Tinto Maps #27 - 22nd of November 2024 - Oceania

Hello, and welcome to another Friday devoted to map worship! You may remember me, Pavía, from previous Tinto Maps, as @Roger Corominas has been dutifully taking care of the last 6 dev diaries. Now he’s focusing on some other tasks, and I’ll be in charge of the last 4, as it’s planned that the war Tinto Maps will be over by Christmas. This doesn’t mean that we will be done with the maps of Project Caesar, though - we will continue posting Tinto Maps Feedback posts in the next few months. And the next one will be a very much anticipated one - the Balkans, next week! But let’s focus now on today’s region: Oceania!

Countries
Countries.jpg

A bit different map today, as there are no regular countries in the entire region… All of them are Societies of Pops! Also, down to the right, that is not ‘Linear Atlantis’, but our ‘3D Material Testing Island’, where our (great) 3D artists test how the different combinations of terrains look in-game.

It may be relevant to repeat our guidelines for how to categorize countries and societies, by the way:

  • Settled Countries (State Societies)
    • Organized through States, which implies a public power holding:
      • Monopoly of violence
      • Tax collection
      • Public works
      • Writing/record-keeping systems
  • Societies of Pops (Stateless Societies)
    • Societies lacking a State properly, but that have some complex organizational features, such as (not necessarily all, but some):
      • Chiefdomly authority
      • Permanent settlements
      • Agricultural development
      • Some kind of taxation
  • Non-Tag Cultures (Bands/Kin Groups)
    • Simple societies, usually hunter-gatherers or shifting agriculturalists, don't organize around power structures, but through horizontal ones
    • Their pops won't be part of any type of tag, akin to EU4 natives

There are a few Societies of Pops in Oceania, in three main hubs: Hawaii, Fiji-Samoa-Tonga, and New Zealand. We’d be interested in listening to your feedback on this matter, nonetheless.

Plenty of different maps today, to be able to show as many different regions as possible. This is very highly WIP, and some of the islands may end up dying because of their size and being unimportant. By the way, you may notice that some of the islands are weirdly rounded up - that’s because they have a different type of terrain, ‘Atoll’, which is the last one that we were able to add to the game in due time during the development process.

Now you may fully notice the purpose of Terrain Testing Island!

Development

Not a very developed region in 1337…

Natural Harbors

There are some very good natural harbors in the region, including a very infamous one in O’ahu…

Cultures

Tons of different cultures today!

Languages

Papua is not the most homogeneous place in the world, language-related…

Religions

As mentioned last week, we’ve split Animism into several ‘cultural confessions’, which we want now to recombine into broader families; so, again, any suggestions are welcome!

Resources are, in general terms, quite basic, food-oriented ones; although Australia is more varied, obviously, and there are some areas very rich in Pearls.

Markets

Ternate is the main market of the western part of the region, although you may notice that there’s very little access in most of the locations.

Population
There are some issues with the Population distribution map of the region this week, but I’m letting you know that the total population is 1.885M.

And that is all for today! If you want a more detailed map of a given area, just let me know, as I’m aware that the scale of the region shown doesn’t fit well with the usual format of Tinto Maps.

Next week we will take a look at the last continent remaining, starting with the region of North America. See you!

We're thinking of ways to be able to move raw materials around...
The ability to grow old world crops in the New World (and to a lesser degree vice-versa) seems pretty crucial to representing the economy of the period and the motivation behind the colonization of i.e. Brazil or Caribbean islands, hope we get to see it represented!

We have plenty of ideas, but the feasibility of them is very low at this stage, to be brutally honest. We'll confirm it in due time, but we prefer to be honest with the community, and not create non-realistic expectations.
Unless there will be an option for later start dates, I think it would be useful to have an option to play as a SoP that is going to form a centralised nation in the earlier portion of the game via an event, even if it the gameplay until then is going to be extremely boring and basically just fast forwarding. Otherwise one could be forced to play as a nation that gets this event (presumably in the same region) and potentially mess up the region by playing too good or too bad.

Given the number of locations that have minimal market access in this region, it's made me wonder; What does a market access of 0 mean in practise? Are those locations unable to buy from or sell to their market?

basically yes..

If I could offer a suggestion, I believe you mentioned that pops don't demand goods they don't know about, couldn't you use that system of discovered goods to change a location rgo once its owned by a country that has discovered its 'prefered' rgo (which could be present from the start)?. There could be some kind of timer for the change, so it doesn't flip instantly.
RGOs changing following the columbian exchange does seem prety important though.

Bit disappointed about lack of population. I've been doing some research and been in contact with some academics in the field of the Maori settlement of New Zealand, what the population numbers might be like across different areas and was looking forward to see if your maps needed critiquing.
Please post them anyway! That we've got some problems with our tool right now doesn't mean that we won't be able to make use of them later on.

intersting to see that you broke up the location of where Melbourne is today into not just two locations but two separate provinces too...
Will some of the resources change to wool after European colonisation? The sheep industry is very important to both Australia and New Zealand.
also the name "Geelong" stands out from the rest of the locations as being the only one (that I saw) that uses it english name, according to Wiki the aboriginal name was "Djilang".
Also why no society of pops in all of Australia? You have seemingly left an entire continent without anything going on

As of now, yes, but we might have to make them an island wasteland in the map review, as being too small in size.
The Bandas are incredibly historically important as the only source of nutmeg and mace. Why not just slightly exaggerate the size of the islands?

Project Ceasar in general seems really reluctant to do it, when it has been the standard for Paradox games for many important island provinces - it would be odd for Hearts of Iron to not include Okinawa or Iwo Jima just because they're small!

If you do make any relevant changes would you make a comment mentioning it in said threads?
Very likely, although so far, we've just done some small tweaks here and there.

Tonga imo fits all the criteria for being a settled country except writing while rapa nui famously did have some kind of record keeping but when they started doing it is unknow. I hope you do considering atleast having 1 playable country in this region at launch.

Hey Paradox, fantastic to see some love given to the Pacific.

A few things to consider:

There should be no "Wild Game" on the South Island of New Zealand unless you count the Moa (a really big bird), which went extinct by 1445.

New Zealand had no wild game or predators; hence, some birds laid their eggs on the ground, and a few don't even fly.

You could add gold to Central Otago, which historically had a gold rush in the 1860s that fueled the southern cities. But it's probably best to just put lumber or fish.

You could add a natural harbour to Christchurch or Dunedin - this is why these cities are where they are today.

Hope the above helps.
I assume Wild Game is a reference to the moa, but it does seem that by the time any player would realistically control this territory, the moa would be extinct. Maybe an event changing the good sometime between 1400 and 1600?

Likewise, I think Australian Livestock provinces ought to produce Wild Game instead, maybe pending an event about the introduction of animal husbandry to the continent.

Christchurch and especially Dunedin definitely need natural harbors. Dunedin's Otago Harbour is very good and historically significant.

What about the tier below SoPs? Are their features more or less defined?
We have some ideas, but before tackling those, we would need to make the SoPs fully playable.

No, but we check the existing ones from time to time regarding new feedback.
Can we at least get some updates on those from time to time if new feedback is implemented? I.e. I saw on the harbours map that the Genoa location had clearly been split (presumably with Savona added, as I and many others argued for), so it would be cool to see those changes
