Tinto Maps #27 - 22nd of November 2024 - Oceania

Hello, and welcome to another Friday devoted to map worship! You may remember me, Pavía, from previous Tinto Maps, as @Roger Corominas has been dutifully taking care of the last 6 dev diaries. Now he’s focusing on some other tasks, and I’ll be in charge of the last 4, as it’s planned that the war Tinto Maps will be over by Christmas. This doesn’t mean that we will be done with the maps of Project Caesar, though - we will continue posting Tinto Maps Feedback posts in the next few months. And the next one will be a very much anticipated one - the Balkans, next week! But let’s focus now on today’s region: Oceania!

Countries
Countries.jpg

A bit different map today, as there are no regular countries in the entire region… All of them are Societies of Pops! Also, down to the right, that is not ‘Linear Atlantis’, but our ‘3D Material Testing Island’, where our (great) 3D artists test how the different combinations of terrains look in-game.

It may be relevant to repeat our guidelines for how to categorize countries and societies, by the way:

  • Settled Countries (State Societies)
    • Organized through States, which implies a public power holding:
      • Monopoly of violence
      • Tax collection
      • Public works
      • Writing/record-keeping systems
  • Societies of Pops (Stateless Societies)
    • Societies lacking a State properly, but that have some complex organizational features, such as (not necessarily all, but some):
      • Chiefdomly authority
      • Permanent settlements
      • Agricultural development
      • Some kind of taxation
  • Non-Tag Cultures (Bands/Kin Groups)
    • Simple societies, usually hunter-gatherers or shifting agriculturalists, don't organize around power structures, but through horizontal ones
    • Their pops won't be part of any type of tag, akin to EU4 natives

Societies of Pops

SoPs1.jpg

SoPs2.jpg

SoPs3.jpg

There are a few Societies of Pops in Oceania, in three main hubs: Hawaii, Fiji-Samoa-Tonga, and New Zealand. We’d be interested in listening to your feedback on this matter, nonetheless.

Plenty of different maps today, to be able to show as many different regions as possible. This is very highly WIP, and some of the islands may end up dying because of their size and being unimportant. By the way, you may notice that some of the islands are weirdly rounded up - that’s because they have a different type of terrain, ‘Atoll’, which is the last one that we were able to add to the game in due time during the development process.

There are some very good natural harbors in the region, including a very infamous one in O’ahu…

Tons of different cultures today!

As mentioned last week, we’ve split Animism into several ‘cultural confessions’, which we want now to recombine into broader families; so, again, any suggestions are welcome!

Resources are, in general terms, quite basic, food-oriented ones; although Australia is more varied, obviously, and there are some areas very rich in Pearls.

Markets

Ternate is the main market of the western part of the region, although you may notice that there’s very little access in most of the locations.

Population
There are some issues with the Population distribution map of the region this week, but I’m letting you know that the total population is 1.885M.

And that is all for today! If you want a more detailed map of a given area, just let me know, as I’m aware that the scale of the region shown doesn’t fit well with the usual format of Tinto Maps.

Next week we will take a look at the last continent remaining, starting with the region of North America. See you!

What do you think about splitting Tahiti into two separate locations - Tahiti Nui and Tahiti Iti (see map below)?

Tahiti map.jpg

This is a natural division and since the entire island is over 1000 km², even the smaller location (Tahiti Iti), taking up a quarter of the entire island, would still be of similar size, or even larger than many of the neighboring islands (which are separate locations). Having more than one location on a single island would be something unique in Polynesia (as only Hawaii and New Zealand can boast this) and it would emphasize Tahiti's importance against the surrounding smaller islands and atolls, as the largest and most recognizable island in the entire area. It would also allow, although only to a minimal degree, to reflect the divisions within the island itself, such as the division into different clans, etc.

Hi guys, I'm back this time with a proposal for the land where they eat their crows and drink their pies, South Australia. For this proposal I have increased South Australia's locations count to 49 from ~48. However I have also shrunk those locations and concentrated them on the more densely inhabited parts of the state. In particular, I have removed the locations along the coastal Nullabor, which I believe should be wasteland. Actually I believe it (along with large portions of Central Australia) should be represented with Sahara style corridors, but that's outside of the scope for this proposal.

If only one change gets considered from this proposal, please revisit the vegetation layout for South Australia. The current version is very incorrect, especially in the northern and western-most locations. The Nullabor could possibly be the least Jungle location on the planet outside of Antarctica, and ideally should be represented as anything but jungle.

Provinces

I have designed the proposal with the intention it be made into an area, with 7 provinces. Each province has 6-8 locations. For the names, I did the best I could to come up with something significant for the region for each, there are no perfect names that I know of though and I imagine there'll be better suggestions out there. I had trouble deciding where to draw the line on the northernmost provinces. I decided to stop under the lakes mostly for aesthetic reasons. At the end of the day, the land further north is inhabited by plenty of Indigenous people during the game's timeframe, any border here is going to need to be fairly arbitrary. In my opinion, this is more reason to consider the inclusion of Central Australia in some way shape or form.

Locations

For the locations, I have provided both an Indigenous name and an English/British culture name. For the Indigenous names, where possible I went with the indigenous name for a local landmark. Failing that, I would use a town name with Indigenous origins, as these usually came from Indigenous names for the area. Failing that, I went with a clan that was found in the location, and failing that I went with the Nation. I wanted to avoid clan and nation names to account for demographic shifts during gameplay and because the borders aren't very aligned with indigenous borders. I can provide my justifications for any name choices on request. I'll admit upfront though that some are a bit of a stretch.

Culture

I have provided a list of the nations I believe should be present in a given location, as well as approximate minority numbers. I based these numbers on territorial overlap within the locations, not historical population density.

Climate

Climate is a bit changed, I've expanded the amount of Mediterranean. Most of it is still Cold Arid. (I know that's the official name but man I hate the idea of calling some of these locations 'Cold' lol)
1739701795372.png

Topography

Tinto was basically correct to make this nothing but Flatland. I've added in some Hill and Plateau for the Flinders Ranges.

1739701931264.png

Vegetation

I've gone with Sparse and Desert in places where Tinto went for Forest and Grassland. I'm prepared to admit I may have been a little too harsh and some of what I've called Sparse should be Grassland. It's a hard line to draw in my opinion. Erring on the side of Sparse captures the vibe of outback South Australia best in my opinion

1739702234802.png

Natural Harbours

I made Adelaide a pretty good natural harbour, they have the shelter and they have the river, which Tinto scores highly, but they also have had to dredge out the river mouth to keep things deep enough. So who knows, I think pretty good is fair. I've scattered a few decent natural harbours around the state. The have plenty of little port towns with their own little bays in South Australia. A lot of these places haven't had a lot written about them that I can find, so I might have over/underrated some and completely overlooked others.
Trade Goods

I mostly left these blank except for where I felt a certain resource really deserved a shout out. Mostly to highlight where gold should be produced. I have added metals where they were found historically. Unfortunately all of these deposits were accessed after the game timeline, but I believe it is still fair to add them to add texture to the region. In my opinion, the presence of geologists was the biggest factor for when these mines became operational, not technology or similar reasons. For the rest of the locations, I think a hodge podge of various natural goods like wild game, fish, fruits, legumes, sturdy grains, fur, medicaments, dye etc. with locations adjusted for game balance and taste. If trade goods can change with development/ownership, then a lot of these should transition to agricultural products like wool, livestock, wheat and horses.

Summary

Thank you for reading, let me know if you have any thoughts, questions or additions

This is an excellent post, but a couple of points I'd raise.

Vegetation:
I'm not really sure what definitions Tinto is using for their Vegetation - clearly some odd ones to classify a desert called Null Arbor as a Jungle. But I think 13, 16, 18, 19 should be at least grassland. A fair amount of clearing had to be done to get these areas to their current sparse level of vegetation. I agree most areas Paradox have put as forest should be sparse or desert, however at least 4 should stay forest - see the remnants near the southern end of the peninsula.

Indigenous names:
I think the correct Indigenous name for 48 (Ceduna) is Tjutjuna, rather than Cheeduna. A quick search for the latter only brings up your post, while the former is used by the Ceduna Aboriginal Corporation.

English Names:
I'd name 4 Moonta, being the location of the Copper mines you've included, over Maitland, which was less significant.
For 5, Balaklava isn't really an English name, coming from a battle in Crimea. I'd name it Port Wakefield, which was initially the main port for the Copper mines at Burra. Balaklava was originally only a rest stop on that route.
For 28, Burra is far more significant than Mount Bryan. In 1851 Burra was the 7th largest settlement in Australia, and the largest inland settlement. I'd also add copper to Burra, as it was a larger deposit that started being mined at the same time, and using the same methods, as Moonta's.

German Names:
There were enough German settlers in South Australia that there are some options for dynamic German names, should Tinto want to implement them.
1 - Adelheid (Birth name of Princess, later Queen Adelaide)
2 - Hahndorf
15 - Paech or Pflaum (both pre-WW1 Hundreds in this area)
16 - Jaenschtown, or Jaenschstadt, to properly Germanise it (Pre-WW1 name for what is now part of Murray Bridge)
17 - Von Doussa (Pre-WW1 name for the Hundred of Allenby, which contains Pinneroo and Lameroo)
29 - Bethanien? (Pre-WW1 name of Bethany). There are a few other options here. Tanunda is the largest Barossa town founded by Germans, but its name is of Indigenous origins. Rosenthal (Rosedale), and Seppeltsfeld (Seppeltsfield) are other Barossa options. Blumburg (Birdswood) and Lobethal are prominent towns towards the southern end of the location, but I'd prefer a name from the Barossa, given that Hahndorf already represents the Adelaide Hills.
30 - Krichauff (Pre-WW1 name for the town of Mount Mary, and the Hundred of Beatty)
31 - Petersburg (Pre-WW1 name for Peterborough)
34 - Muller's Hill, or Mullers Hügel. (Pre-WW1 name for Yandina Hill).
44 - Homburg (Pre-WW1 name for the Hundered of Haig)
47 - Cape Bauer, or Kap Bauer (Peninsula next to Streaky Bay, and one of the places to have its pre-WW1 name reinstated)

Thank you very much for responding. My secret dream was that me putting suggestions out in the world would get more knowledgeable people to make suggestions / corrections.

Vegetation I'm finding is always a weird one. Like a lot of land in inland Australia seems to have been been open, and covered in a species of grass, but fertility/population-wise doesn't really gel with the gameplay implications of a location being 'Grassland'. That said, I did feel I was a little too harsh with the amount of Sparse I went with. I'll edit my table.

Cheeduna came from me making a mistake typing out Cheedoona, which in turn came from the Ceduna District Council's history page. I do feel the Aboriginal Corporation trumps the Council, so I will edit that along with your English name suggestions.

Cheers

Hi guys, today I'm here with my proposal for the southern half of Western Australia. I believe these locations should together make up the area of South Western Australia, and that it should not go anywhere near as far north as it does in the Tinto version. This time around I tried to do minimal alterations to the actual location layout (with one exception), and have instead focused on suggesting what I believe are improvements on the names provided by Tinto. I have increased the location count from ~64 to 78, although 10 of those new locations are in the form of an entirely new province I am proposing.

Provinces

I have designed the proposal with the intention it be made into an area, with 9 provinces. Each province has 7-10 locations. For the names, I did the best I could to come up with something significant for the region for each, there are no perfect names that I know of though and I imagine there'll be better suggestions out there. I have two major changes to the province layout put forward by Tinto. The first is creating a dense pocket of locations in the area of modern day Perth and surrounds, to create that natural capital feeling. The second is the addition of an entirely new province in the arid north. I believe this province warrants inclusion because there were a decent amount of people living out there and it's full of gold. I think the gold and the hostile terrain gives a nice risk versus reward gameplay decision for anyone playing in the area.

Locations

For the locations, I have provided both an Indigenous name and an English/British culture name. For the Indigenous names, where possible I went with the indigenous name for a local landmark. Failing that, I would use a town name with Indigenous origins, as these usually came from Indigenous names for the area. I have gone over Paradox's names for the locations and highlighted where I think a change is warranted. A lot of the time Paradox decided to use the names of the people who lived on or around the locations as the location names, I believe this is flawed because people moved around a lot, and the locations rarely match up well to the actual lands of the nations in question. It also meant Paradox fell into the trap of using various spellings of the same word for different locations.

Gold text in the Location Number column means I have altered the borders.

Red Text in the Tinto Name column means I strongly believe the name warrants changing for one reason or another, usually geographic inaccuracy. Yellow text means I believe it warrants changing for improved accuracy but I see how Paradox arrived at that name.

Culture

I have provided a list of the nations I believe should be present in a given location, as well as approximate minority numbers. I based these numbers on territorial overlap within the locations, not historical population density. My biggest change is breaking up Noongar into smaller groups to bring them into line with the rest of the cultures in the area. Naturally they should share a culture group etc.

Climate

For Climate, I mostly just expanded the presence of Mediterranean, and got rid of the Oceanic

1741688531191.png

Topography

Tinto was basically correct to make this nothing but Flatland. I've added in some Hill and Plateau based on Sulfurologist's suggestions.

1741688609647.png

Vegetation

I've demoted the jungle to forest and the forest to woodland, I've also degreenified a lot of what Paradox had as Forest, I think Sparse and Desert is generally more appropriate. I'd like to know if anyone thinks I should add more Grassland, as I feel it is lacking in my version.

1741688822911.png

Natural Harbours

Not a lot of fantastic natural harbours in the state, but a few decent ones scattered about. Fremantle is decent with the mouth of the Swan, but can be a bit shipwrecky with the wind and the reefs. I put Bunbury in as the best harbour in this part of the state, based on the advice of a bloke I chatted to in the Fremantle Maritime Museum. He seemed to know what he was about. Fremantle is very serious about their maritime museums.

Trade Goods

I mostly left these blank except for where I felt a certain resource really deserved a shout out. Mostly to highlight where gold should be produced. I have added some metals where they were found historically but most of the deposits the region is famous for were accessed after the game timeline. I believe it is still fair to add some of them to add texture to the region. Lots of gold is important because this part of the world is the site of a pretty intense gold rush, I think we want to capture that.

Raja Ampat/Kalana Fat as province name; Splitting Tidore and Doberai to make Raja Ampat/Kalana Fat
Raja Ampat is the modern name and Kalana Fat is the name in Ma’ya language. As Ma’ya is used as lingua franca in the area, Kalana Fat makes sense if a traditional name is preferred.

Being geographically separated from mainland Papua and having stronger ties to North Maluku justify this archipelago as its own province.

Gebe province grouping
Gebe island should be part of South Halmahera (currently Tidore). The island would be part of the Patani-Gebe location. Which I'll get to include on Halmahera feedback on Indonesia region Tinto Map eventually.
1742736059537.png

Splitting Maden to Batanta and Samate/Sailolof
Maden appears to be the name of a language group in the area, however the word Maden itself is not recognized by the locals. Current Maden location is made of two islands, Batanta and Salawati. While Batanta never stood as its own “kingdom” its position as the 4th largest island in archipelago should make it appropriate.
Salawati seems to be a name of Islamic influence, which is anachronistic for the game time, but I can't find a local name for it. There are two “kingdoms” in the area that are Sailolof and Samate (alternative of Salawati). Given unclarity of the two names and mention of Tidore influence in case of Sailolof it’s also likely also anachronistic. Pick your poison I guess?
  1. Sistem politik tradisional di Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Studi perbandingan
  2. Laura Arnold – Salawati
Batanta trade goods: fish/medicaments
The locals in Batanta use “wil-gelfun” (Coscinium fenestratum) to treat malaria. I tried to look up the use of these plants on other Raja Ampat islands but found no similar information. Not a very strong case, but I guess it’s interesting to mention.

  3. Coscinium fenestratum, Obat Tradisional Malaria di Pulau Batanta
Culture/Language
Moi culture in Samate/Sailolof location would be alright as Maden refers to a language group and Moi does spread to the island. Ma’ya is used as lingua franca. Batanta would have some Biak people (from island of Biak in Cendrawasih bay).

I know we probably won't see a population map until the review so im curious what sources do you guys use for polynesia ?
I've been trying to research the topic myself so i'll post a couple books i've been reading on the topic.

-The Growth and Collapse of Pacific Island Societies and
-Using lidar and Bayesian inference to reconstruct archaeological populations in the Kingdom of Tonga

One interesting thing that came up and i haven't noticed any of the dev diaries mention is the fact that polynesia(and oceania as a whole tbh) experienced a disease induced population collapse similar to what the Americas have albeit less severe, will this also be modeled with a unique disease similar to the great pestilence ?

Hi guys, I'm back this time with New South Wales, or Eastern Australia, as it should be called in game. Right off the bat you're going to notice that I've gone a little bit mad with adding locations. Usually I try to stick as close as possible to Tinto's location numbers, but at the end of the day New South Wales is just too damn big and they have all the early settlement stuff that's worth a shoutout in game. I have increased the location count ~66 to 103. Apart from some locations around modern day Sydney these locations are mostly comfortably over 2000 km2, usually closer to 4000 km2, so I don't think I'm being too unreasonable.

Provinces

My big beef with the way Paradox did provinces in Australia is that they largely just lumped various locations into large groupings without much consideration for geography or political history. New South Wales is great (if only for this one thing) because they already divide themselves into intuitive little pieces that make for excellent sized and consistently themed provinces. Basically, you've got North, South and Central versions of each of the Coast, the Great Dividing Range, the Tablelands and the flat farming country, plus Sydney and the Far West. I stuck to this basic template, except that I split the Riverina in two so that south of the Murrumbidgee and Snowy Mountains could be added to the "South East Australia" Area if there are balance concerns. It could also be worth chopping off some of the western most provinces and creating a new "Central Eastern Australia" Area.

Modern day Sydney and surrounds. World class harbour with a river, so I reckon it's worth a 100. There's a reason they landed here first

South Coast region. a few good ports, including the excellent Eden, 3rd deepest natural harbour in the southern hemisphere. Hilly and mild with dense vegetation
3

Snowy Mountains region. Densely forested mountains in the south of the state. I've added some impassables to represent the roughness of the terrain. Could be added to South Eastern Australia alongside Murrumbidjeri if more balance between Areas is needed

Southern Tablelands region and including modern day Canberra. Quite rough terrain but also nice for farming

7
Blue Mountains region west of Sydney. Very rough and decently obstructive to early settlement, which I think is best represented by some impassable terrain.

Riverina Region between the Murray River and the Murrumbidgee. Beautiful flat farming country. Could be added to South Eastern Australia area alongside Ngarigo if one seeks to balance the areas out. Historically the border was almost placed along the Murrumbidgee. You could argue that historically this part of the world was part of the Melbourne market, hence being south of the Barassi Line.
12
PurpleGalari
7
Riverina region north of the Murrumbidgee. Same beautiful flat open farming country as what lies south of the river, but closer to Sydney.
13

The Orana region. Flat open farmland, right at the edge of where the land starts to get really inhospitable. I've expanded the border into the wasteland because the land here is perfectly within tolerance for not being wastelnad. It's not even desert, or arid, mostly.
14
GreenBaaka
5
Far West Region. Flat, hot and sparsely vegetated, leading into desert to the north west. I've expanded the border slightly further into the desert wasteland to the north because I feel it provides better representation of local peoples and because it looks better in my opinion
15
CreamBarranbinya
5
Northern part of the Far West Region. Same as above but I thought the ground covered was too big to be only one province. Flat, hot and sparsely vegetated, leading into desert to the north west. Most of this region is wasteland as put forward by Tinto. I believe it should be included however, it was fully mapped out by Europeans during the game's timeframe and is perfectly habitable, if harsh.

Red Text in the Tinto Name column means I strongly believe the name warrants changing for one reason or another, usually geographic inaccuracy. Yellow text means I believe it warrants changing for improved accuracy but I see how Paradox arrived at that name.

I have also added some impassable terrain in the Great Dividing Range.

1743194045239.png

Culture

I have provided a list of the nations I believe should be present in a given location, as well as approximate minority numbers. I based these numbers on territorial overlap within the locations, not historical population density.

Climate

For Climate, I have gone with something broadly similar to Paradox, just with some shifted borders between the various climate zones.

1743194079787.png

Topography

The Great Dividing Range is mostly represented by Hills and Plataeus, and I tried to base it off of Sulphurologist's work. I think scattered impassable terrain works best for giving that 'divisive' factor the mountains are known for.

1743194136511.png

Vegetation

Dense forest on the coast, leading to grasslands, leading to sparse, leading to desert, as you go further west. The main difference is that I added much more grassland than Tinto, which I think is warranted by the productivity of the farmland in this region.

1743194179804.png

Natural Harbours

Sydney I think deserves to be recognised as one of the 100 point harbours of the world. They have shelter, they have the river, they have deep water and they have lots of space available. Eden I think deserves a shoutout as a 75 pointer, it's the third deepest natural harbour in the southern hemisphere and even today serves as one of the major bases for Autralia's fishing fleet. Beyond that there are a handful of nice bays and harbours scattered up and down the coast.

Trade Goods

I mostly left these blank except for where I felt a certain resource really deserved a shout out. Mostly to highlight where gold should be produced. I have added metals where they were found historically.

I don't know if it's been posted yet but there's this map:

Something else to consider is Goyder's line. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goyder's_Line It was submitted to the South Australian government in 1865 and marks the area north of which the weather is too arid for long term crop cultivation. Historically this was often ignored by colonists who set up weat farms north of the line during years with excess rainfall. However, these farms didn't survive all to long once precipitation dropped to regular levels again. I would suggest changing all the crop trade goods north of the line to something else.

the AIATSIS/Horton map isn't fully accurate because it merges smaller groups into their larger neighbors but Arnhem land is quite accurate when compared to the Tindale map which Horton based his map on

Both maps have their issues. You can use them for rough reference, but the details can be wrong.

Another issue is that some of the groups moved once colonisation started and others died off, so the maps won't give you a particularly accurate idea of where certain groups were or some which even existed before 1788.

I've gone for a more maximalist approach. I think there's cause to include locations along the Darling River. I also think there's cause to include some of the inland trade routes, though most aren't visible in NSW and I'm aware I've gone overboard as it is. There should be impassible terrain along the Great Dividing Range, though I haven't drawn any.

I went through the maps to suggest harbour levels and modern settlements to the locations in Australia, as well as to suggest the inland trade routes in both pre- and post-colonial times. But I found that some of the locations had names that were in completely the wrong places, like 1000km away in some cases. Some of the borders don't really follow major geographic features such as the impassable mountain ranges or major rivers, nor did they follow pre-colonial borders either. Some quite populated / developed areas (either modern Australia or Aboriginal pre-colonial Australia - not always the same thing) have large blobby locations whilst other less populated areas had quite granular locations.

(For names I've tried to suggest local Aboriginal names for the modern Australian settlement in that location. Where that was not possible I've suggested names for the region. Where that was also not possible, I've tried to suggest the names of the local clans or hordes in the area. And where that wasn't possible, I defaulted to names of the nation / group that inhabited the area).

And on harbour levels, Australian location sizes are far larger than locations elsewhere in the world (NB* i think this is fine. Neither Aboriginal Australia nor modern Australia have large populations relatively speaking). But I think the result of this is me suggesting a higher number of natural harbours per location than there would be anywhere else.

So anyway, I'm suggesting a bit of a major rework. It's a lot of work - Australia is enormous, but I'll start with Tasmania since it's so easy:

View attachment 1227949

I'm suggesting for Tasmania to have a large uninhabited west. There's never been many people in that swathe of country. I added two corridors through it, but I don't actually know if they're realistic. I've only been through that part of the world once and whilst I personally don't think they'd be traversible in period by armies, I'm not local and so have no idea. Some of these, especially Plangermaireener, might be too small and could be merged easily into neighbouring locations. But I tried to suggest a location for each Aboriginal group.

the fish locations should be Wild Game until colonised since seals made up ~70% of meat intake and Wallabies made up ~18% in coastal zones and Tasmanians stopped eating fish on a large scale around 3700 years ago

My suggestions for Queensland up this time.

Some of the (admittedly too many) locations of the inland trade routes are shown. There were major trade routes in the pre-colonial era that were centred around Lake Eyre in South Australia and the ephemeral creeks in Queensland that flow into it.
