Is the duchy of Ascalon open?

In principle, but Lotus is playing the Kingdom of Jerusalem and will no doubt DOW you instantly. And all good and godly rulers would of course support him in such an action. :)

What!? DoW a 4 year old child? The meanies. :p

Thanks. I had gotten one from Sterkarm but it seems it was a year off. Alot has happened in that year.

Looking it over I really would like to be Ascalon, even if you all want to pick on little children. :p

You'll just have to find out now won't you. :p

But don't worry, I have a plan to survive.

Leto, it is totally unreasonable and stupid to take Ascalon. If you have some plan to survive, it won't withstand the mobilization of all of Poland in order to help the King's brother. Know this: you will become a vassal of the Kingdom of Jerusalem (or be annexed totally) and it is ridiculous to have two players in the Kingdom of Jerusalem when the game focuses on the whole of Europe (if it were a Middle-east specific game that would be different, but it's not). Choose something else. Would have been nice to have you in Iberia or Scandinavia, but both those are a little late. Polotsk and Novgorod are still open in Russia, and I still believe we don't have a North German duchy (although this can spell nothing but trouble for me).

Although I wouldn't call it stupid, I'm inclined to agree with Sterkarm that it seems a little odd to take a duchy so clearly within the sphere of interest of a much more powerful Kingdom with strong allies. I, too, would urge you to take Novgorod or Brandenburg. Either one would add a lot to Baltic politics, which at the moment has only me and Sterkarm; whereas the Med, with no less than five players already (Castille, Apulia, Milan, Byzantium, Jerusalem) doesn't really need any more intrigue. Brandenburg could also be useful for the North Sea, which has Norway, England, and Flanders and would be all the happier for a fourth player. I'm sure both I and Sterk would be delighted to help you break free of our mighty German neighbour, as would my vassal Flanders; even Hungary and Milan might want to join in.

Another issue is whether our game can actually handle this many players. I certainly welcome our new guys if the game can remain stable, but I have to say, it might be better if you were prepared for disappointment. Perhaps, as a Plan B, our new players could consider starting another game? Four or so players should be viable if they are all in one region, and with the apparent revival of the CK MP community, more might join later on. I hope this doesn't become necessary, the more the merrier, but instability with many players is a fact of life.

Well, to help with stability, EVERYONE (each and every one of you) should shut down all processes possible (all processes that are not necessary to play CK or keep the comp connected to a network/the internet or to keep the computer working). I did this a couple weeks ago and I have no crashed since. Not once, except for one or two times when all the players crashed due to some bug, etc. Therefore, I recommend everyone do this and also de-frag their hard drive.

I second that. Make sure that you also unload your paging file before you defragment - commonly overlooked, but it can't be defragged while It's being used as virtual memory!

How would one do that?

I'm not sure in other operating systems, but in XP; Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > System > Advanced tab > (Performance)Settings button > Advanced tab > under virtual memory click 'Change' > Select primary drive and dot the radio box 'No paging file' > Click 'Set' > Ok, then reboot and defrag as normal. Reset paging file after defrag.

Sterkarm, Unreasonable? Stupid? Anymore stupid then taking a duchy in your area where I have to balance either the politics of You, Norway and Russia or You, Norway, and Germany? Lets go over this. Theres a player in England, Iberia, Russia, Scandinavia, Hungary, Italy(two actually), and Poland, I know I missed some because theres 12 and I only listed 8. Where exactly won't I be near another player? Besides Byzantine lands in Transoxania? Sorry if I don't wish to be Polotsk and at the whim of you and/or Russia with little or no way to expand except at the expence of either of you, Russia, or Germany or in a similar state in Germany. I really see no differnce between your choices for me and mine. In either case I'm near two powerful players, but in my choice I have room to expand not at the expence of a powerful Christian Kingdom, and importantly in my book as this is my first competitive MP experince, not at the expence of a player.

Or are you just miffed I don't wish to play into your hand?

King of Men, where exactly won't I be in the sphere of influence of one or more nations? Either of the Indipendant Russian Duchys I will be wedged between 2 or 3 powerful Kingdoms. Brandenburg is already part of one, and Milano seems to be starting touble for them alreay and it seems many other players would be interested in doing the same, I see no point in adding to it.

Ascalon, while in the influence and threat of the KoJ and their big brother does, in my book, have more options then others wedged between powerful players and powerful AI. With Ascalon, if a peace is reached, I can go into Egypt, Arabia, Basra, or even return to the fold. While a early confrontation with human players seem inevitable it is not impossible to survive(though recent tests with the AI seem to not go in my favor). This is my first competitive MP game and I'm already in a PBEM Diplomacy game, I don't feel like another as Polotisk, or Brandenburg, or who ever surrounded by a sea of Christian Europe.

If there is a concencus against Ascalon I will look else where, but until then I'm sticking to my guns.

I must say that I agree with KoM and Sterk about taking a german duchy. Central europe is lacking some strength. Even Bohemia would be cool (in spite of Poland taking two of the counties.)

Me too. The focus is on Europe, with a current power-vacuum in northern Germany. However I also recognize LordLeto's wish to play as the duchy of Ascalon.

I was using 'sphere of influence' as a euphemism for 'target area'. In northern Germany or southern France, although you would be neighbours with some powerful nations, none of them would have sworn to conquer you ASAP, as Lotus has stated he will do to Ascalon. Moreover, as I said, we really need another Baltic or North Sea player, while the Med is quite full already.

I would note that Milan is also a part of Germany; you do know that Germany is under AI control, right? Although powerful, they are hardly invincible, and all their neighbours want pieces of them; I myself, for example, have my eye on their Danish lands, which they have unjustly stolen from me. I know Flanders wants the Low Countries, Milan wishes to break free, Poland no doubt has his eye on the Bohemia-Silesia area, and both I, Poland, and the Rus might want to grab their Finnish lands. Even Byzantium has a border with them and might want to expand from Croatia.

Your point on free expansion is reasonably well taken, but I fear that's a consequence of joining fairly late : All the obvious expansion possibilities are already gone. As Ascalon, it's true that you could expand into the Middle East or Africa, but you would face stiff competition, both from Lotus as KoJ who would try to conquer you directly, and from Byzantium and the other Med powers, who would want to grab those rich lands for themselves. Germany, on the other hand, is to some extent a power vacuum; although many people want to grab pieces on the fringes, the center is open for Brandenburg to grab.
