according to a google search on "genus species family". The "level" which mammalian, reptile, bird, fish etc. would fit into is Class. So i guess it would be Animal Class, Species class, Class species or something similar would be the most correct term.

EDIT: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxonomic_rank

Why class species? Mammals aren't a species.

If there are squid people though it breaks down. They are a seperate phylum. Same for fungus aliens.

Type is generic enough and can be completely arbitrary.

I now think there should an event ingame when you meet new aliens related to "Taxonomy Arguements".

Domain or kingdom is easily understood too. Though I agree that type probably is best due to different planets.
I am not sure that domain or kingdom would be that easily understood, because people don't really use taxonomical terms colloquially. In such situation I think it's better to be less accurate than misunderstood. Like when scientists have to "dumb down" their science for lesser people.

Even if it is misunderstood at first it will be easily learned. There are plenty of terms in PDS games which aren't used colloquially and might be misunderstood; yet they are still used. But as mentioned I like type better.

I agree, better to use a generic term than use a biological or taxonomic terms incorrectly.

Yes. I think 'seven playable kingdoms' would be even more misunderstandable...

Family is the best. It's a nod to taxonomy, while having a widely understood meaning.

The people that study taxonomy will not like the nod though, as treatings avians and mammals as family levels is incorrect.

I made a (bad) chart below attempting to classify the portraits we have on the Stellaris website. Them being on the same tree makes no sense (unless they evolved on the same planet) and I just based it on how they look like. For all I know the avians people are like the platypus or something.

'Seven playable families' is misleading too ;)

The unidentified one is a fungus. You can see it in the name of the picture.

Unidentified is probably insectoidal race.

No. It's a fungus.
