Castor and Pollux

Here is what I am planning on doing with the minelayers. My plan for this is to effect to effect the following minelayers

France
Castor
Pollux

United States
Oglala
Aroostook

These are the minelayers which were specifically mentioned in the 1930 London Naval Limitation Treaty. IGNORE THIS PARTThey will be model 4 (auxilliary cruisers) with small attack and variable defence ratings based on their size. The larger the vessel the higher the defence. This is due to their nature. They were basically merchant vessels with a little bit of additional protection. Hopefully, this will be satisfactory to everyone. MDow

EDITTING NOTE:
Just played a quick game and noticed the US land a division of troops from the Oglala. Not good. In reflection they will be model 0 cruisers. They will have an attack rating of 1 and a defence of 3. That should make them useful but not powerful. Sorry about the confusion. MDow

I was under the impression the Castor and Pollux where purpose built minelayers! I guess I was wrong, though I wonder why they'd keep a non-purpose built ship since 1917

Here's something about Uruguay's navy which I found a bit odd as it's bigger then I expected. If anybody has any info it would help:

The Uruguayan navy possessed one small battle ship, a surveying vessel, three fairly modern patrol vessels, two training ships, and a small number of minor/auxiliary ships

What exactly was this battleship? Do they mean the Uruguay? And what where these training vessels?

Some of the first amphipious landing ships made by the US during WW2 were actually first designed as Minelayers. Some others were originally net layers. Check out this site http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/amphib/ and clikc on LSV2 Ozark down to LSV 6 Montauk.

Id your planning to add Minelayers to the game, I can assist with the German tech tree minelayers.

Minelayers have been in the game for a while now and do not get seperate tech. Smaller minelayers are usually represented as 500t destroyer flotillas or MTB flotillas while larger ones are put in individually as sloops or the new treaty sloops.

They were purpose built, but they weren't built to warship standards. They are contemporaries of the US Oglala and she was sunk at Pearl Harbor (Harbour?) by a torpedo which stuck the cruiser alongside. Because of their wide open internal spaces for carrying mines, and their light construction, they had the damage resistance of large merchant vessels.

I think when they say battle ship that is the same as warship. If I remember my spanish correctly it might have been Barque de Guerra or ship of battle. Might be the explination. They did have the gunboat (sloop) Uruguay in 1936. They had a couple of 180 ton patrol boats that they built in 1935. They got rid of the cruiser Montevideo which had been the Italian protected cruiser Dogali of 2050 tons and 6 152mm (6 inch) guns. As for the training ship, I can only imagine that it is the presidential yacht 18 de Julio. Hope that helps. That is all of the information that I have on the Uruguayan Navy. MDow

We don't have mine warfare in HoI. The program just won't allow it. We are putting some of the large minelayers into the game as very weak cruisers. This is due to the fact that they could have been used for convoy escort or other non-frontline duty because of their size and light armament (4x100mm guns). At the time being there are no plans to put mine warfare into CORE because of the inability of HoI to support it or our ability to simulate it :(. Sorry. Feel free to assist anywhere else though. MDow

Becuase I haven't downloaded the latest version of CORE, I wondered have you guys included the large Soviet minelayers like "Marti" (6000t.; 4x 130mm guns, etc.)?

Marti is in the Soviet Northern Fleet in Murmansk. I think the Amur is in Lenningrad. When 0.81 the French Castor and Pollux will be in Brest and the US Oglala and Aroostook will be Los Angeles. MDow

"Marti" was converted in 1933-1936 and was always in the Baltic fleet (so I suggest Leningrad, instead of Murmansk)
"Amur" was the name of the former cargo ship, that was converted in 1936-1937 to the Soviet minelayer "Argun" and was part of the Pacific fleet (so I suggest renaming to Argun and moving it to Vladivostok).

I will try and get the Marti moved for 0.81 but I can't make any guarentees at this point. As for Amur whe was a purpose built minelayer which was built shortly after the Russo-Japanese War (1907 I think) to replace a vessel of the same name which was sunk by Japanese mines. She was a sister ship to the Yenisei which was sunk in World War I (1915). As far as I know, she was always in the Baltic. MDow

Out to Sea

I figured that I would let people know that I am going to be out to sea for the next three weeks and might be a little slower in responding to questions and comments. If you have something that you don't want to wait for me to get to an internet connection fast enough to download the forum (it is big) e-mail me at dow underscore mike at hotmail dot com. Just make sure you put the word CORE or other identifier in your e-mail so it doesn't get tossed as junk :D. MDow

If you need any information on the Kriegsmarine, feel free to ask.

I can also help with the Japanese and Italian navies to a lesser extent.
