I just tried this out:
basic rule to join the Empire is to have less then 201 total dev (because basically for every dev you need one opinion with the emperor to join)
Now in the beginning poland starts with 183 individual development which would be enough to join but their vassal pushes your dev up to 201 wich is too much.
what I did is exploit dev in all your provinces which will eventually reduce your dev below 200, then I think I needed 180ish opinion with austria which should be doable if you gift them money etc.

all you need is now "bad" RNG to get the PU over lithuania as late as possible so that you can join bevor getting lithuania.

That is quite nifty!:)

It prevent the AI for declaring war for a year and it gives +20 reason to join your war.

I think the AI also stops drilling and some other war preparation stuff!

If I core one province next to my vasall, will I get my full coring range added to that province?

for example:
I am Hungary and couldnt core in England.
Now for some strange reason Brittany becomes my vasall and I core 1 province next to Brittany. Could I now core something like Hamburg, because my province next to Brittany + coring range?

Indeed; It's a very nice tool for when you are landlocked. Like if you start as any tag in Asia, get down to Malaysia and vassalize Sunda and expand from there. Or go into Manchuria and become Manchu. Countries like Hisn Kayfa suddenly becomes alot easier.

I don't remember the exact formula how the AI determines military strength (it might be on the wiki? not sure) but it takes things like General pips, morale, manpower, FL etc into account. Do you only have the Ottomans as ally? consider allying as many other Great powers as you can, even if they are on the other side of the world and cannot realistically help you (the strength calculations dont take that into account!)
I always max out my diplo slots with as strong allies as possible to avoid AI DoW's. Look for allies who themselves have alot of other allies, as that indicates they tend to be more stable and not gonna be jumped by others as easily ( = being a drag on you :D )

Also be aware that at some point when the AI has made up its mind its gonna jump you, no further deterrence is possible and they will attack no matter what, even if strength ratios change.

It seems to me that a successful Portugal wants to form Spain. Due to the missions, the age bonuses, and relative strength of ideas, does it make the most sense to try and form Spain as Portugal in time for the "Spanish Tercios" age ability?

I would try to do it as early as possible since once Castille gets PU on Aragon it gets substantially more difficult. If you are lucky France & Aragon hates Castille at gamestart; use them to bash their head in :)

I'm playing as Oman into Mughals to complete the Third Way Achievement and feel like I'll be running out of time to convert all the provinces I need, I have 5 missionaries. I've gotten Jerusalem and Medina, and have Religious ideas taking the remaining Sunni provinces are a problem for me even if some are in New world or Held by colonizers. I'll probably do a separate post showing screenshots. But my questions are

1. How can i increase my missionary strength i may be overlooking I havent done a one faith and usually just take humanist to negate unity problems

2. Besides Rome is there any other way I can get more missionaries

3. Unifying islam decision requirement are listed strange do I need to hold all Muslim provinces to unify or just the ones listed.

This covers all the Missionaries you can get

Remember to use the "Propagate Religion" ability in Trade Company Regions.

How do guarantees work?
If I play as a powerful nation and I would like to call dibs on one of my war subjects, how do I guarantee and then revoke just in time?

Revoking the guarantee creates a 5-year truce with the target.
If you are desperate and can eat the AE, you can break the truce and declare war anyway.
You can also try and Send Warnings to any neighbours to prevent them from declaring.

Another avenue is to try and vassalize the smaller country diplomatically.

It used to be possible to go from Republic to Monarchy by just tanking your Republican Tradition. Does this still work or do you have to wait for the last government reform no matter what ?

It should still work; I do not believe that has changed.

Savescumming is still possible in ironman, it's just a bit more difficult. (Save. Do the test. If you need to reload: alt-tab, open task manager, force-quit EU4, launch EU4, load the game.)
So unfortunate that my game crashes when a terrible heir is born!
