delhi. With territories under our jurisdiction that span from Deccan to the fertile fields of Lahore, none other has dared measure up to the prestige and status of our accomplishments.

However, it has become apparent that we have overextended our authority across such a big Sultanate that it is nowadays quite difficult to control. Our enemies are many, and they covet to undo our great heritage. To the east, our subjects in Bengal have started questioning their masters, while our southern territories have long disputed our hold over them. And the Hindu countries of Southern India may further entrench their resistance to our rule, led by the rising power of Vijayanagar.

We trust the guidance of Sultan Muhammad Tughlaq, whose watchful eye may safeguard our lands and prevent our downfall...

As usual, all UI, 2D and 3D are WIP.

The starting situation of Delhi. There’s a bug with the coloring of subjects of subjects, but Gaur has a subject itself, Taraf.

This is the starting Government setup content for Delhi, and other Indian Muslim Sultanates, as well:

Dharmic Dhimmi Communities.png

Protected Faith.png

The last one was already shown, but it’s super important for Delhi’s starting setup, as only 2% of its pops are Sunni, the state religion, as shown in the Country Selection screenshot.

Related to this, a tab that we usually don’t show, the Rebels one, as it’s also quite relevant to Delhi’s start:
Rebels.png

This is not final, but gives an idea that managing Delhi at the start may not be easy…

Delhi also starts with a Work of Art:
Qutb Minar.png

And here are some of its advances:
Advances Origin of Hindustani.png

Advances Indo-Persian Culture.png

Advances Turkic Conqueror Roots.png

Advances Reintegrate Provinces.png

Advances Afghan Nobility.png

Delhi’s advances are quite interesting - the country will need those modifiers…

But the most interesting for Delhi is its narrative content, because soon after the game starts, a situation will pop up, ‘The Fall of Delhi’:
Fall of Delhi1.png

Fall of Delhi2.png

Fall of Delhi3.png

Fall of Delhi4.png

Fall of Delhi5.png

Fall of Delhi6.png

Fall of Delhi Share of Power.png

Fall of Delhi Panel.png

So, when the situation is active, several events may trigger, which may influence the ‘Share of Power’ of the situation:
Fall of Delhi7.png

Fall of Delhi8.png

This modifier scales based on how many countries support the Opposing side.

This might end up being the situation some months after it starts, if the player is not careful enough:
Fall of Delhi9.png

The situation may last for years, even decades, creating a very challenging gameplay for Delhi, with even more events popping up:
The Mad Sultan.png

Habshi.png

Habshi2.png

The end requirements of the situation are the following, with different possibilities:
Fall of Delhi End Requirements.png

One of them is a disaster that may trigger to Delhi, making the situation even worst:
Dissolution of Delhi.png

Dissolution of Delhi2.png

Dissolution of Delhi3.png

While this disaster is active, some historical revolters may appear: the Bahmanis, Malwa, Gujarat, or Jaunpur. The player can choose to either keep playing as Delhi or to start playing with one of them.

Besides that, Delhi has dozens of other non-Situation, non-Disaster related events, such as:

Tughlaq Salves.png

Hisar e Firuza.png

… And much more, but that’s all for today! This will be the schedule for next week:
  • Monday -> Tinto Maps Feedback about India
  • Tuesday -> Tinto Flavour about Sweden, hosted by @Johan
  • Wednesday -> Tinto Talks about Unit Graphics, hosted by @SaintDaveUK
  • Thursday -> Second ‘Behind the Scenes’ video!
  • Friday -> Tinto Flavour about Muscovy/Russia
Cheers!

With the events surrounding Delhis ruler is there an abdicate button?

Also Delhi only 2% Sunni so does the conversion block privledge a good thing or would a player want to repeal it.

So conversion being blocked by priviledge means NO conversion will happen, or only conversion action from cabinet is blocked ?
None of those pops will be converted, but others might be. E.g.: Nobles.

Interesting that there is no governor mechanic for either Delhi or Indian sultanates, even though they were a common administration tactic for the entirety of the game’s time frame. We saw something along the lines of governors with the Timurids, but I don’t remember how that worked.
This was a thread I started a while ago talking about it: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...ies-like-daimyos-are-confirmed-to-be.1725461/

I don’t think you can properly represent Delhi or later Indian empires without a governor system. And it seems as though right now it’s hardcoded through the area system, but as I point out in the thread many later empires had governors that don’t follow the current area map. If regular vassals are off the table, then either some bespoke mechanic or a bbc could work.
Also are the Delhi sultanates rulers afghan or delhavi? I think making them afghan might be more accurate.

Is there content for the Mughals to emerge? Either through a formable for Delhi or someone else?
The Mughal Empire is a formable country, with its own unique content, as we commented in the Persia/Timur TF.

Still committed to the idea that the full name of the Sultanate should be Tughlaq Sultanate of Delhi. And I hope there's content for the Sayyid Revolt (maybe as part of the Timurid situation) the the establishment of the Sayyid Sultanate of Delhi and then eventually the Lodi revolt. There should be recurring theme of revolting governors, even Daulat Khan Lodi (governor of Punjab) invited Babur to attack the Delhi Sultanate which led to the formation of the Mughal Empire.

It doesn't have to be this rail-roady, but there should be a theme of recurrent revolts causing Delhi to switch hands (and the full name thus changing).

I'm glad that Delhi is a very hard start. AI Delhi should collapse 99% of the time, and I'm glad you guys decided to represent it that way. I do have some additional comments though:

1. Mewar had already achieved its independence by this point, as had most other Rajasthani countries.
2. Some content around the havoc caused in the aftermath of the Timurid Invasions would be nice. Events for the rise of the Khokhars and their conquest of much of Punjab, as well as Khizr Khan's overthrow of the Tughlaqs and his founding of the Sayyid dynasty would be great.
3. How come Delhi isn't the capital of the Sultanate?
4. You've added Jaunpur, Malwa, Gujarat, and the Bahmanis as revolters, but you've missed several other important historical revolters, like the Khandesh Sultanate and Langah Sultanate. A little more tag diversity in the aftermath of the collapse of Delhi would make the region's dynamic more interesting as well imo.
5. Some content around Ibn Battuta would be nice. I made a post about what some events for his travels through India could be some while ago (for reference: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...ons-please-add-your-own.1697485/post-29807340)
6. Some mechanics to represent the governors outside of just their revolts would be nice. I made some suggestions about it previously (https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/the-governors-office.1720106/) and others have as well.

Any event for the enstablishment of the Sayyd and Lodi dynasties?
We have events about the Lodi dynasty, yes:
Lodi.png

Also about the Sayyids, but they would normally only happen for AI since it requires them to be a subject of the Timurids.

this is one of the plans of the starting Sultan Muhammad. about a decade prior to the game starts he had this bright idea to relocate the capital from Delhi. IIRC he took the entire court and population of delhi and moved it to the capital.

This was to Daulatabad though (and the Daulatabad was no longer the capital after 1334 anyways). The capital displayed on the map is Sargadwari, I believe.

We don't have a generic mechanic for governors in the game. It's something that we've discussed internally, but it would imply a rework of several mechanics to have something that could be on par with the game systems (e.g., appointable provincial governors as in Imperator). So, to be clear, don't expect a mechanic for governors to be in the game when it's released; we want to set the expectations clearly regarding this.

That said, for some countries for which that system was super-important in the early game, we have created a scripted, super-simple version of them. Timurids can appoint family members as 'governors' (= subjects) in their provinces, while there's this generic action available in the Fall of Delhi situation, while it's active:

1) The background for the event "Stretching reins of power", y'know, the one where the mounted men, seems to have a wrong aspect ratio.

2) Could you develop a little further into the conversion block privileges? Historically there were many (forceful and voluntary) conversions during the Mughal period, I'd hate to see that, again like in euIV, you are forced to either not convert anyone ever, or to convert everyone like it's nothing. IDK how the Delhi sultanate handled this matter, but you should be able to affect conversion without straight up converting everyone.
