I really hope they make that Cold War era game... if only so I can continue my mega-campaign. I just ended the nearly two-year journey from CK2 to the end of HoI4 (769–1951 in game years) and am feeling a bit sad.

You guys should give up asking for spoilers really. When did any dev spoiled or hinted at any new game before official announcement, even more so on the bigger pdx titles.
That aside, VIC would be the game I'd be most happy if a new one would be announced

The forums will rejoice once Vic3 is announced. Come release day, they’ll cry it’s featureless like IR and wonder why.

Spoken like a man who doesn't understand why Imperator was featureless...

My theory is that EUV won't be announced this year since, y'know, they're still working on DLC for EUIV. My guess is that EUV will be announced at PDXCON 2021.

Will they announce Vicky 3 at this years PDXCON? I hope so, but dunno. They may not announce anything big this year.

I believe this year they are going to announce EU5. Development of a grand strategy game takes several years, so the development of EU5 was well under way and the announcement and release planned for 2020-2021 when they decided to roll out one last big EU4 expansion in 2019. The expansion got delayed, but it didn't affect the development of EU5, because it's developed independently. So, the release of the new expansion and the announcement of the new game may even happen on the same day. It will probably even be good for EU5, because the expansion release will boost interest in the EU franchise as a whole.

no Vicky 3 since no one is going to shave his head this time :p

Why would they announce an expansion for a game on the very day they also announce the sequel to said game?

That would kill interest in the expansion and its corresponding game. Very, very dumb.

There has been no sign that EUIV's development would be ending this year, which the announcement of the sequel would signify. Hell, they even reinstated Johan as head of EUIV development, I doubt they'd do that if they were ending development of EUIV this year.

They'd likely put Johan on EUV and leave EUIV leaderless as they finish off the last major DLC (which was supposed to be finished last year, but was extended to this year implying that the DLC/Patch is almost done and thus no need for Johan).

They won't announce them at the same time, they might release the expansion and announce the new game at the same time (or closely to each other). Since the new game won't be out for 6-12 months after the announcement, everyone who is hyped for EU5 can do the next best thing and play the expansion.

In my opinion, EU4 doesn't have much room for growth at this point. Surely, if the dev team wants, they can make regional flavor pack or two, add a few more buttons to press and rebalance some things, but the core game structure is too restrictive to make real steps forward. Johan is probably there because EU4 is in a bad place right now (after several failed DLCs and badly received patches, departing of the head of development, delay of the next DLC). Under his leadership they might hope to end its development on a high note, because if the final, big and hyped DLC turned out to be a disappointment, that would have been really bad for the series reputation and sales of the sequel. Recent DDs show that Johan put a lot of ideas to the new patch/DLC, so it wasn't "almost done" when he returned as the game director (or it was until Johan came and decided to introduce a lot of changes).

Of course, all of it is wild speculation on my side and there's a good chance you are right and I'm being silly.

Considering how old it is and how long it has been since the last expansion, Victoria 2 really should be in the older games section of the forum but is still listed among current PDS games... Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but it gives me hope they’re keeping Vicky 2 in the current games section as a way of keeping the franchise visible *maybe* in anticipation of a not so distant future sequel...

Hope springs eternal anyways...

I certainly hope CK3 isn't at the end of its dev cycle, it isn't even out yet. But I take your point about CK2 + EU4 being at the end of their respective lifecycles. I will be surprised if at PDXCON 2020 they don't announce EU5, given its age.

#isitvicky3 is moreorless a meme at this point. I'm probably not going to make myself popular by saying this, but PDX is a much larger studio that it was 10 years ago. I presume that they can't take the risk of a game like that tanking; it certainly won't do nearly as well as CK3, EU5, HoI5 or Stellaris 2.

Probably stepped on a landmine by saying that.

funny thing you are paradoxically right and wrong at the same time.... now that they are big studio they could easily afford game of passion such as Vicky3, even if it tanked compared to mainstream titles.... but at the same time they won't do it, because they became corporation, which are mostly about profit. There is little to no place for passion there, despite PResque blah, blah, blah.

Not to mention that without King, there's no real designer with vision for the game, so even if they took the risk... the game wouldn't be what we wish for. Especially considering recent track record.

V2 has as many steam players as RomeImperator.

Lets hope V3 is made with complexity and depth, instead of a paintthemapesque stlye

Ironically v2 has far simpler and cruder mechanics than imperator.

I coded both.. the politics/pop system for v2 is something that i wrote in a week..

Hi johan

From the gamer pov v2 pops are awesome.
Why not spend another week to implement a pop system in I:R then?
12 pop type, plus religion, plus culture and real numbers, so 1000 slaves are 1000 slaves...
Those farmers who leave their land to join the army before the harvesting...

Idk Johan, if you did so well in V2, think about it and develop such a "simple" system in I:R. Sometimes a simple mechanics leads to a complex situation.

Anyway, thanks for the time in the forum!

roman era didnt have such diverse strata as 12. there really was only the slave class, workerclass, priesthood, nobles. maybe forigners, merchants could be added

johan. why not try a different release approach to vicky3 since it doesnt have ahuge following. release alpha as early access. slowly tik on followers and have bigger updates 3times a year for streamers and youtubers. v3 really should just focus on europe first version could be barebone of the major 8. start with modsupport and allow fans to add stuff to game. you could nicely ask along the course if you could incorporate the mods into maingame with tweaks if you give the modders thanks in credits. or make mod dlc bundles rewarding them with 0.2€ dlc packs

Well, Vic2’s POP system is simply amazing and adds so much depth to the game. Also it makes the map feel alive, which is what makes Vic2 so special and different from other Paradox games. There are actually people living on the provinces. In EU4 the dev system feels so empty and unorganic.

I think all of your games should have the POP system as a base.
