Not to sound an a..hole, but Align Hungary option is beyond unrealistic. Hungary would demand land concessions for it to happen. They would demand the entire Transylvanian part, and giving them half would mean they think about it... There is just no realistic way to it. It is similar, if you would add a tzarist option the Soviet Union, in which the communist could elect a new tzar.
If Romania would annex Hungary and release them, than they do have an option to release them as allies, but than Romania would claim the Eastern part of Hungary, which they also did after ww1 and which they also do now. And having a weak ally is not that useful. I would take out the Align Hungary option and add a Claim Eastern Hungary option.

What makes you think Hungary gets to have a say in the aligning part?

Thanks for the diary podcat.

There's some really bad blood in the comments today. I'm not really sure what more people want considering podcat a already said that they have since big AI announcements to make and that they will only comment on stuff that they feel is ready.

Is not like I don't have complaints and hopes for mechanics etc but this is the first dd of a major update, maybe we should see what they are come up with between now and release before panning the whole thing?

Normally Id agree with you in ... realistic timeframes.

1 year, where the main protagonist fails - again.
1 year, where the "what if nation..." doesnt work, since the "what" didnt work in first place
1 year with totally broken (AI) naval warfare
1 year with totally broken (AI) air warfare
1 year with...

I am sorry, that 1 year isnt realistic anymore. So yes its about time to dedicate parts of a dev diary on AI imrpovements.

Yes, I believe its about time.

That is under balance discussion. Personally, I would like countries to be more limited in research slots because it forces the player to make harder choices on where to put their focus, but if 4 is too harsh, we will go with 5.

I kind of like how it works in the generic tree here where the normal is 4 unless you can gain enough factories to be considered a major power, then you can get 5.

I think it is a Mareșal tank destroyer. I'm having trouble finding good photos, here's a model opened up:
tier-5-maresal-tank-insides.jpg

i thought it was just a hetzer

Is the tree finished yet? The Balkans dominance part looks really small compared to the greater romania one.

Well, it wouldn't look so unbalanced if New Zealand didn't get the ability to have a sixth research slot :p

There is no general research sharing, no. But you do get research sharing in various focuses, for specific topics. Allied Staff College gives tech sharing with the allies for land doctrines, for example.

Wait, do you mean they have a bonus in research time for a few amount of technologies, in the same way as you did with Italian, Soviet and Japanese common researches with Germany, or... is it a new mechanic giving you permanent common research for only one branch?

School seems to be closed earlier today...

Podcat mentioned !1! thing from a NEW DLC and you people are flaming "This is it???????? NF again?????" ? He did mention in the end something like "see you next week". Normally this would imply for more stuff...

AI is bad... but where did he say anything about not fixing it? Today's diary is part of the DLC. I am pretty sure, the "AI fix" is planed for the Patch. And i have to say, i understand the way how to present the diaries. If he would had post today "The AI Patch for 1.4 released in xxxx" 90% of the flames would be: "Give it now" "patch it now" "why wait for DLC" and bla, bla, bla...

You found out today about a new DLC with at least one more NEW NF... i don't get it really...

I (for myself) am happy to get a new Focustree and i am looking forward to now what else is going to be fixed. Thank you for your work.

It seems that they are getting it. Focus trees are boring not because of their content but by the very fact that a nation can make a choice that another won't be in a position to refuse : everybody is choosing strategies in parallel worlds without any interactions with the others' choices. I've only about 50 hours with the game because I cannot see why a choice I'm making is not changing the strategy of my adversaries. If I'm outsmarting them, outgunning them, sidelining them they should react accordingly instead of picking a random option in their tree as if nothing happened. If we have dynamic focus trees where the open options (and their effects) to choose next are also depending of the choice made by the other nations we can begin to think strategically and ponder our choices. Otherwise, it's not a choice but a blind shot.

Looking forward to the expansion. 300 hours so far out of HOI4, SP and MP. Pretty good value... though I'm greedy for more :p

Oh yeh, please fix the research juggling bug/exploit in the next patch! It gives 33-50% extra research if you use it...

Go to Steam workshop, download some mods and you have 5 improved focus trees. Then you are extremely happy.

Seriously calm down.

Nice update on Romania, but......Wow.

Not one word on what fixes you are working on to solve the issues players have reported since 1.3.3? Not even a list of issues you recognize need work on? You have got to realize this was not going to make some people happy.

First and foremost I appreciate the update for what it's worth and I fully expect more information coming about the bigger things that I'm sure the HOI4 team is chomping at the bit to tell us about.

But I agree with Meglok here. It's kind of ironic (or maybe their point was to soften the blow of a DD on Romania) that Podcat acknowledges the criticisms about the mixed reviews on TfV, (IE Most played nation = Germany, then Majors, then Minors. Minor's Focus Tree improvements ony matter to Majors when AI Historical Mode is off) then gives us a DD which is a focus tree for Romania (an interesting minor no doubt). So I think Meglok is right in expressing disappointment with this as their intro dev diary to 1.4 when some of us in the community are really hoping for and expecting something that is really going to affect the gameplay of the most played nations.

I think Podcat should have led off strong with something more substantial to please the community and get it excited about 1.4. Especially given the current sentiment in the community.

I don't get all the hate. Most of these comments are complaining that the game itself is broken(via ai, etc), and that the solution is to fix the ai and such not make more focus trees. But they can't put all of their people onto AI? This is a dlc patch, meaning they work on patch AND the dlc. Focus trees are going to be one of their selling points in their dlc. Therefore this dlc shows off one focus tree. I don't understand the problem?

Really hope that the changes will impact other playthroughs as well, especially curious to see how this changes the dynamics between the minor nations in the region.

Before release, I was hoping that the situation in Romania would be properly represented through game mechanics. Romania was not really able to develop the technology and industry for tanks and advanced artillery between 1936-1940 (and I doubt more time would allow it to fix the issues), not on its own at least. It lacked the know how and had low skilled manufacturers that were not able to develop such production lines (it could have translated into an efficiency penalty in the game, at least). The experience of the industry in the field of metallurgy was extremely limited. This or other types of limitations should be a feature for many minor nations as long as the player would have solutions to overcome these inconveniences. Romania was dependent on imports from the Skoda factories and others for their equipment, had difficulties negotiating licenses to produce on its own soil (and I mean it was brought up, but never materialised). However, it was able to develop the IAR-80, a decent fighter for the early war (a dynamic option in the focus tree might be useful, allowing the player to decide on which research path their country could make a breakthrough - I really hope something like this becomes a thing for many minor nations). In HoI3, this was sort of abstracted through the use of research points. A minor had to make sacrifices and focus on specific area of the military at first, but the obvious choice was always what the infantry needed, basically limiting the options further. So I'm really curious how this will be handled, waiting for the next update.

My hope is that it works something like: the minor nations will depend on collaboration with other minors to develop their tech tree. In the case of Romania, it should be their collaboration with Poland and others in the region. One works on aircraft, another on infantry and artillery advances and another on tanks and they export equipment to each other or if they join a faction, then they can share the tech as well. I'm not sure how this can be achieved since the diplomatic options are rather restrictive at the moment. Also, if the ability to develop advanced equipment depends solely on belonging to a faction at first, I hope there will be things you can do to overcome this, like grow in size and available military industry (maybe even consider the amount of resources that are exploited, if a country exploits a larger quantity of steel and oil, it should be able to then unlock a focus tree option and research the techs for a production line requiring those resources, so a minor that expands would eventually get similar options to the majors). Who knows... waiting for the update.

I understand now everything. Romania aligns his enemies, than declares war on its friends and as a final act they leave the alliance, so their friends can finish their allies/enemies.
A master plan. Romania is probably the Lex Luthor of the ww2 era. :D
