Viking traders arrived to Ukraine before the invasion, so Peyeraslavl were founded as a small trading colony along the river. In this case, Belgorod's culture should be russian, but the city itself is controlled by the Kaganate.

Thanks for the input Vulfynn. Many of your points are very helpful but will take a while to implement.

On city names:
If I understand correctly the names you have given are most suitable for around 850, when the first scenario starts. However this mod is planned to go through until 1337 and since city names cannot change halfway through a game, the city names have to be suitable for the whole period 844-1337. Obviously many cities rose and fell during that time so we must choose the most important cities for the whole duration. You seem to know more than me on South East Europe's history though so I will take your advice here.

On greek cores/cultures:
Since core provinces have a great impact on how the AI acts, i don't want to give the Byzantines cores on places in the East yet or else it will create a crusade too early. We can use events to create cores when we want the expansions to occur, at the start we need them on Bulgaria.
Were Azerbaijan, Syria, Alexandria and Lebanon really greek in 844? My research says when the Abbasids took Azerbaijan many indigenous people left and the arabs became the landowners. Armenia will have it's own culture, it was not greek during this time.

On cultures:
I am going to give the whole culture system an overhaul. I would like suggestions on which major cultural groups to include. Based on the cultures used in MES and elsewhere i'm making a list (i will add to this over time):

(vanilla name) => (new name)

British Isles:
Gaelic => Celtic
Anglo-saxon => Anglo-saxon

Iberia:
Iberian => Castillian
Canary => Portuguese
Hawaiian => Catalan

Inspired by the work by Swert i thought it would be nice to make a 568-scenario (end of the migration period of the germans).

Europe

(countries, only the borders between the franks and their german neighbours need some few changes)

(culture setup)

Asia

(countries)

I think i'm done with the countries (only in India is an unknown region) and with most of the cultural set-up of Europe. Reading the comments of Vulfynn, i thought he could help me with the slavs in Europe. I don't know what cultures i should put into the Avar territories. Around the 6th century, the Polans were one of the first major tribes of the slaves and they lived in the Dniepr-region. Has anyone of you an idea who came along with the avars to central europe and where they settled?

Looks nice chefkoch. Although I doubt I will be able to include it in Medieval World as with the new cultures and countries names the text.csv file will be different. Feel free to start a new thread for it if you like. The maps i've seen from that period show tribes like the White Croats and Bulgars migrating around the Avars. But the Avars dominated most of the slavic and germanic tribes of eastern europe.

BTW where did you get those maps?

Yep, it can't be included. Not before the high council supports us with more tags for cultures, countries and religions. I included three new ones otherwise half of the world would be pagan and wars too easy.

Tha maps are from cool-toxic but they are from the first versions and some things are changed in the newer versions (e.g. the Caucasus-region) but it works for the most places. I'll upload them later that day but we should also ask c-t for new ID-maps.

Another shield you could/should change. The shield you're using for Saxony were used for Saxony under the Askanian and Wettinian dynasties from the 12th. century on.
This shield is the older one:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:Coat_of_arms_of_Lower_Saxony.svg

I just noticed that in your text.vsc, you're using THU and ZUL for Thuringia.

1. I know the Syria problem, but you MUST change the city names to greek in Anatolia, cause of their reclaimation. There were successful campaigns led by the Empire to reclaim Antiochea too!

2. There were greek inhabitants around Lake Van and the cities of Edessa, Antiochea, Aleppo, Palmyra were almost fully greek populated, even if Crusader Kings shows a different picture (except of Palmyra and Aleppo).

3. The Wlachs (please, rename Romanians to Wlachs) lived in Oltenia until the fall of the hungarian rule (check out: Bassarab, Charles I), but as a minority compared to magyars and alans.

4. For centuries, Livonians were minority compared to the finno-ugric Kurs, but soon after the defeat of the Knights at Grünwald, they became almost extinct, and they're a minority today. But until that, they were the greatest part of the population of Livonia (Kuronia)!

5. The tribal alliance of the Samoyeds was a powerful one. They've defeated even the varangians many times, and Novgorod was unable to conquer them for centuries.

And I ask your forgiveness for editing the 844.eug and province.csv files, 'cause I was unable to look at Anatolia until I renamed the cities and the cultures. Ankyra became Heracleia, because the town and the port on the map is in fact Heracleia! Edirne became Adrianopolis, Antalya->Attalea, Konya->Ikonion, (Germyan province)->Sardeis, Adana->Tarsos (because it was still a strategic port), Malatiya->Melitene, Bursa->Brussa. I have also changed Diyarbakir to Amida. I left Syria and Egypt alone, except of Aleppo (it became Antioch because of the port and it's strategic importance), Beirut (Changed to Tripolis for the same reason). In Armenia there were only one chage: Van became greek.

Other changes:
1. I have also redesigned the economic density, so Anatolia really became an area of strategic importance.

2. I left alone the cores (except of Antioch, Tarsos, and Melitene) for your would-be events.

3. Sycilia is now greek (Messana, Tarenton), but I left the Spartanid Naples for you to create, because of the coming Norman invasion.

4. Kaffa is now Theodosia.

Ideas:
1. Oh, and I think Khorasan is unplayable (crash), try to fix it!

2. The population is a mess, fix it too (some says that Constantinople was much greater in numbers than the Pala capital in India! This is just a rumor.).

3. The Livonian army must leave Aleppo! :rofl:

4. The Byzantine Empire only survived that era because it had a strong cavalry and naval doctrine! There were some free labourers too (like in... China!).

5. You better release updates (event files, gfx, db and config files) rather than new versions, because we can't wait any longer. :rofl: If you want some help, I could write stories for different nations, because that part of your mod is very buggy.

These all seem like reasonable changes.

I will get to the populations eventually. Initially i had that all capitals have 10,000 and all non-capitals have 5,000. Although now i've given Byzantium, Cordoba and Baghdad 15,000 and Xian 20,000 (they were the biggest cities of the time IFAIK). Obviously these are all wrong but for most provinces we don't know the populations and there are more important things to do first.

What do you mean Khorasan crashes? There is no country called Khorasan :confused:

Updates will come when they are ready. v1.01 was only released 10 days ago.
I don't seem to have as much time on my hands as you do. I have barely had time to implement many of your suggestions. I am working on the new culture system first. Feel free to write events and descriptions for different nations.

Very good. Although the average rating is 6.2, this is a little high. I might need to lower a few ratings.

it would be handy if you split north and south italian cultures based on the historical linguistic division
these still hold true even today, even in dialect form

Thanks for that Toio. I was already using the Benrath and Speyer lines although I was wondering about the line for Italy, i didn't realise Tuscany was south. What about Corsica and Sardinia though?

pgroves: Play the 844 scenario, the 1066 scenario is in an alpha state really. Barely anything has been done except places a few countries really.
