This is essentially the macnamara fallacy: using engagement numbers of argue that the game's good. The game's popular becuase it finally broke into the normies market, and also because the market itself grew dramatically over the years, especially since the pandemic began.

By this logic some utter slop like call of duty or those god awfull assassins creed games are doing amazing because the player numbers are growing even if they would have still been growing if ubisoft instead was selling liquid shit. I mean according to the recent leaked subscription numbers for wow the number of players barely dipped over the course of Shadowlands, which, despite being an addon, was arguably the worst video game in the history of the human species. I mean, how amazing is that?!
Games that are actually "utter slop" generally don't have millions of people playing them... And they definitely don't spawn and maintain franchises with dozens of games. People aren't playing CoD because it's the latest viral game to hate play "for the memes"

Just because you don't like them doesn't mean that they are bad. I personally don't like MMOs, but that doesn't mean that WoW or that Final Fantasy one aren't competently made enjoyable experiences for many. The many failed games of all genres demonstrate that people won't just blindly play whatever is put in front of them.

That said, 27% saying no is rather surprising. I really would not have figured it to be that high - certainly haven't heard anything negative about that here. Maybe a lot of people just assumed characters would be like in I:R or CK? Or maybe this forum really is a bubble, lol.

It really depends on what you mean by characters. Does EU4 have characters? Technically yes, but character interaction is basically non-existent.

Does HoI4 have characters? Again, the answer is technically yes. However, I doubt many of those 27% are opposed to project Caesar having generals in some form.

I would expect it to be combination of people not wanting character interactions having anywhere near the impact the dev diary indicates we might get, and some opposition to character portraits in general. EU4 did fine without them (outside of advisors where they are rather pointless), and ideally I would see project Caesar designed in a way where they weren't needed. As soon as character interactions are an important part of the gameplay (which the are from the sound of it), some kind of portraits to make it easier to distinguish one character whos name people will have problems pronouncing from another.

Tbf this poll was made right after Id made a video about the characters DD and, while I clearly must be wrong, to me it's pretty obvious that the question refers to the 3D models
As someone who hit respectfully disagree to the dev diary for reasons unrelated to 3D models, I didn't even think of that as a possible interpretation of the question. I have however only seen the screenshot you posted here.

Exactly. Taste is subjective, and so really the only objective metric we have to decide whether a game is "good" or not is how many people choose to play it over time. And similarly, just because a game is "good" by that measurement, does not mean everyone will enjoy it. For example, I think Skyrim is a hilariously bad game, but that is because I'm a snobbish, pompous ass who likes my games to have "deep RPG mechanics," whatever that means. But at the end of the day there is a reason it gets re-released constantly, and why even to this day there are plenty of people playing it.

And this kind of talk about "breaking into a normie market" smacks of a bloated sense of self-importance. Sure, you might like your games to have more "complexity" than the average person (and even the average GSG player these days) would. But that does not make you get more of a say in how this game should be developed, or implies that you are somehow more "enlightened" than anyone else.

Now on some level I can see your point, there are indeed certain games that lean in to that addictive nature of theirs. League of Legends is one such example, I should know (four months clean). No matter what Riot does, people will still be playing it. But again that does not mean those people cannot have unbiased opinions about how other games should look like.

Also, what does this have to do with 2D vs. 3D, anyway?

If they chucked 3d portraits now theyd save so much money in future modelling and debugging costs. Ck3 pre order model dlc still has clipping issues
Does that really matter? From my experience people don't care about such detalis as long as they like the game. I have repeatedly heard people praise Elden Ring as a polished game with a high attention to details. In one of the first (and few) Elden Ring streams I ever tuned in to the streamer immidiately praised the game as extremely polished. Within 2 minutes of watching I had noticed the sword scabbard pretty much constantly sticking through the cloak of their character and a metal weapon hitting what looked like obvious wooden stairs making the sound of metal vs. metal or stone, and striking sparks. Noone seemed to care though. They liked the game.

I hope its possible to turn it off cause unless Paradoxy removes events wich give you famous historical figures it will probably end up with a situation where a event gives you Charles the first

Sometimes when a developer of a series of games does something that the "old fans" don't like they blame it on them trying to sell the game to "casuals", which is pretty stupid because companies are always trying to sell their games to new people. I remember people doing this with BF1 when it came out(even thought I think that game is a lot better than BF4).

And talking about COD and Battlefield, a lot of people like to act like their really unique because they don't like what they think "the masses" like, and a lot of the time it seems to me that they're just part of a slightly smaller fanbase( like people who think they're super unique because they listen to Queen or other classic rock instead of modern music)

Someone will just make a mod. This is not an issue. Paradox games are carried by mods heavily anyways.
Yeah, Paradox games ARE carried by mods. CK2 is particularly stymied in that regard because suddenly modders need to learn full 3D modelling for any setting changes. And you will not that after several years they have NOT succeeded in creating a practical hack for replacing 3D portraits with "2D" images since the system is damn complex under the hood.

What I can say that, besides the visuals in character-related features that you have seen so far (and a few others that we have yet to cover) they are not as present as they are in other games like Vicky or CK3. This is not a game focused on characters or pops, they are supporting elements in Project Caesar.
Does this mean that, if there is no official support for 2D portraits, it will at least be much easier to replace the models with static "billboards" of 2D art? In CK2 modders were not able to do that because systems like aging or weight change were hopelessly incompatible with attempts to replace characters with something so non-humanoid.

My visual preference for 2D vs 3D is not strong. But I fear 3D models cripples the total conversion modding scene for almost no real GAINS elsewhere.

I agree, but I think you used the worst example.

People who play WoW are like:
'I hate this game, blizzard has ruined it, worst game I have ever played'
