Tinto Talks #13 - 22nd of May 2024

Welcome to another Tinto Talks, where we give out top-secret information about our upcoming unannounced game with the code name Project Caesar. This time we will touch a little bit on the aspect of religion in this game.

Every country, pop, or character has a religion they adhere to. This impacts their relationship with the place they currently are, and their relationship with others in the world.

This is the religious setup of Aragon in 1337.

Every religion in Project Caesar belongs to a Religion Group, such as Christianity or Paganism. Fellow religions in the same group consider each other to be merely Heretic, whereas religions in different groups condemn each other as Heathen.

Every religion has a specific view of other religions as well, that ranges from Kindred to Enemy, which impacts relations between countries of different faiths, and how populations of another faith view your country.

Each country also has their own tolerance of their true faith, of heretics, and of heathens, which impacts how happy or angry the population will be depending on which country they belong to.

The Same Religion here, is from the law relating to valid heirs.

The religious unity of your country has a really large impact on the satisfaction of your Clergy Estate.

Important to know is that in Project Caesar, you just do not send missionaries to your locations and eventually they have changed religion. Here conversion is a slower process, which relies on government activities and infrastructure.

A unique building for Muslim countries that has a tiny impact on conversion.

Each religion belongs to a group, which impacts which tolerance is applied and how religions interact with each other. Religions in the same group are viewed as heretics, but those of another group as heathens.

The groups we currently have are, but that may change as we continue to develop the game.
  • Christian
  • Muslim
  • Eastern
  • Dharmic
  • Zoroastrian
  • Manichean
  • Judean
  • Andean
  • Pagan

The current Christian religions. Take into account that they are very much WIP!

In some games we have made there have not been any major differences between religions, merely being different modifiers, and while some religions in Project Caesar are still only a few modifiers, many will have mechanics. Right now, we have made unique mechanics for Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Miaphysitism, the various Protestants, Muslims, Buddhists, Shinto, Nahuatl, Hinduism & the Inti religion. Each of these will get their own unique later development diary.

Now every religion will still have some modifiers that describe them, in many cases it is things that enable or disable certain mechanics. Some examples include the fact that countries with Jain as their state religion can not start wars without a casus belli, and that Calvinist countries will never reroll the dice in a battle, as everything is preordained.

Stay tuned for next week, where we talk about another completely new feature that adds flavor to the game.

Sadly, I can’t reply today, as I am at some management thingie in Stockholm, but @Pavía will help you out!

In 1596 in the city of Brasta the union between Orthodox and Catholic churches was declared, so came the unites church.
From what I remember, unia of Berestia was effectively transfering Orthodox churches under the Catholic hierarchy, while retaining some rites

I think it can be abatracted somehow by increasing tolerance to a heretical faith within your country

Edit: Well, reading into my own commentary actually makes me realise it was a bad representation. My proposal would leave them Orthodox, which is incorrect. Ideally, of course, would have Unia Christianity as possible to spawn in Catholic countries with big number of Orthodox pops

I hope there's some distinction within animism cuz it varied widely. Yoruba animism is radically different from Hausa or dogon animism. I really hope paradox doesn't make Africa feel monolithic in this game like eu4 does
There will be more religion variety and mechanics as we add more content

There were a few Norse pops in 1337, and therefore in the setup, but currently is one of those WIP religions only with modifiers, as there are others considered a higher priority at the moment.
- There are 13th century runic inscriptions from the merchant town of Bergen in Norway that show little Christian influence, and one of them appeals to a Valkyrie. Schön 2004, 173

- Although Sweden was """officially Christianized""" by the 12th century, it is common knowledge that the Norwegian king Sigurd "the Crusader" undertook a crusade against Småland, the south-eastern part of the Swedish kingdom, in the early 12th century, and officially it was in order to convert the locals.

- Archaeological excavations of burial sites on the island of Lovön near modern-day Stockholm have shown that the actual Christianization of the people was very slow and took at least 150 to 200 years after the official adoption of Christianity.
Schön 2004, 172

- On the Swedish island of Gotland a Gotlandic law book known as the Gutalagen was officially in use from the 1220s until 1595. Still, in practice it remained in use until 1645. This law book stated that the performance of blóts was punishable by a fine. https://www.guteinfo.com/?id=1957&meny=gutalagen

- Then there's
Trollkyrka, with indications that pre-christian ritual practices persisted here as late as the period 1604–1735.

Some of these are before 1337, though I can imagine one could argue that not all would be converted a mere 100 years later. So a smattering of Germanic pagan followers in Scandinavia in 1337 conservatively ranging in some areas between 5%-15% of the population would make sense imho.

Andean religions are listed as a separate group, but on the map in the Andes we can see just the same red as the Animist religion.
This made me think the map is very wip.

Also can anyone tell me what the random dot of animism is in northeastern canada ? What makes them different from the other people there ?

While the dice roll meme is funny, I hope it is not really a thing in the release game. It has no theological basis in reality of either calvinist or protestaants and it is a completely wrong understanding of the predestination issue. (Catholics believe in predestination as much as Calvinist, just not double predestination).

I really don't like the idea of a single animist faith, it's an as ahistorical oversimplification that I don't think should exist. I think CK3 has the perfect representation of pagans, although it may be a bit too complex for Project Caesar. I hope that animism is changed to be multiple different religions, instead of a unified umbrella term.

Also it's odd that the Armenian Apostolic Church isn't in the game, I would have assumed that they would have been finally separated from Coptic.
+1 for Armenian Apostolic Christianity

1. Is it possible for us to mod our own unique mechanics or only make use of the existing ones for new religions?
2. Will there be different types of Paganism or all are under same Paganism, like EU4 has Animism for example? (Never mind, the map sort of answers it)
3. Is it possible for playesr in-game to change how we view different religions from Kindred to Enemy or is it set just like how Heretics and Heathens are set?
1. Yes.
2. That's the plan.
3. No, it's set.

The Tinto Talks to date have shown that this will not be just an alternative title to EU4 but a genuine improved game.

Will there be a Tinto Talk about colonization and if yes when please ? I have a couple of questions about colonization.
