I was preparing a big write-up filled with constructive feedback on how to improve the 3D portraits within the current system.

I have been working on it for the last few days, doing research, making mock-ups ect. And it's a bit disheartening to see all discussion about 3D artwork get merged into a thread that is relatively unconstructive and revolves around 2D vs 3D.
Please still do it! No matter what it still will be a great feedback to the devs

Update from my community poll;

Interesting results, I expected a cohesive plurality for 3D, but I certainly didn't expect the moving 3D portraits from gilded destiny to be the most popular of the 2D options.

Thanks for running that poll lambert, appreciate it.

Well, based on the poll, it appears that 57% of EUIV players will simply not buy EUV for committing this cardinal sin.

And 43% likes them, so the players are divided and no side can claim that their option is the only one players want. And poll says nothing about buying the game. Let's be honest - even those who hate 3D portraits will still buy it. The temptation is too strong. They will put a tape on their screen where the 3D portraits will be and grind their teeth but they will still play.
Some do, they have bad taste :^)
Or maybe are not stuck in the nostalgic past and have no problem with embracing change.

Yeah, I was kidding. Aside from a couple people, I doubt anyone is going to ignore the game for this reason alone.

I'll make a thread, and if it gets merged, I'll delete it and move the discussion somewhere else.

This thread is a not good place to have a discussion about improving 3D portraits, it was originally a thread called 'please don't add 3D portraits'.

It's like talking about how to make a nice cup of tea on the 'I hate tea and only want to drink coffee' thread.

So a coalition gov against 3d portraits forms

If this is the change you hope for, I'm not sure what game you want

Looking forward to that thread, and I think that warrants a separate thread than the eternal tug of war containment zone

God please don't make yet another thread on this. Its honestly not that hard to give sensible feedback on the 3D portraits. What makes it hard is that any sensible discussion is overwhelmed by a handful of people convinced that 3D portraits are the harbinger of the casual apocalypse. Sensible feedback goes something like:
  • The game will have 3D portraits. Most people prefer that. So we'll get over that and provide useful feedback.
  • 3D models are an excellent way to implement the DNA system. So we like that.
  • There is a risk of the uncanny valley effect. Paradox has been trying to avoid that by using the more cartoonish approach commonly taken in game design. The cartoonish approach hasn't gone down very well with some paradox fans. Instead, it would be worth exploring painterly effects for the portraits (refer previous example by Lambert), and many see that as more fitting of the period.
  • There is also a risk around some edge cases where extreme characters can look odd (too thin etc). It might be worth toning down edge case settings - but that is really a bug, not a systematic issue.
  • No-one like Vicky3 babies. They should be overhauled. They scare some people.
  • Separate to portraits, there is an objection to the wasted UI space that can sometimes accompany portraits. This is a UI issue, but the need for clear, scalable UIs (very important) should also be balanced with a preferences for lots of information being present on the spreadsheet UI (also very important).
  • 3D does make modding more difficult. There is perhaps some more work to do around modding tools now that we are in 2024 and games are more complicated than in 2004.
Something like that.

I have a feeling you are going to like my thread then, it covers those topics and more and has suggestions on how to mitigate or overcome the problems.

I would be very interested in your opinions on it after I have posted it.
