Tinto Talks #13 - 22nd of May 2024

Welcome to another Tinto Talks, where we give out top-secret information about our upcoming unannounced game with the code name Project Caesar. This time we will touch a little bit on the aspect of religion in this game.

Every country, pop, or character has a religion they adhere to. This impacts their relationship with the place they currently are, and their relationship with others in the world.

This is the religious setup of Aragon in 1337.

Every religion in Project Caesar belongs to a Religion Group, such as Christianity or Paganism. Fellow religions in the same group consider each other to be merely Heretic, whereas religions in different groups condemn each other as Heathen.

Every religion has a specific view of other religions as well, that ranges from Kindred to Enemy, which impacts relations between countries of different faiths, and how populations of another faith view your country.

Each country also has their own tolerance of their true faith, of heretics, and of heathens, which impacts how happy or angry the population will be depending on which country they belong to.

The Same Religion here, is from the law relating to valid heirs.

The religious unity of your country has a really large impact on the satisfaction of your Clergy Estate.

Important to know is that in Project Caesar, you just do not send missionaries to your locations and eventually they have changed religion. Here conversion is a slower process, which relies on government activities and infrastructure.

A unique building for Muslim countries that has a tiny impact on conversion.

Each religion belongs to a group, which impacts which tolerance is applied and how religions interact with each other. Religions in the same group are viewed as heretics, but those of another group as heathens.

The groups we currently have are, but that may change as we continue to develop the game.
  • Christian
  • Muslim
  • Eastern
  • Dharmic
  • Zoroastrian
  • Manichean
  • Judean
  • Andean
  • Pagan

The current Christian religions. Take into account that they are very much WIP!

In some games we have made there have not been any major differences between religions, merely being different modifiers, and while some religions in Project Caesar are still only a few modifiers, many will have mechanics. Right now, we have made unique mechanics for Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Miaphysitism, the various Protestants, Muslims, Buddhists, Shinto, Nahuatl, Hinduism & the Inti religion. Each of these will get their own unique later development diary.

Now every religion will still have some modifiers that describe them, in many cases it is things that enable or disable certain mechanics. Some examples include the fact that countries with Jain as their state religion can not start wars without a casus belli, and that Calvinist countries will never reroll the dice in a battle, as everything is preordained.

Stay tuned for next week, where we talk about another completely new feature that adds flavor to the game.

Sadly, I can’t reply today, as I am at some management thingie in Stockholm, but @Pavía will help you out!

have you seen the ck3 map?
Yeah I have seen it and have complained once or twice but I don't have the energy to keep complaining about it. Yet that doesn't mean I won't give feedback for when the time comes. Besides the current eu4 and the vic3 maps are not bad so it's not 100% guaranteed it's gonna be horrendous.

Will Anglican always arise in England or can it appear in other countries.

If so it could be cool for it to have localised names depending on where it appears. Perhaps Gallican if it appears in France or Episcopalian in Scotland etc?

I see the building has "conversion speed", but not to any specific religion. Does that mean that buildings that do religious conversion will only ever do so to the country's religion, or is it possible for a building to exist that is converting to a religion other than that of the state?
Logically it's to your state religion. What sense would it make to convert heretic/heathen pops to another heretic/heathen religion? Has there been an example of this anyway? I can't imagine the Spanish conquering Mexico and then convert the locals to Islam.

People are, rightfully, arguing for Anabaptists to be present.
I, on the other hand, am hoping for all the weird and wacky religious movements that came out of Britain, like Methodism and Quakers and Baptists to be included.
I am aware this is a big ask, for a bunch of religions that won't exist until roughly the last century of the game.

I'm fine if those only come out in a future DLC - if at all - but the idea of doing a Diggers world conquest is really appealing (and really funny) to me.

What about places where religion was still not really organized? In japan Confucianism, Budhism and Shintoism coexisted and both religions relied in each other in many things. Also it was a disorganized thing, not a estate as would be in Europe. Which religion would be the primary? And the Neo-Confucianism started to rise a bit later too but where applied to some social behaviors.
The Japanese main religion is Shintoism, but it includes some Buddhist features.

Yes and we will keep adding religions
Lovely to hear! The fact that Totemism seems to have split into 6-7 religions, I’m thrilled at what the final religion map for Africa will look like. Will lots of these former Totemist/Fetishist regional religions have shared mechanics? Like say, how in EU4 Norse and Hindu both use personal deities?

There's too much lumping together of pagan religions in my opinion.

I hope there's going to be Finnish paganism as it's own pagan religion, as that was a very unique belief system based on polytheism and a number of different deities representing different aspects of life and nature. People would worship the deity that they needed help from, for example Ahti for fishing luck and Tapio for hunting luck, Äkräs for the fertility of plantations.

In 1337, Finnish paganism still definitely existed inland in the Finnish region, and in northern East Karelia (below the Kola peninsula) it might even have been the majority religion in some places.
In my opinion this should be represented in Project Caesar, at least in a later update if not in release.

What about Chinese religion such as Daoism and arguably Confucianism? In EU4, Confucianism was a broad term for all religions in China and I feel like the Pop system could greatly showcase the rich religious landscape of China.
There will be mechanics for Confucianism and Daoism.

Is there any chance Religion names can overlap wasteland? It's very apparent with just about every location with sunni. I think it would look so much nicer to have a large "sunni" over the steppes connecting to persia, the Sahara, and Arabia, rather than how tightly squeezed and awkward they look now.
Agreed, having cultures/religions overlap wasteland was a very nice addition to CK3. Maybe it could be an option in the game settings if some people don't like it.

Will players be able to directly direct the path of a religion?? For example, if I control the papacy, can I decide to change certain aspects in a manner that changes the possible modifiers or laws of said religion, kinda how CK3 works?

Also, will religions add specific flavor and attributes to characters like your leader or others??
Some religions will be more dynamic, and some will be more static.
