The first missile hits. No point defense fire.

Note the change in spacing of the missiles as the approach the planet, the bus dumps out the warheads, and the warheads streak off at 50,000 kps.

What is the PD range? Is it possible you could let the gunships have some fun taking it out?

If their PD range scales the same as their anti-ship range, it will be about 125,000 km.

... but it's EXTREMELY difficult to target individual ground units if you don't have a forward observer already on the ground. Orbital bombardment is a lot more accurate if you are supporting your own ground troops.

We can close in and try it out, though, sure. What's the worst that could happen?

Sounds fun :D

Potentially Dwarf Fortress style, obviously ;)

The door buster ship sounds like a good idea. Like the rocks, just more formal. Put some active sensors on it so it's really hard to miss, too

The train of missiles has all impacted. There was no PD fire.

I think Murat will just buzz the planet, to make sure.

If nobody shoots at him... send in the Space Marines!

Murat has closed within gun range of the enemy planet.

Obviously we can't actually hurt them from this far away, but we'll fire a shot or two at them just to make sure we have their attention.

Murat mounts the World's Biggest Laser (53 points of damage at point blank) but at this extreme range it does crap for damage even if it somehow scores a hit.

Yeah, he misses (a 2% hit chance) at the extreme range of 310,000 km from the planet.

One thing to note:

I'm only 10,000 km inside my extreme range limit, and already I'd be doing 8 points of damage if I could somehow score a hit. This Laser is brutal.

Marat is now only 130,000 km from the planet - they opened fire at a range of 595,000 km against RobbieAB's Spy, remember - and still no incoming fire.

He's waiting 45 seconds or so for his HUGE WEAPON to recharge... the wait between shots is ALSO brutal.

Yeah... even after closing in to 130,000 km (about 40% range) my to-hit chance is terrible.

Orbital Bombardment seems pretty useless unless you have a forward observer on the ground, in contact with the enemy.

Nice to test it and find out, though. Missiles seem to be the bombardment weapon of choice. We had no trouble scoring hits with them.

... so Murat will just buzz the planet, instead. We'll scream past right over their heads, making rude gestures out the window.

We are now directly overhead... and no shots have been fired.

Send in the Marines!

We will drop one Division of troops and retain the other Division loaded, for conquering the other planets in the system.

The 1st Space Marine Division has received their orders to drop.

Marshal Murat stands by overhead as the Tugs approach, towing a whole Division's worth of drop-pod racks.

The troops are on the ground, and the tugs are headed for safety.

Jesus Christ.

Their hand weapons are as powerful as our anti-ship STO turrets, and their ATGMs are as powerful as our massive 45cm Spinal Laser.

These guys have endgame ground unit tech.

I'm glad we only dropped one Division, because we'll almost surely lose it. If we had dropped two, we would probably lose both.

How much damage can you do to their ground units with orbital bombardments? If they can’t hit your ships, you can presumably bombard them with missiles?
That's what I'm trying right now.

Our first strike reduced them from 10,700 tons to 6,100 tons (and knocked out their turrets).

Here's our second strike, which further reduced them to 4,600 tons.

Check out the super-unit... it mounts two weapons, each of which does 108 damage.

... our nukes do 9 damage, for comparison.

We could bring in some Terraformers, and turn their atmosphere into Chlorine gas... but that wouldn't hurt the ground units. Only the pops.

The Escort Force have also launched a Fighter strike, but with only 26 Fighters instead of Iche Bins' 78.

This reduced the enemy down to 3,900 tons.

I haven't yet seen any sign that our ground troops are inflicting damage. None at all.

I'm not sure they're even attacking... just defending.

We took down the Achernar with a one-squadron strike.

I'm sending out for more missiles.

Does anyone know how to make sure that my ground units are actually trading shots with the enemy instead of just defending?

I've got some set to defend, but most to attack.

Well, it's certainly a learning experience.

Funny that the strength 9 hits from the missiles make such a difference.

How many missiles did you bring?
