I have a technical problem that I need your help with please.

Game Version & Patch (incl. publisher):
CK NA 1.04a

OS & build/SP:
Windows 98 (4.10, Build 2222)

Computer, CPU & speed:
Gateway with AMD Athlon 750 MHz

RAM:
128 MB

Free HDD space:
1.6 GB

Video (brand, model, driver, memory):
NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 nvdisp.drv 31.5MB

Sound (brand, model, driver):
Creative SBPCI Direct Sound Driver SBPCI.VXD

DirectX Version:
8.1 (4.08.01.0881)

Other:
Don't think it's relevent, but I recently re-installed my operating system and I'm now having a major problem with Outlook Express.

I read the stickies but I still have the following problem:
When I try to load a saved game, I get a CTD, no error message. I just got CK recently. First time I played briefly, saved, and was later able to load the saved game and continue playing. After that session, however, when I tried to load the new save, it crashed. The autosave also crashed, but I was able to go back to the old autosave and it loaded fine. Now, however, my most recent save, the autosave, and the old auto save all refuse to load. The game itself loads fine. When I click on a saved game, there seems to be an unusually long pause before the shields come up to select my country. Once the shields do come up, I can click on mine, and I get the correct portrait and shield on the right side of the screen. When I hit start, the loading screen comes up, and the bar starts to turn green, but right before the green gets all the way to the right, the game crashes back to desktop.

I don't know if this is in any way relevent or helpful, but I normally have my task bar very small and at the botton of my screen. When I get this CTD, when the loading screen vanishes, the task bar appears in roughly the same place the bar was on the loading screen (about 1/3 the way up from the bottom). Then the screen flashes black, and when it comes back, the task bar is in its normal position.

Please help me fix this, or the game will be unplayable for me. :(

Right off the bat I would say your system is below spec.
128 meg is streching the limit and your DirectX is under spec, the game requires 9.0 or higher.

You can try these things:
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

If they don't work:
Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

You may also want to check out jpds FAQs in the Victoria Tech support forum, they apply equally to CK.

So far, renaming the AVI file seems to have done the trick.

I was wondering about the system requirements, though. The box says minimum 64 meg and 128 recommended. I know you have to take minimum listed requirements with a grain of salt, though. What I was really wondering about was the Direct X. The box says 8.1 required, and when I installed the game, I got a message that said "Crusader Kings requires Direct X 8.1. Do you want to install Direct X now?". I knew that I already had 8.1 so I said no. If it requires Direct X 9.1, why didn't it offer to install 9.1 instead of 8.1, and how can I get 9.1?

You can update your DX 9.0c at the windows update site.

Don't know why it has 8.1 on CD. must be left over from old installer.
You would most likely not have trouble unless you were MPing.

Also IIRC Win98SE or better is also required.

But if you have it working that is great.
For performance boosting the jpd FAQ I refered you to is a good start, especially the tile file.

Well, I thought it was working, but eventually I got the same problem--after a while, my saved games wouldn't load anymore.

I think I may not have all the background stuff turned off. Can you give me specific instructions about how to check?

I had upgraded to DirectX 9, as you had said I should.

I looked at the corrupted save file, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for. If what info there is bad can be identified, and there is any way to determine what the correct information should be, then it should be fixable, but I didn't even know what to look for. I did notice that while most of the characters had a 14-digit number in the line DNA =, a few of them had a 20-digit number. Is this normal?

Is your Video card not an AGP?
I see AGP status is not available?

Regarding your save, I really do not have much experiance looking at CK saves.
Best to ask the DNA question in the Editing forum.

Now on to the save problem, Have you tried reinstalling the game and then just the most recent patch. Then start a new game and see if the problem persists.

I did not see the section above on your drives, do you have lots of drive space available?

Yes, I've re-installed the game, but I'm still using 1.04a, not the beta patch. I downloaded the beta patch, but when I started up the new game, it still says 1.04a in the corner.

I have about 1.6 gigabytes free space on my hard drive.

And when you started a new game after reinstalling. Could you save and reload it?

At first, yes, but after a few sessions, the problem returned.

Castellon said:

I have no idea. I don't even know what an AGP is.

AGP is type of bus among other things, the slot that an AGP card fits in looks different then regular PCI type cards/slots.

So you could tell by looking inside the case, or if you still have the bill around it should say AGP beside the description of the Video card.

I've got the invoice around here somewhere; I'll try to find it. I strongly prefer to not muck around inside the case.

Okay, it is most likely not the cause here anyway, but it would boost your performance big time if your card was capable.

I suspect that since you can play for some time with no problems then the problem develops, that it is a lack of memory.

With win 98 IIRC you want a virtual memory setting under 1Gig.

I am getting the same problem, except i am on win XP.

The game was fine an hour ago, then i installed the automatic update for windows, and when i restarted the computer my save game won't load :(

I can start a new game fine though.

Is there nothing that can be done to reserect it?

sorry, i forgot to add that i am using the latest beta.

As a side note, i only got the game the other day and have only played with beta's, and all of them have seemed more or less unstable, is this maybe part of the problem?

You can try these things:
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

If they don't work:

A save! A save! My kingdom for a save!

I have a problem which seems close to that originally described here.

Several of my saved games will not load, and the game crashes. The load status bar goes almost all the way to the end, where it still says "Reading Scenario" and then crashes. In other words it crashes near the end, but before it reaches the "Initializing Script" stage.

Some saves do this, some don't. I can't seem to find a common denominator.

I've been using version 1.04a. I'm now using 1.04 though since I reinstalled the game as an attempt to fix it (didn't work), and Paradox webstite seems to have been down yesterday so I had to get the best patch I could elsewhere. (I don't think there's much difference between them anyway.)

My computer is operating using Windows XP, with a 2.4 Ghz pentium processor and 128 MB of RAM. I don't know my video card information.

I probably need more RAM since the game is slow running. But I don't understand how this could affect loading a save.

I tried the previous suggestions, re-naming the avi file to avi-back, etc., but that did not correct the problem.

I wonder if this is a problem with the most recent patch since many people seem to be experiencing this problem and come to think of it, I had no problems loading saves until I upgraded to the 1.04 patch. It could be the previous games were incompatible with the new patch I suppose, but I was able to load them at first with 1.04, but when I saved again and tried to load, I had the CTD.

Memory: 126MB RAM
Page File: 224MB used, 154MB available

I think that tells the whole story.

Later patches could contain more info in the save file which would make you more suseptible to a crash.

Memory is very important in loading in a save, that is exactly what you are doing, filling up memory with data.

128 is no way to run XP.
you need 256 as a bare minimum, really 512 to have aceptable performance.

Also you have no where near enough virtual memory assigned to even try and make up the difference.

Wow.

XP and 128 RAM is what the system came with, so I guess Dell screwed me over on that one.

I had a feeling I had too little memory. Until I can upgrade, I will vastly increase the size of my page file.

Thanks.
