How common was it for those of Byzantine culture to castrate and/or blind their prisoners? In the game it seems that no one ever leaves a Byzantine prison without one or the other.

Blindness has now been made a Health trait, but should blind characters be able to lead troops and/or fight duels on the battlefield?
A blind king of Bohemia John the Blind 1310-1346 did lead his troops in several battes, so why not?

"It's so dark down here. I can't see a thing."
"Oh no. What a nightmare..."
"Sorry."

Back on topic: I imagine letting blind people fight duels (or at least penalizing them for choosing to run away) is probably a bit silly. But I'm not totally sold on preventing them from leading troops though, since I could imagine a commander might only need to have events described. A handicap, to be sure, but not the worst.

Blinded characters should not be penalized for running from a duel. You wouldn't take morale damage for doing that as a commander known to be blind, and you certainly shouldn't run a chance at getting the craven trait for it. Maybe your duel opponent just ought to recognize that you are freaking blind and, rather than fight a duel, simply choose to spare you or slay you where you stand.

The Duel Engine should simply not target blind characters in the interim. Assume they're relatively safe behind the lines. Immediate problem solved.

I agree. I'm not so disturbed by them leading troops as by a message saying, "You see a foe across the field...." Uh, I actually don't see anything. And I certainly am not going to charge him.

Please ask jordarkelf to add support/consideration for blinded characters in his next update of the New Duel Engine, in its thread here. The NDE update will be directly integrated into PB.

There doesn't even have to be a historical precedent, although that is really interesting. Effective high-level command, in truth, is only limited by blindness in, well, the difficulty of reading maps. The rest is management, morale, and cunning tactics. Field commanders would be taking care of all the actual visual coordination during an in-progress melee in any case, blind leader or not. Only a few nobles of the minimum rank represented by CKII fit that sort of role, aside from the exceptions where aristocrat warriors insisted on leading their own levies personally.

Sure, but did he actually engage in personal combat?

If he had attempted so, it would've surely been his last attempt.

Definitely, I'm a proponent of a) allowing blinded commanders, and b) the Duel Engine treating blindness appropriately, though it's an annoyingly rare case for which to add extra text, so it should simply not target blinded characters and let them enjoy a relatively risk-free life leading troops (seriously, we're talking about very few blinded characters leading armies here).

Side note: Interestingly, now that it is a health trait, it can be cured by some events that cure illnesses. Hrm.

Anything that does:

Code:
cure_illness = yes

may very well beat blindness now. This may not be a permanent feature.

I can only find one event chain in vanilla which uses the "cure_illness" command, and that's an on_action event chain which only fires for mystics. Given the chances of actually getting that event are tiny, I'm thinking it's probably not a big deal.

Anybody else having an issue with duels/dueling? I'll get the popup that I'm about to fight someone 1v1 in war ("Prepare to die, lowborn scum!") and then it just skips over and acts like I was never going to duel anybody.
Yes. And there are also justing events popin up instead of actual duel events.

Guys Ive had this bug twice in seperate campaigns. My king dies in a holy war/crusade, and then his heir has no access to any grand hunt/summer fair/feast events or pilgrimages. Please help

another bug,Holy Wars end if the target dies...but not all the time

Is there an update scheduled for today? Since I've lost the save I was heavily invested in I don't want to start another game if there's going to be new files.

It is worth noting that save-game compatibility is always a top priority for HIP mods, and you will be notified whenever compatibility will break (and possibly provided alternative download links to the latest-compatible version for a period of time in that event). Users should rest easy on that front. That said, yeah, it's always good to start a fresh campaign on a fresh release.

I would one to add that for VIET I try to ensure that savegame compatibility is only broken - if it has to be - when a new major patch (ie the ones that come with major DLCs) rolls around. Only then do I do things that might break saves, like mess with the map.

The download has been replaced, fixing the following issues:
VIET:
-fixes an issue with the muslim invasion CB in PB VIET
-fixes an issue keeping Pisa, Genoa and the Papal States from being de Jure

PB:
Added a set of tiered conquest checks for the Imperial Reconquest CB under the "Is war possible?" menu. Now works for both PB and PB+SWMH (only the latter in the previous release)
