  • Character models and backgrounds break up the monotony of text and numbers. Maybe some want to play a glorified spreadsheet simulator, but I can assure you, most of the wider public doesn't.
I just came here to say this is a false dichotomy. I am against the 3d models as I feel they are not needed but the doesn't mean I want a spreadsheet.
I feel that the more money they spend on the 3d model engine the more characters will be forced into the game. While I don't want a spreadsheet I also don't want a picture book.

  • 3D models are here to stay. Better off giving constructive criticism rather than clutching pearls.
Doesn't mean I have to like it and shouldn't voice my opinion. We did get stripped occupation as an option with enough voices.

It's not that deep. The main point is that character models and backgrounds break up the monotony of text and numbers. If you agree, cool. If you don't, cool.

Strawman. Nobody said you must like it, or that you cannot voice your opinion. I only suggested that, since 3d is here to stay, constructive criticism is more useful.

I'm utterly uninterested in debating any further whether someone likes 3d or not. It's a useless, entirely subjective conversation that does nothing for the quality of the feedback used to improve the game.

Don't you think that those big, bright and sharp flags make 3D portraits seem worse and more 'blurry'? Because we subconsciously compare them in one image.
Also the flag is clearly dominant this way.

I really like those flags, but maybe it should be moved further from the character to the header or general country info?
I am not an artist or designer at all, so I am just interested in your opinions.

I think they flag should be reduced in size a bit and put next to the name of the country, like the flag should be left of the "Order of Knight Hospitaller" while the characters should be blown up a little. Generally though I was quite skeptical of the 3d models and still am a little but I will say that the recent models have been looking a lot more polished and detailed, clearly still needs some work especially with the clothing but I'm liking the progress.

Okay, so I was against the 3D portraits and still think 2D portraits could be better, but after seeing the latest gameplay videos, I do think that they don’t look nearly as bad as they did when they were first revealed. The models definitely got a glow up since they were first shown. The small motion also makes them look much better than they appear in a static image. This is something I can live with and maybe even grow to like.

My thoughts exactly

I'm just going to say it. The 3D animated characters that the devs have made look great. I have seen a significant amount of the community say that they're awful 3D slop and calling for their removal and replacement with 2D portraits similar to EU4 or Hearts of Iron. Those haters have absolutely no taste and I'm convinced that they only say they look bad because they're bandwagoning off of each other. I personally think they are the best looking characters in a Paradox game to date, surpassing even Crusader Kings 3. Having 3D characters over 2D portraits in a game is a natural evolution and are better because they are animated, can age, change clothing to fit every style and situation, have DNA data, and can look much more diverse as they're not constrained by a limited and repeating number of drawn portraits. I have no idea how people can genuinely say that seeing Generic European Guy #5 as the ruler of your country multiple times is more immersive than a 3D character that can change through the ages.

Just compare what the 2D character portraits in EU4 look like to the 3D ones in EU5:

Keep in mind that these characters look even better when they're actually animated in-game. Nobody can convince me that these characters look bad and I will not hear the slander any longer.

With some exceptions, I think they look fine like this. When they're presented in a small, focused bust shot. No problem with that at all.

The problem comes when they're presented in large, empty spaces that take up a disproportionate amount of screen space in addition to making the character seem almost uncanny in their loneliness in a given scene. It's not so much the 3D characters by themselves for me, but the way they're so often presented in the UI.

I hadn't been able to put my finger on why they looked a tad off to me, and I think you're right. They look fine in isolation, but one dude in a massive room looks strange no matter how cool they look.
I like the 3d portraits well enough. I think it's both great for what the ceiling is, but I also have concerns about how this will work for mods. Ck3 for example I think was not how go handle this, and I hope EUV is different :)

Yea, they look so good I was also skeptical at first, but it turned out to be really nice and it is still work in progress so we might expect them to look even better by the release

Look as a person who really dislike it on the beginning, I can appreciate how much they evolve from the original Talks. They look really good at the moment. Still not a big fan of them on the corner left of the screen, but i had to admit they look so much good in comparative with early designs.

I find the 3D portraits pretty good too. I am curious about how the aging process will look, because in CK3 that does not always work out that well imo but we will see.
I would also be fine with 2D art if they're HoI4 level quality because... I find the EU4 portraits hideous tbh.

I'm saying this since the beginning - they look fine. Even the ones presented early on were in the "great - acceptable" range. Right now they all look very nice.

I'd only prefer greater cultural variety as seeing Roman Emperor wearing tiny western crown and clothing and with western European background is heartbreaking.

I always felt that the 3D models on CK3 aged a little bad compare with 2D models. As with 3D you can feel the ''age'' when was created, compare with a 2D Ilustration.
