I have found that it's not that people like the 3D portraits, it's more that they don't care one way or another.

If you care about aesthetics then you tend to like the 2D, if you don't care you tend to like the status quo.
I wholeheartedly disagree with that. In general, yes, I don't care if we'll get 2D or 3D characters, what I mainly care about is the gameplay. But I absolutely do prefer their 3D characters. You can make absolutely beautiful characters in CK3, and the two characters Johan showed us so far are gorgeous in my opinion, especially the African one.

Its also a reason why many games nowadays tend to have cleaner UI, so that it can scale better without looking shit.
And thank you so much for this. As someone with bad eyesight, a scaling, clean UI is absolutely essential for me to play the game.

What do you disagree with? I said if you don't care that much you tend to prefer the the 3D.

Yes, the African one is very beautiful. The European is ok, but it's not good in my opinion, same with the ones in the family tree and the ruler history.

I've never said that CK3's portraits are bad, and many of the deficiencies in the character portrait system is mitigated by the type of game CK3 is, you play as a character, there are not many historical characters, the player injects personally into their own player character. There are many reasons why CK3's system can work where it doesn't necessarily work for other games.

Partially because most modders dont export textured with mipmaps or manually make good ones, so when the game scales assets it looks like shit.

Its a drawback of having a scaling UI and supporting both potatos and 4k screens, and one of the two main reasons for 3d portraits. Its also a reason why many games nowadays tend to have cleaner UI, so that it can scale better without looking shit.

The other main reason for 3d portraits is that its far easier and quicker to make content, and you can have much bigger variety.
All of this is fair but I am really sad to see the messy ol' Vicky2-CK2-EU4 UI go

While many don't like the new 3D portraits (myself included), the devs are obviously not going to just throw away perfectly good assets they've already paid for just to please a minority. However, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for a first-class UI mode option that doesn't have any portraits at all, both to be more similar to past EU games for those who want it, and to make the (sizeable) minority who don't like the look of 3D portraits happier. I and likely many others will install a mod as soon as possible to remove the portraits anyway, so it would be nice if the devs could include this option for those who would prefer it. Thanks

I think it might be a slap in the face to the artists and take the focus off making the 3D portraits as good as possible
You're definitely right about the artists, but unfortunately I think quite a few people would like to remove them anyway through 3rd party means. The vast majority of players will keep the portraits though, so I don't think it would really change the priorities around improving the art that much.

You said if A person doesn't care about aesthetics, they'll prefer the 3D portraits, and if they do, they'll prefer the 2D which is just not true. I and many others very much care about aesthetics. What I mean when I say "I don't care either way" is it's not a dealbreaker, I'm not going to boycott the game if it ends up having art that I dislike. Because that's just childish. (Not implying that you'd do this)
But I very much care about the 3D portraits, I'd love it of they kept this system because it's modularity allows for so many different unique beautiful characters, instead of a couple with custom drawn portraits.

How about a less offensive way of adding an option?in the graphical section of the setting there's a section where you can turn off 3d models just like you can turn rivers off in EU4.

Someone will just make a mod. This is not an issue. Paradox games are carried by mods heavily anyways.

I wonder what would happen if people had an option to display those 3D portraits as static 2D ones. What would they think about it - would they still hate them? Or not?

On the topic of surveys: we do regular qualitative and quantitative research about the topic and the outcome is always the same: more players prefer 3D over 2D from an immersion perspective.

Now, that does not mean it is an absolute favorite and also does not mean that people will not have issues with execution and other potential effects (more time to have mods out, performance, etc)

What I can say that, besides the visuals in character-related features that you have seen so far (and a few others that we have yet to cover) they are not as present as they are in other games like Vicky or CK3. This is not a game focused on characters or pops, they are supporting elements in Project Caesar.

tbh I think hating on the 3D stuff is pretty niche and adding an option like this is pretty pointless. If someone really doesn't like 3D characters I don't think that'll kill the game for them, they'll just get used to it.

Since character interactions appears to be a key part of diplomacy I doubt that simply having an option to disable them would make everyone happy.
