Istanbul Taskizak and Golcuk are two separate naval arsenals. When Istanbul and the Turkish Straits (Bosphorus and Dardanelles) were demilitarized after WWI, most of the arsenal was moved to Golcuk (Kocaeli, close to Izmit) but following the Montreaux Treaty of 1936, the Straits and Istanbul was militarized again, leading to Taskizak operate as a separate naval arsenal.
According to an agreement with Germania Werft (Germany), two submarines; "Atilay" and "Yildiray" were constructed in Taskizak Tersanesi in 1939.
However the bulk of the arsenal capacity remained in Golcuk and Taskizak operated as a repair / upgrade facility and focused on the construction of smaller vessels.
Golcuk Tersanesi (Arsenal) on the other hand was a sophisticated naval base with a shipyard capable of building destroyers, frigates, torpedo boats and submarines.
