Just a slight veer off-topic for those of you who might be interested.

Crusader Kings gets a mention in Episode 36 of the Three Moves Ahead Podcast during their conversation about Tropico 3. Made my ears perk up it did.;)

Ugh. I listened to the entire podcast just for one mention of the game in an otherwise Tropico 3 dominated conversation. Having worked on the original Tropico when I was with T2 (or GoD/PopTop if you will) I have no desire to hear anything regarding Tropico ever again.

EU3: HTTT - CK's Spiritual Successor?

Since I don't think anyone knows if there will be a CK2 or not, I'm wondering what other CK people think about the upcoming expansion for EU3, EU3: Heir to the Throne. It's supposed to have a "dynasty" system (link) but I doubt it will come anywhere near the depth of CK's system. Also, it doesn't look like they will have any RPG elements for people? Such as Blind, Very Strong, Weak-Willed, Beautiful, etc?

Thoughts?

No in-depth dynasty system or character traits, that's right. It's also in a completely different timeframe and has a different orientation in terms of gameplay. Really not very comparable at all.

I'm very upset they couldn't even include a very basic family tree. When you read between the lines, it's mostly an auto generated heir just like before, except now you can see his/her name.

I was very sad :(.

I still hope for CK2. As someone in the forums said, the dinasty sistem to be in HTTT seems more like a superficial paste-in.

The expansion is not even 1/4 of what it should be in order to deserve the name... but thats judging from the dds...

I agree. I don't want to turn this thread into an anti-HTTT rant, but again I and I think quite a few others were hoping for a family tree at the very least. They said they didn't want to make EU3 into CK or dynastic focused, which is entirely fair, so I understand the lack of traits and I never even expected any traits. I just wanted a family tree like in EU: Rome, purely for flavour.

Well, again I can only say oh well. It's still better than nothing, and at least they were honest enough to tell us all of this rather than hide the details.

I remember reading for HTTT that there could be "succession wars" between people if no one has a strong claim to the throne. Since I haven't played HTTT being that it's not out yet, it's hard to judge if it's good or not. I was hoping for a CK overlay on top of it since it delt with dynasties, but from the way it sounds it's not deep at all. The "heir" you get is just basically a name with a few stats, and what their current standing is for the throne. I guess it could be considered a light hybrid between EU and CK, like.. a 80/20 ratio, more EU than CK. But, that's just hoping :D

Basically its like it always been, except rulers get one more stat called for their claim to the throne ;_;

But oh well, the other features of the expansion shall make up for that, I hope~

Well, looks like they get these stats..

heir = {

name = "Henry"
monarch_name = "Henry VIII"
dynasty = Tudor
birth_date = 1491.6.28
claim = 95
adm = 7
dip = 7
mil = 7

}

Which is taken from the page I linked up above. Name, Monarch Name, Dynasty, Birth Date, Claim, Admin, Diplomacy, Military.

At the least I wished it would have traits and flaws.

Well new on that list are Dynasty, Birth Date (atm you can only see date when he took control of the country) and Claim.
But really i never hoped for much of CK things in it , HTTT adds so many other features to the game that, to me at least, it looks like its gonna be best expansion so far.

My only wish is that when/if they decide to do CK2 they actually put some real work into it and not just put CK into new engine.

H3T just looks like Paradox stole the magna mundi mod and are selling it for a profit - i don't think I have seen any feature in the new XP that MMP hasn't in one way or another tried to represent.

And as for CK2 , I am frequently saying on all boards that EU: Rome has the basic framework there for an excellent update of CK.

Tried to represent. Paradox WILL represent. There's a big diference between the same thing made by the community, and by the developer. MM made by professionals would muuch better. Why? Because of the resources.

What features do you wish CK had?

CK is a good game in it's own right, but what features do you wish CK had?

- Dukedom/Kingdom level events, civil wars and rebellions with goals. Such as trying to change the religion, and other major events.

- Front view of faces, similar to that of Rome for example.

- Visual family tree, even if it's only about 4-5 levels. Tells the years that they lived, along with portrait, and what position they had.

- Graphically updated map, make it more lively.

- Trade system with other nations.

- Ship combat and blockade ability.

- Deeper religious system for Catholic nations. Ability to have your archbishops become cardinals, and from the pool of cardinals a pope is chosen.

- A variety of monarchy structures, such as absolute monarchy, semi-constitutional monarchy, constitutional monarchy, personal unions, etc. Each with their own perks and drawbacks.

- Deeper intrigue among your dynasty events. Someone poisoning your king/heir? You participate in a battle that your army lost, only to find out it's because one of your family gave them your battle plans? You find out that the heir isn't really from the King's blood, but rather from incest with her brother (Game of Thrones anyone?? :rofl:) and the list goes on.

Anyhow, just sitting here while watching tv and thinking about CK. Basically just a rant.

*What I would really like to see is to be able to play Pagans, Muslims and Jews. Especially Pagans would be very interesting to play as.

*Pagan religions should be more divided. It's not really realistic that Pagans from Sweden have no friction with the Turkish Pagans.

*Cruel and alike traits that makes you lose Piety for being ''Evil'' shouldn't make you lose piety as Pagans. For example Asatron(Viking mythology) encouraged war and alike.

*Expand the map into Asia. China and India were far more technologically advanced then Christian nations. Also, who wouldn't want to be able to play as Mongols earlier?

*Expand the map a little North. It's close to impossible to see Iceland and northern Norway, Sweden and the Kolan penisula.

*Muslim religion divided into Sunni and Shi'a(No, not just the traits!)

*Ships, we need boats. Though perhaps not as major as in other Paradox games, the vikings for example had some interesting naval fighting.

*Greenland! We need to go to Greenland and somehow colonize it.

*Some kind of trade system. The spice route from India were very important and brought alot of riches to the muslims.

*A better way to convert provinces than events. It's kinda annoying to have 10000 gold and 100 wrong-religion provinces and you can't do nothing about it. What I'm proposing is a Eu3 system, with missionaries attempting to convert provinces.

*Okay, this might sound a little weird, but maybe nations can build some kind of wonders? Every culture would have it's own building. It would take at least 50 years to finish and 50000 gold, but when it's finished, +50% gold, 10% yearly prestige and 10% yearly piety or something like that. This would not be a first-hand thing to do though, maybe when Paradox got some time over?

*Like others said, earlier start date. No more comments from me on this.

*Population number, it would really be interesting to see how many lived here and there at that time. Plus, maybe it could be like Eu3? Increasing over time and have some effect on how many soldiers you can raise from the province and base tax.

*Country selection screen should be as the Eu3 one,where you look around the world and the click on a nation to play it, instead of having you select countries from a list.

*Time should be like Eu3 also, where instead of scenarios you could decide exactly what century, decade, year, month and even day by adjusting some numbers.

*If the map would be expanded into Asia, then some events for the Jihad of India would be interesting.

Sigh, so many ideas for a game that will never come.

Good list :D

So why don't you think it will ever come? Don't think that the original CK sold enough to warrant a sequel? If that's the case, the developers could always take the idea behind CK and re-wrap it with a different name, additional features, and basically a newer experience.

The entire idea behind CK is a great one, it's one of the few games where I actually care about whats happening to my character and family. I like how the pyramid system basically works in it, you have the counts, then dukes, then kings/emperors. If your a high and mighty king you'll have to worry about diplomatic relations, rival armies, as well as keeping your vassals pleased so your kingdom doesn't come crashing down.

*Country selection screen should be as the Eu3 one,where you look around the world and the click on a nation to ply it, instead of having you select countries from a list.
This is something I wanted in the game too, it makes finding what you want to play a lot easier.

*Population number, it would really be interesting to see how many lived here and there at that time.
I like this idea, because it's another factor to consider when you wage war. If you create large armies and they are defeated, not only did you lose the battle, it has longer lasting effects.. such as less income from your provinces that you raised the army in because you just killed off a few thousand people that would otherwise be working and paying taxes.

Ships, we need boats.
I agree. The ability to blockade, warfare, and piracy come to mind. During these times you heard a lot about privateers who take advantage of wartime situations for their own ends. Your King is at war with France? Build a fleet and start looting. This could also impact your relations, say with Spain.. your working hard trying to have a relationship with that country and in the meantime one of your vassals is turning a hefty profit from pirating their ships.. but on the same token he's paying "extra" money per tax period. So you have to decide, more money or continuing to improve your relations with that country.

I was also thinking that adding suffix titles to your character would be nice if they excel for a long period at a specific thing, such as having tons of piety they might be known as Richard the Pious, or Richard the Blessed, and etc.

They could also add a system where you can "knight" people, but it takes a bit of prestige. Basically your transferring your prestige to a family member or court member who you find is valuable, and with that it may give them a slight bump in stats or something, make them more loyal, etc.

Possibly giving the game a more descriptive name so that people would more likely know what it is would be better too. Right now "Crusader Kings".. if I were to hear it without reading it, I would just think it had something to do with the Crusades, yet it feels more like the game is more based on your dyansty/family/people. If "Heir to the Throne" wasn't taken in another Paradox expansion, that would have been a good one.

Aside from the Pope declaring a crusade and you participating, there could be armies marching through europe, which could be a unit with a giant cross behind it, which takes a random path towards their destination. While their on the march, they gobble up resources, randomly pillage your land, reduce your county standing temporarily, reduce your population, etc. Even some of your advisors may take the call and leave. Also add the addition of islamic nations declaring a jihad which attack christian nations.
