Re: VNET NOT WORKING

V1.06 is coming out in July and as part of this there will be a major rework of vnet which ought to solve the problem for good. So perhaps another couple of weeks and then we are sorted.

Wow, thanks for the news. I must say I'm very much looking forward to 1.06. Especially per the centralization issue. It'll now finally present a challenging decision. :D

Anyway, the problems with VNET might be responsible for some of the chat crashing, in my experience. What we've noticed, and this may or may not have been reported as a bug, is that often times when loading from a save (not an original scenario file), all players have to reclick on their shields once everyone has downloaded the save file, or else some players will be 'undefined' at game start, at least in the perspective of some of the later-downloading players. When first they attempt to chat, they'll experience a nasty CTD. Hopefully this is fixed in the new VNET.

Visit ipchicken.com to find your IP if all else fails :)

14) What speed to do you play at? Most people play at 2 months to one minute. This seems to work well for groups of 3-5 players. I have recently used 1:1 for 7-8 player games and it was very stable indeed.
i only ever played MP via LAN at home and never thru VNET nor IP, and we usually play at 8 months to 1 minute. so i m wondering, do u ever get to play a game to the end with 2 months to 1 minute? coz we never even play pass 1600 with that speed. we get bored for playing the same game too long and start a new one.

8:1 ? How do you fight wars? I cant even fight them at 2:1

To the end? Yeah sure.

Bored? Oh no :) There are far too many things going on my games that already keep me awake at night *chuckle*

well, just how i normally fight them:confused: with 8:1, ur troops still take around 10 seconds to move from one province to the next, providing they usually take around 20 days, (mathematically/theoretically it would be 6 seconds, but usually it's slower coz ur computer seldom run that fast, and in MP it would be worse). if u play 2:1, it would take around 30 seconds for troops to move from one province to another (theoretically it's still 20 seconds).

now, to me (and my friends), i really dont need that much time/delays to manage even if u are fighting in a number of provinces simultaneously. reorgansing armies may a bit take longer, but i dont do it that often, and i can live with 1 of 2 days in the game lost. Even raising troops dont take a few seconds of clicking the mouse. Now, at critical moments, when thinking time is really needed, like whether u should DoW, or when u r deciding whether it's the right time to sue for peace, etc, it's pretty ok for someone to pause for half a minute or one minute or even 2, but we dont need that much time other than those moments.

Maybe bcoz we dont play the warmongering style, like we dont constantly go to war, we usually go to war when it is the best opportunity and usually that would be a very critical war involving many nations. after the war we would be usually expanded by half or twice the size, then we have a few decades of peace recovering and looking for other opportunities for expansion.

Now, during those periods of peace, sometimes i would be even having trouble finding something to do with a speed of 4:1. i mean, theres really little to do other than sending merchants (some even use the auto send, but i dont), signing trade agreements, and have some useless royal marriages just so u wont waste the diplomats. of course, that excludes playing colonising nations like spain, france and england, which we dont play usually play, coz they r too strong.

So u really play to the end? how long does it take? mathematically with a speed of 2:1 it would take 40 hours to play 400 years, and practically it would probably be 1/2 more than that. so if u play 8 hours a day everyday it would still take a whole week to completely finish a game.

boredom is not even the important thing. i mean, i just dont have the amount of time to play till the end under that speed, with 8:1 it still takes around 2 days for us to finish 100 years, and we play perfectly ok with 8:1. Perhaps its just different play styles.:)

I predict that a major part of the difference in playing styles is that you are playing over a LAN where lag is nearly non-existent. Once you are lagging a few days (or even a week) on a regular basis, and instant reactions are a joke, the speed issue becomes really important. :)

Hey there,

I am impressed at the speed at which you fight wars; I dont think I know anyone else who could do this in large competitive MP games.

The games that I play only use the large powers but we dont tend to AI bash and 'meet in the middle' or constantly go to war, most of the people that I generally play with are fully capable of understanding the dangers of allowing anyone to do this and thus we live in a kind of security system that is often akin to the cold war period.

Yep it takes a long time but its worth it and yes at times I wish it would go faster.

I'd be interested in a couple of your save games to see what sort of play your style develops. Perhaps you could email me with one? And I'll send you the 1612 of our latest game.

Thanks

ok i'll try to send u one. i cant get hold of my computer now so cant send u yet, and i m going overseas so would be very busy the following week, but might get time to send u a save game.

i agree with peter that its probably coz of the different nature of a LAN game from an internet game, and perhaps the fact that i dont play the large powers. i our games, we usually dont start that close to each other, coz we r small (usually around 3 province nations) and need to expand for a while b4 starting to be competitive, sometimes even cooperate to expand initially. but by the time it starts becoming competitive usually around 1500s, we start to have one of those busy times and not able play the game for 2 or 3 weeks, so that we forget what we have done in our previous games, and want to start a new one again. thats always the pattern, so we never finish a game to the end.

but we might try playing one of the big nations and see if it would be anything different.

Nope it will be the one when the Austrian player 'vanished' off the face of the planet.;) :)

Sun_Zi_36, interesting. Because we dont play AI bash, games at the faster speeds would be pointless for us I guess. I design my games for maximum human interaction and thus the potential for greater intrigue and conflict with players is increased.

Although having said all this I might have a go at 2:1 this evening.

Could someone please elaborate on the 56k issue? I happen, unfortunately, to live somewhere where 56K is still the fastest available...

It works fine, go ahead and play. Experience has shown me thats its the software not your connection speed which is the issue.

However, it can get laggy when you have a 56K modem and your host is a long way away. So the occasional pause is a good idea.

Last night I played with a 56ker on a Pentium 2 (we are both in the States) and he only lagged once. It is a matter of having a good host and a fast machine helps alot (though I don't know how he worked on P2:rolleyes: ). As long as you play with just North Americans you should be fine.

Ah, okay.... I've got a P4/1600 running XP; they just haven't run the cables far enough out into the suburbs for me to be able to get either DSL or a cable modem yet...

That should work. Check the stickied ICQ Index to find a nice list of players that are looking for games.
