CK3: Tours and Tournaments - The Vision

Greetings!

Come one, come all! The grand tournament awaits your attendance - your steeds have been readied and your entourage assembled for the journey ahead! It’s time to show the world your graciousness as host and worth in the arena… but to get there, we’re better off routing our journey around the treacherous mountain passes of Stipon, as I hear they’ve been crawling with highwaymen since your, ahem, dalliance with Duke Andronikos’ wife during his son's wedding. Then there’s the matter of your unruly vassals: perhaps it’s time for a royal tour?

The life of a ruler was always active - there were many things to attend to, and most courts at the time were itinerant, roaming from place to place constantly. Tours and Tournaments aims to give rulers plenty of things to do, especially during times of peace, by introducing new systems of Travel and Grand Activities!

As mentioned in the Floorplan Dev Diary, we want to reinforce the connection between character and map - after all, the game is played on a beautiful medieval map, and no longer will the only time your ruler leaves the safety of their capital be when you’re at war. There’s an entire world out there to explore, filled with both great opportunities and adventurous obstacles.

By assembling an entourage, selecting options for your travel, and hiring a caravan master, you are ready to set out on the road and travel to activities across the world. The Travel system is an integral part of activities, with both the host and guests traveling to reach them - creating a stronger feeling of place as you see your route being plotted and your character moving directly on the map.

So what are these activities you can travel to, you ask? There’s plenty - firstly we’ve updated and revamped Feasts, Hunts, and Pilgrimages completely - the bread-and-butter of activities. There’s now a reason to hunt in a specific forest within your domain, as a ferocious wolf or legendary stag might have been spotted there - or a reason to hold a feast in a holding with leisure palaces, as you might need to impress a particularly unruly vassal. Pilgrimages will now be epic journeys, potentially taking years if you’re going far - making it necessary for a regent to rule in your stead. All activities have dedicated interfaces with easily-accessible information and beautiful art to set the scene.

Of course, there are Grand activities that are even more impactful - each of them different in their own magnificent way! They have Options and Intents which affect rewards and what type of content you might encounter. Our aim is to make each activity have a clear purpose and be interesting in its own right, therefore we chose to make Grand Tournaments, Grand Tours, and Grand Weddings - three vastly different activities with vastly different executions and purposes!

Grand Tournaments are where you go to test your mettle: spectacles to be announced far and wide, with rewards ranging from precious trinkets to fabulous prizes! Grand Tournaments aren’t only for martially-inclined characters - while there are contests such as melees and jousts, there are also more cerebral ones such as recitals or erudite board games. You can join your knights in slippery wrestling, eagle-eyed archery, dangerous horse racing, and vicious team melees - all clad in gleaming armor brandishing your coat of arms for the masses to see! Participating and winning in these contests will see your characters and knights grow in skill and receive prizes; living the life of a frequent tournament-goer is a valid path to take. Exploring the tournament Locale and choosing the right Intents might help you out in other ways as well, be it finding friends or dispatching rivals. If you’re in need of renown, hosting tournaments yourself will grow your standing significantly, as rulers from foreign realms come flocking to the fateful grounds, eager to compete!

Grand Tours see you assemble your entire court and set out to visit vassals in your realm - an activity commonly undertaken by medieval rulers. This is a way to assert your overlordship, while also enjoying the hospitality your vassals have to offer. There are various paths to take: Intimidation, Majesty, or Taxation, all affecting the rewards and opinions of your vassals. At its core, Tours are a tool for realm stability - and something a newly-ascended ruler should undertake quite early to avoid factions and revolts. You also get to choose between ways of approaching your vassals individually; you might want to tour the grounds, observe a cultural festival, or simply have a private dinner hosted for you.

Grand Weddings allow you to marry above your station… if you’re willing to pay the cost! They also provide ample opportunity for diplomatic shenanigans, such as impressing neighboring rulers into becoming vassals, forming hard-to-get alliances, or creating favorable matches for your children. Of course, these spectacles come with everything you’d expect out of a medieval ceremony - revelries, drama, and even a bedding ritual at the end. Or you can invite a group of mercenaries to color the halls crimson with the blood of the other House, should you desire it.

As some of you managed to cleverly figure out, there’s also a brand-new regency system where we’ve made sure that it’s both interesting to have and to be a regent. Loyal regents help you by dutifully fulfilling their Mandates, and being the regent of your liege gives you opportunities to (with varying degrees of bloodshed) seize the throne for yourself, should you be doing a “good” job.

There’s also a myriad of other changes which we’ll go into in future dev diaries - smaller systemic updates to buildings, knights, vassal opinions, and so on - all to support a more interesting and living map, where your choices matter more.

So take to the road, ruler - great opportunities await!

Tours and Tournaments will be released in late spring, and until the release we will have weekly Dev Diaries.

It all sounds cool but i think a feeling that is perpretating in the comunity is that the game is dead/in the process of dying or losing steam, which is weird since it seems like such a popular and beloved game ?
Lots of people have one particular (sometimes quite large) feature that they regard as so important that the game will assuredly die if it is not the next feature to be implemented.

Of course, they don't agree which feature that is.

Come on, do better my friend. Temujin had an entire harem but still had a wife. The Ottoman Sultans had tons of concubines but still had wives.

Edit:
And to further emphasize my point, in some cultures taking another concubine, a second wife, or adding a number of women to the harem was enough cause for a massive celebration full of festivals, drinking, and all sorts of “medieval” behaviors.

Do only european cultures have tournaments? If not, what will the tournament interface look like for other cultures?
Oh and is there still a dev diary tomorrow?
Sparring traditions exist in almost all cultures on earth. What's unique about European tournaments is the pageantry.

And another issue I have: This would have been the perfect first Major DLC. A fix in Role Playing without bolting an additional system on it. So I have one more reason to continue punching Royal Court verbally. Would such a system have been introduced in the first Major Pack it would have been received better then the royal court.

Right now it is berated over the players who want more mechanical and strategical depth. And as a player who states that such a depth is needed to perfectly role play it is a bit underwhelming.

Of course I want to see some Dev Diaries and I really, really hope that it also tackles relations with neighbouring and warring realms (and maybe some events around Holy Wars and GHWs, they really need it).

But yeah. I hope the next DLC is a techincal/strategical-depth one. Either governmental, religion or trade. CK3 desperately needs depth.

Yeah. Losing your title wouldn't be Game Over then. You could travel around the world, go to someone's court and persuade him to fight for you. Or gather 1000 poor people in the mountains, conquer some count and get married to his daughter who was betrothed to someone else.

This should have been in the game.
Or when your son is married to a female ruler and all the children are of your dynasty. Of course it should not be game over.
You should be able to bide your time conspiring behind the scenes to make certain your grandchildren inherits the throne.
But I would not want to start landless from the start.

Is anything about this Expansion going to fix the major lack of content post mid-game? Is the content unique enough that it fixes the game's repetitiveness? Those are the two main problems I have with the game and if the expansion doesn't fix them, I won't know what to think. I'm really not prepared to wait another year for an expansion.

True. But Royal Court DLC sales are telling us that "old fans" are small minority now. Many people enjoy Crusader Sims 3 type of content it seems.
It's a normal process when a company grows and goes mainstream. "Old school" GSG content will be less and less visible in their future games.
I think they are going for conscious differentiation between the franchises. EU and Vic are more about strategy and nations, CK is more about characters and their stories. They don´t want to make games with similar areas of focus with just different time frames.

If it's a part of the free patch, it makes sense that it's not included in the DLC description. This right here might be huge, if it is what I hope it is.

God - I'd love it if it was realm laws. It's something that - unlike a lot of other stuff - hasn't been "officially denied" in dev comment either, so it could be?

It's certainly true that we likely only know a fraction of the free patch stuff at this point. They need to sell the DLC - and so are promoting DLC features first and foremost.

While i don't know about tournaments, i definitely won't just take your word on that for the latter.

Weddings are such gigantic events in so many cultures to this day, that nobility a few centuries ago (in some of these still existing cultures) would not have cared a lot about weddings is absurd to me.
Normal, semi-wealthy people throw huge parties for that and invite everyone and their hamster in many parts of the world. I don't think all of that is colonialist influence. Especially, since the average person celebrates bigger weddings than was ever common in europe.

Are you telling me that my fully interactive and 3D modeled cat-grooming simulator is not an absolutely essential addition to the game

Ooph, lotta opinions flying around - I'm mostly gonna comment on the stuff that's relevant to what I've worked on most here.

I will say, for those who are disappointed that this wasn't about imperials, nomads, or republics, that we did announce that like ~6 months ago. Per the floorplan DD:
The theme is not one that has been the subject of an expansion in previous iterations of CK - to make things extra clear; we’re not doing trade, imperial/byzantine mechanics, nomads, or similar this time.
... which, as far as I recall, was part of how so many people started getting keen on regencies to begin with. Something never expanded in CK2. I won't tell you not to feel upset and I hope we can get at least some of you back with upcoming dev diaries, but we were honest about this months ago & have repeated it whenever prompted since.
I hoped for a good regency system like most of the players but it seems regency wont be a deep mechanic.
:) I think it's reasonably deep, for what it's worth. We certainly didn't go bare-bones with it, if you're concerned about that.

The system has potential, but due to it being a closed DLC system, it's never going to be developed meaningfully.
;) Struggles are not a DLC-locked system, they're part of the base title. The Iberian Struggle is part of Fate of Iberia, but the system is available for anyone (including us) to use in future.
Is the AI able to claim the throne as a regent or is that a player only function? Knowing the AI in the game every reagent you appoint will try and screw you over.
They are, and they've got some special logic for it to help them attempt it more readily. Couping your liege isn't easy stuff, though, even for the player, so by no means every AI is going to try this and of those who would, not very many are likely to get to a stage where they can. We aimed to have it be a potential goal for the player to work towards and something that the AI manages every now and then, rather than something you see constantly.

The circles representing the characters will move all accross the map in real time?
It does indeed - honestly I kinda love watching it. Sometimes I take longer routes just to see my character moving around the map more.
A question for the devs:

If I win a joust in the name of my sister, would I be able to romance her easier?
Umm. I would generally expect her to be creeped out if she takes it as romantic love. Though I guess that depends on the sister.

Per se. Weddings only gained relevancy in Colonial times. In the medieval times, even alliance weddings between Kindgoms and Empires were rare.

The Byzantine Emperor didn't wed every daughter to a catholic king. But there were always connections to neighboring realms to a certain degree. Like Byzantine Noblewomen getting wed to Khazars or other neighbors to keep the peace (not the daughters of the Emperor per se). Also many Emperors of the ERE preferred wedding a local noblewoman before a foreign princess and had more regional wedding events. There was the action with Constantine VII where there was an uproar when the Bulgarians Daughter was betrothed to him.

More important were funerals and coronations. At funerals sometimes were conflict were resolved or started and coronation and throne ascendance festivities were celebrated in various degrees in nearly every realm at the medieval times.

Another thing from the Steam page:

  • Gain an edge in backroom diplomacy by organizing a Grand Wedding. Negotiate beneficial prenuptial Pacts, please your Courtly vassals, and gain favors at these new intricate ceremonies.

Interesting. This could be another thing people have been asking for - the ability for "marriage" not to necessarily mean "alliance"

Royal Court has been out for a year, and neither Fate of Iberia or Friends and Foes used it at all.
One of the devs previously explained that the FoI development was too far advanced by the time RC was nearing completion to be able to incorporate the RC mechanics/systems. If I find the post I’ll edit it in.

I think finding time to add more content to one of the older systems is better done in the Flavour Packs, but with parallel development it is also difficult to do. Take Fate of Iberia and the Royal Court. They were released about 3-4 months apart, and that is not a lot of time for Fate of Iberia to adapt the features we added later in the development of RoCo. I cannot remember quite when FoI got access to all the stable features of RoCo, but adding content that uses the RoCo features would need to have time to implement, test and verify that it would all work.

I've wanted more peacetime content, more things to spend my gold on, more realistic mechanics for travel. In that regard my expectations are met. Regencies are also not unexpected at this point.

I just wish coronations were part of it. And that there was a release date.
Its dependent on what they consider spring, because i live in Norway their neighbouring country & spring would be march-end of may. So we we go by that, late spring would be May. Summer holidays starts in june so they really should not release in june due to update/bug requirements after a release.

Maybe it's not for me or you, but for each "old fan" there is 10 new PDX fans that will enjoy it.
Except I am a new fan. Started playing CK3 in 2021 and have 1400 hours played. Played CK2 in 2022 and I can see the difference between the two. CK2 is indeed a Grand Strategy game where you RP as a ruler. CK3 is an RP game where the decisions are non-impactful and there’s very little politics, diplomacy or strategy.

They did care =/= They travelled miles and miles just to assist to the wedding of a fellow vassal or worse, the king travelling miles and miles to assist to the wedding of a vassal.
