Oh, it's moved to a mega thread. I was typing my response, and it just disappeared.

Why not have 3D models? We learned more about characters in this tinto talk: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/developer-diary/tinto-talks-15-june-5th-2024.1685161/

-Dynasties

-Inheritance laws

-Royal marriages with characters

It seems this secret game will focus slightly more on characters compared to Eu4, and having 3D portraits will, in my opinion, feel more immersive than just seeing a name.
But who knows, Project Caesar might even be CK4.
God no...

I haven't even played CK3 yet, in part because of my utter disgust for the direction they went with 3D models, I mean hell, they even spawned a whole DLC just to improve the 3D models and increase their presence. If they do that horseshit with PC I guess I'll have to stick to EU4 for another decade...

I honestly don't mind the concept of giving your character a face, I just don't like how it's going to take up a whole window. CK2's don't really look good but I don't mind them at all. My main problem is screen clutter.
They could definitely make them more compact. Simple CK2-style circular portraits would be enough for the game's purposes, or perhaps the card-like portraits from Imperator?

This would be great! CK2 has really good UI. Very little clutter. CK3 makes up for it by having the characters pretty effectively done and often well-animated, but this is not something we need, want, or can feasibly expect from EU5. Why have them at all?

3d character models suck, but I’m afraid they’re here to stay.

Hopefully cosmetic mods don’t disable achievements in PC and these can be modded away.
Yeah, I agree, I know is WIP, but not a big fan. I will prefer they focus on a 2D art for characters, as I personally thinks looks better, and i find the 3D models a little distracting.

If I had to rank the 3D models, I'd put them at: Stellaris > CK3 > PC > Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask > Superman 64 > Vic3

That said, I feel PC models are getting slightly better, at least. But they still feel out of place.

I vastly prefer this format. And I maintain that a big problem of the current 3D models isn't really the models themselves, but the fact that they're presented alone in large, empty spaces. I even prefer the background art in this format, as something is going on, and it's not just a big cream wall occupying a huge amount of screen real estate.

It's insane to me that someone can look at EU4 and go "You know what this game needs? Massive amounts of the screen covered by beloved characters right out of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006)!"

I feel as though the reason PDX is doubling down on character models in their latest games is due to the success of CK3 in brining in more casual players to the fanbase.

Making a game as mechanically complex as the EU series with quite an insular community like our own more "approachable" to a wider consumer base will go a long way to selling more copies.

Or so Paradox thinks.

I think.

I think they're right, even if it's just a few people. The games get a bit of a reputation as unapproachable nerd games, but I've known a few people (especially women) who do enjoy it more than they thought they would once they try it, so making it look like less of a spreadsheet simulator does help with that. And for the people who do want a spreadsheet simulator, it's way easier to just turn off 3d models with a mod

I don't hate the current ones but the rulers feel soulless, like they have no personality,I wish they made their pose exaggerated by their personality (like a lazy ruler would look tired and slightly hunchback,a greedy one would look malicious and full of jewellery)
Only problem would be the sheer quantity of poses you would need, but maybe with time they could add enough to make most rulers in a campaign feel unique

I think this could go a long way to make them more likeable, because right now they look like they're standing still for a painting, but given all these dynamic backgrounds which can clash in energy, lighting, or just the style in general.

Examples of the difference in energy I'm talking about could be these:
Bolstering Timbuktu.png
Hussite Wars2.png

They sort of have the rulers awkwardly standing there while all sorts of chaos goes on behind them.

Another solution could be to lean more into that painting/portrait feeling by giving them a little UI box to stand in, so it doesn't seem like they're literally inside the chaos

Here I feel they are taking perfectly good event art and forcing 3d models onto them. I feel the 3d models are unneeded in the event art.

Please don't make these into caricatures.

No caricatures, just slight exaggeration to get the rulers personality across and make them do something instead of just standing there
