This isn't really a chess program, but http://www.kongregate.com/games/TheGrandestine/chess-evolved-online is a fun flash chess-like game where you can collect different pieces than the regular chess set up and can customize your board.
Thanks, but that doesn't sound like fun at all. ;) I just need a half-decent chess program I can play offline - I need the practice. Obviously I can just search for one, but from experience they're not always great - and I thought this would be a good place to ask for a recommendation.

Haven't played at all for a few years, but I'll be on the road soon, so expect soon to be playing insanely good Indians, Russians and Israelis on an almost daily basis.

Just realised I don't currently have a chess program on my pc. Any recommendations for Windows 8, please? Freeware, naturally.

I would be interested, but can't really commit to a tournament at the moment, as I'm going to off-grid at least some of the time.

I assume you mean offline programs where you play against the computer? Windows 7 came with Chess Titans which is pretty solid, and I think it can be downloaded for Windows 8. Try that one.

Thx.

Evening, people. I'd join, but only if MC tells me when this baby is starting. I'm going travelling tomorrow until Tuesday, you see.

Haven't really decided yet. I was thinking I could wait until the end of the weekend for signups, and that'd probably allow you to manage the round 1 game.

Also, because of the pairing method I'm going to use, it's possibly for players to skip a round or two if need be; it'll just make it a bit harder for you to win if you do. :)

Fair enough. Count me in!

I will tentatively join. Not much experience but it'll give me a decent yet fun workout hopefully. What time of day will matches be on? Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere.

I think there's going to be a pretty wide range of skill in this tournament, and MC is just setting up the pairings and keeping score, so it'll be up to the two opponents to find a time that works.

I'm a bit worried about timezones. Perhaps a correspondence chess kind of thing might be better, although I'll give this a shot.

I believe lichess has a tournament feature.

I would prefer to have 30 min matches.

Noted. I should probably make some sort of poll regarding time controls.

Correspondence would make this take forever. I think being able to knock out a game in one sitting is necessary to make it work.

Lichess does have a tournament feature, but it requires all players to be online at the same time, which I have serious doubts about. I think mutual agreement between players should be more workable than anything else.

If you have strong preferences on the time control we'll use, please let me know by PM or in-thread. I'm inclined to stick with 15|10 right now, but if lots of people indicate that 30 minutes is much better (or want something faster than 15|10) I'll at least consider it.

Also, signups will close and round 1 pairings will go out at 7 PM Sunday evening (Eastern US time). Players will have 72 hours to get their round 1 games in; if everyone gets it done faster then I may reduce it to 48 hours.

I'll be busy Sunday, but I might get it in Monday afternoon/evening. As for time, I generally play classic mode with each player getting 10 minutes, but I'm open to longer games.

Lichess calls 10|0 classical, but by most standards it's a very fast time control.

I definitely want increments in the game, if the game takes a lot of turns I don't want to be out of time for the couple of moves I really want to think hard about.
