Tinto Flavour #18 - 16th of May 2025

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Tuesdays & Fridays in which we take a look at the content of Europa Universalis V!

Today, we will be taking a look at the flavour content for the Sultanate of Delhi, the most powerful Indian country in 1337 - but not without a few curveballs to tackle. Let’ start without further ado:

A series of swift and legendary conquests in the last century gave birth to our great Sultanate of Delhi. With territories under our jurisdiction that span from Deccan to the fertile fields of Lahore, none other has dared measure up to the prestige and status of our accomplishments.

However, it has become apparent that we have overextended our authority across such a big Sultanate that it is nowadays quite difficult to control. Our enemies are many, and they covet to undo our great heritage. To the east, our subjects in Bengal have started questioning their masters, while our southern territories have long disputed our hold over them. And the Hindu countries of Southern India may further entrench their resistance to our rule, led by the rising power of Vijayanagar.

We trust the guidance of Sultan Muhammad Tughlaq, whose watchful eye may safeguard our lands and prevent our downfall...

The starting situation of Delhi. There’s a bug with the coloring of subjects of subjects, but Gaur has a subject itself, Taraf.

This is the starting Government setup content for Delhi, and other Indian Muslim Sultanates, as well:

Reform Taluqdar Nobility.png

Dharmic Dhimmi Communities.png

Protected Faith.png

The last one was already shown, but it’s super important for Delhi’s starting setup, as only 2% of its pops are Sunni, the state religion, as shown in the Country Selection screenshot.

Related to this, a tab that we usually don’t show, the Rebels one, as it’s also quite relevant to Delhi’s start:
Rebels.png

This is not final, but gives an idea that managing Delhi at the start may not be easy…

Delhi also starts with a Work of Art:
Qutb Minar.png

And here are some of its advances:
Advances Origin of Hindustani.png

Advances Indo-Persian Culture.png

Advances Turkic Conqueror Roots.png

Advances Reintegrate Provinces.png

Advances Afghan Nobility.png

Delhi’s advances are quite interesting - the country will need those modifiers…

But the most interesting for Delhi is its narrative content, because soon after the game starts, a situation will pop up, ‘The Fall of Delhi’:
Fall of Delhi1.png

Fall of Delhi2.png

Fall of Delhi3.png

Fall of Delhi4.png

Fall of Delhi5.png

Fall of Delhi6.png

Fall of Delhi Share of Power.png

Fall of Delhi Panel.png

So, when the situation is active, several events may trigger, which may influence the ‘Share of Power’ of the situation:
Fall of Delhi7.png

Fall of Delhi8.png

This modifier scales based on how many countries support the Opposing side.

This might end up being the situation some months after it starts, if the player is not careful enough:
Fall of Delhi9.png

The situation may last for years, even decades, creating a very challenging gameplay for Delhi, with even more events popping up:
The Mad Sultan.png

Habshi.png

Habshi2.png

The end requirements of the situation are the following, with different possibilities:
Fall of Delhi End Requirements.png

One of them is a disaster that may trigger to Delhi, making the situation even worst:
Dissolution of Delhi.png

Dissolution of Delhi2.png

Dissolution of Delhi3.png

While this disaster is active, some historical revolters may appear: the Bahmanis, Malwa, Gujarat, or Jaunpur. The player can choose to either keep playing as Delhi or to start playing with one of them.

Besides that, Delhi has dozens of other non-Situation, non-Disaster related events, such as:
The Old Seat of the Sultanate.png

Ghulaman.png

Tughlaq Salves.png

Hisar e Firuza.png

… And much more, but that’s all for today! This will be the schedule for next week:
  • Monday -> Tinto Maps Feedback about India
  • Tuesday -> Tinto Flavour about Sweden, hosted by @Johan
  • Wednesday -> Tinto Talks about Unit Graphics, hosted by @SaintDaveUK
  • Thursday -> Second ‘Behind the Scenes’ video!
  • Friday -> Tinto Flavour about Muscovy/Russia
Cheers!

Hello! In real life, minorities like the Siddi/Habshi established notable communities in Western India, particularly the Sindh, Hyderabad, and Gujarat, and political influence in many states. Shortly after the game's start time, these coalesced into minor states, one of which was known for defeating the Marathas and repelling their attempted conquest.

Likewise, South Asians likely had relationships with many Swahili cities, such as Shanga.

This is where my South Asia knowledge effectively ends :)

Will this be represented in the game?
Are there any plans for later-game flavour events related to populations like the Siddis and Habshi?

Also, are Indian Jews in this game?

Yoooooooo

How could a Muslim army that's less than 3% of the population have conquered and maintained authority over this many Hindus?

It looks like the privilege "Protected Faith of the Common People" is a Commoners Estate privilege.

I thought the Commoner estate represented the Muslim Commoners while the Dhimmi estate represented all other non-Muslims since adding all the estates pop except dhimmi (which isn't given) gives a pop of 918,899 which matches the "919k" Sunni pop in the religion demographic screenshot.

Why would the commoners need such a privilege if they are all Muslims to begin with?

What is Ulama and Umara? Generally, I think this "flavor" localisation type will be problematic if not careful. I am assuming it is some Indian cast? (maybe?) Am I correct in assuming there will be a tooltip when hovering to ensure players can understand?

EDIT: I'm not sure why I am being downvoted. Googling Umara or Ulama doesn't lead to any meaningful results (unless Ulama is a misspelling of Ulema). Feel free to downvote, but at least explain what it means.

EDIT2: thank to @king.kaiser7 for the explanation: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/tinto-flavour-18-16th-of-may-2025.1749817/post-30372847

As some more works of art I would suggest the Iron Pillar of Delhi, or just rename the Qutb Minar to the Qutb Complex instead since the pillar is also there. The Ellora caves in Daulatabad would be cool to have as well especially since they are not that old compared to the start date and are very well known. Alternatively, you could just put the Kailash temple if putting an entire cave system doesn’t fit thematically.

Also, as an India wide note, is there going to be anything about hunting tigers? Because many rulers would organize tiger hunts to gain popularity with local peasants. If not it would be cool to have a building that is a tiger hunting ground that gives peasants satisfaction in the province, but can only be built in jungle locations, and is destroyed after 5 years. Perhaps that is too much micro, but if that is the case then restrict it to only duchy tier or lower states.

1. I don't mean to be controversial, but I don't like "Israelite" to describe the religious group. It feels modern and Zionist, I feel "Jewish" will be a more neutral term.

2. I feel there should be more distinction for the histories at the bottom of the flavor events. Maybe add a small "history" at the top in order to differentiate the history text from the flavor text. Maybe add a spot of color as well.

So anyone familiar with Indian history, what's the story here? Why is it so divided and also independent from Delhi when the Deccan was conquered. I remember from a game as Kalinga in Imperator that the area was kind of Jungly and tribal and sort of a buffer region between myself and the Maurya. Is that just it that its sort of a hard to conquer interior region?

Good Tinto Flavour on Delhi.

The eastern areas near Orissa were mostly tribal belt, many areas did not even have settled agriculture, and so it was difficult to control, however, the local governors of the Sultanate did probably take tribute or levy troops from them whenever they invaded Orissa or Bengal, though the area is not given much importance in the period sources. As for Orissa, it was during this time a sometime tributary state, though it had to be forced to pay every few decades. Ferozshah forced a tribute, but later it got independent as sustained control was all but impossible.

I think the more northerly areas such as Bagelkhand should be under the Sultanate though, Baghelas were one of the Purabiya groups that served in the Sultanate armies.

A few suggestions regarding some historical aspects; for the Delhi Sultanate and North India (Second time posting this, more brief and concise)

1. Muqaddams and Khuts instead of Taluqdars. The term Taluqdar was not prevalent during this time.
The Muqaddams controlled the rural areas at sub district level. Another officer that was created at this tine was the Amir i Sadah, the Amir of 100. These Amirs of 100s were tasked with local level administrative, revenue and military control.

The greater chiefs in charge of a district or a few were called Ranas, these Ranas also supplied troops. and paid tribute to the Sultanate in return for internal autonomy.

2. Sultanate Military comprised of 2 categories; Qalb i Ala (Central Army) and the Lashkar i Atraf (Provincial Army).
The Central Army was made up of 3 types of main soldiers; Ghulam (Slave Soldiers), Iqtadars (Iqta or Estate holding cavalrymen), Silahdars (Salaried cavalrymen) and finally the Amir's contingents (Amir's leading troops from their Iqta, larger estate than those of Iqtadars).

4. Hisar i Firuz did not exist at this time, as the term suggests, the city was bulit by Ferozshah Tughlaq (1351-88). The city was built as part of a larger irrigation project in which Sultan Ferozshah had extensive canals dug to bring the water of the river Yamuna to modern day Haryana region.

5. Rajasthan control and vassals: So the Sultanate control of Rajasthan at this time was usually a mess, with even historians not having complete consensus. But there are a few things that we can fix; firstly, the areas of Northern and Eastern Rajasthan, Dhundhar, Bhatnir, Dadrew and Ranthambore etc under Sultanate control.

In Western Rajasthan Jaisalmer also remained under the Sultanate till 1350s when Ghatisimha Bhatti broke free of the Sultanate vassalage, and Central Marwar (Mandore, later Jodhpur district) also till 1390s when the Rathore Rajputs took it.

In Southern Rajasthan , Mewar was in a civil war, with the the Delhi Sultanate vassals; Songara Chauhans, who were under Banbir/Vanavira, controlling Chittor, Bhilwara and Eastern Mewar, as well as their ancestral land of Godwar (Southern Pali District). The Sisodiya rebels under Hammir Singh controlled the hilly Western Mewar around Kelwara (modern Rajsamand district). I've gone in more detail about this cvil war in my own thread, around 1338, Hammir managed to expel the Songaras, and free all of Mewar from the Songara and Sultanate control.

Yea. Like idk what to add, that's basically the gist of it. Even the Mughals conquered Orissa through Bengal, as the Nagpur plateau area was mostly tribal pops and kingdoms, and the dense jungles were too much of a hassle for major regional powers.

This is a mock-up of what they would look like if all the historical revolters were to gain independence at the same time, with the same locations that Delhi has in 1337:

What about Mewar, Rana Hamir Singh broke free from Delhi and expanded his kingdom, is that not modeled in the fall of Delhi scenario and would it be rather done through other possible ways or would it not be modelled in at all.

Mewar was quite an interesting tag to play in EU4, it would be a great fun to play from when they regained their independence and build them up from the foundation.

It would be nice if there was an option to start as one of the many countries that pops out of Delhi rather than having to start as Delhi then wait for the countries events to fire.

Perhaps when you select Delhi in the start menu there is an option to choose 1 of their "revolt" states. For the first few years you are a spectator while Delhi explodes while controlled by the AI then when your country rebels there is an option to choose to play as them.

This would avoid the awkwardness of playing as as Delhi, deliberately running into the ground before playing as a country from an event.

Alternatively, while spectating Delhi, whenever any revolt event occurs you are given the option to play as the revolting state similarly to as you would actually playing as Delhi, avoiding the awkwardness problem denoted above.

1. You need to wait for the situation to start, as you can't attack other subjects at the start.
2. All of them are Samantas.
3.
i apologize if this has already been brought up, but shouldn’t the Bahmani Sultan be called Sultan instead of Maharaja?

Additionally, shouldn’t Muslim rulers have a different system than the Samanta system? They come from a Perso-Turkic culture and tradition, so they would not be borrowing from Indic ideas of kingship but rather from the Islamic world.
