I may have missed an individual or two or a small family but these are the last of the Roman/Byzantine related characters I've added apart from the Attilids. I was thinking on posting the history files during the weekend but since I'm done, I may tidy my notes and sources a bit to give info on a family or two. After that I may not contribute for some time at least not much.

Before concluding my post, some Attilids
20230907202536_1.jpg

The family tree is rather large with both earlier and later members and it's still lacking some known members whose connections aren't known but my intention here is just to show those who are relevant and I'll only explain them.

Edeko is either three seperate individuals with similar names who lived around the same time or a single individual. I've considered him a single individual. He was the Ambassador of Attila in 449 and the father of Odovacar/Odoacer King of Italy. Younger house of Welf also claims descent from him, if you want to add that. I've made him a son of Attila's uncle Rona (Rua, Rugila) because Odovacar was a descendant of Rua. Thela is Odovacar's son and Onoulfus is Odovacar's brother.

Giesmus, also called Gepidus is related to Attila and Ardaric, the king of the Gepids. He is thought to be Attila's son (sometimes identified as Dengizik) and either the son or husband of a female relative of Gepidus. Mundus was Magister Militum of the Eastern Roman Empire and the son of Giesmus. Mundus had a son, Mauricius a strategos of the Byzantine Empire. Mauricius had at least two children, Theodimundus who served in the Byzantine Army in his youth and an unnamed daughter who married Aruth, a Byzantine official of Herul origin.

I was going to post on the Georgian family of Chorcanellis, this post is just for starters and is based on google translation of the wikipedia article(I've just found another source while writing the post) but I have other material for later members. For example, IIRC father of Tornike Eristavi(John Tornikios) was a Chordvaneli although I'm unsure if he had a Tornike mother or the house started with him.

George Chorchanelli/Chordvanelli was the last male member of the house which was first mentioned in 9th century but is thought to go back to 8th century or before. He died childless and left his estate to the 3 sons of his sister Latavari who was married to Mirian Bahlaund. The eldest son Sula/Sulla took on the name of his maternal house, Chorchanelli. Second son, Beshken founded the house Jaqeli(which lasted well into 1800s and perhaps even after that) which had some cadet houses of it's own later on. Third son Laklak founded the house of Laklak, after himself. I couldn't find exact dates but Beshken is said to have lived in late 9th century so I think they should be children at 867 start.

The area they ruled is several baronies divided among several counties but Tao-Klarjeti is the best corresponding one.

The earliest Bahlaund mentioned is Jovan, he has a son Beshken and this Beshken is the father of Mirian, husband of Latavari.

Apart from the Chorchanellis(the new house under Sula), Jaqelis and Laklaidzes, there are two other houses known to come from them Tsikhisjvaris and Khurshidzes. Palavandishvilis are also thought to be their descendants.

Bahlaunds

Nestongos family:

Sermon the Bulgarian(or possibly Croatian) ruler of Syrmia whose name may just be a corruption of Sirmium, had a brother, Nestongos. This Nestongos may have been the ancestor of the aristocratic family Nestongos which appears in Byzantium in 11th-14th centuries. Sermon was killed by Constantine Diogenes in a parley during the siege of Sirmium which happened sometime after Ivan Vladislav's death in February 1018. His widow was taken to Constantinople and married a high official there.

However, a member of the Nestongos family, the nun Xene Nestongissa is claimed to be the daughter of Sermon and not his brother so possibly the family was called Nestongos.

Below are some more members from that time period

Maria Nestongissa, wife of a patrician during the first half of 11th century but doesn't say who her husband or father was.

Georgios Nestongos: late 11th century, early 12th century

Ioannes Nestongos: Magistros and Strategos in 1060s

Ioannes Nestongos: Proedros and Strategos in 1070-1080s. Perhaps the same as the one just above

Ioannes Nestongos: Mid 11th century, likely same as the two above

Ioannes Nestongos: 12th century, perhaps different from the ones above

A family that may have been of Slavic Origin, Rendakis/Rendakios. There isn't much besides what's on wikipedia but it lists members that are around in both start dates.

From my notes, all I got on the Martinakoi and some stuff relevant though not exactly on the Martinakoi.

I'll start with the easiest part. Theophano Martinakia. Her father was Konstantinos Martinakios, his wife died sometime after Theophano's birth and is said to have belonged to an Armenian noble family. Konstantinos had a brother, Martinos. Theophano was chosen in a bride show and the participants of the bride show were said to be chosen from Eudokia's homeland. One of the girls is mentioned to be from Athens so they should all be from around there.

Some of the rest is, well, not exactly contradicting eachother but not necessarily fit well together if you accept them all as true and could at the very least a bit confusing but a little piece of information I'll provide now may help with that:

I've previously found out that there was an Inger who is the metropolitan of Nicaea around 825. When I first learned of that I thought he may have been one of the Goths that were settled in the area and formed the Gothograeci and Inger was his name so it could show various Ingers I'll name below would be different people however it actually shows much more that, from what I understand from the source above, it is this Metropolitan's family name, considering a new arrival from Scandinavia couldn't become a priest, the family's existence in the Byzantine Empire should go back at least a generation or two.

Now for the rest:

Martinos and Konstantinos are thought to be the sons of an Inger Martinakios, who is the son of Anastasios Martinakios.

This Anastasios is thought to be the "Elder Martinakes" who married the sister (or a close female relative) of emperor Theophilos and it is theorised that he had a daughter who married an Inger/Yngvar.

Eudokia's father was Inger and her mother Melisenna Martinakios. Melisenna's father was named Theophylact.

Although their names aren't known, Eudokia had several siblings.

Melisenna was a fifth generation descendant of an Andreas Martinakios and either Melisenna or Eudokia was a ninth generation descendant of Heraclius and his niece-wife Maria.

There's an alternate theory on Eudokia's family that it was actually her father Inger who was a Martinakios and her being a Martinakios is through her father, however, even if it was the case, she can't be sister of Konstantinos and Martinos because it is said that Eudokia didn't know Theophano before the bride show and that if she was a cousin of Leo, it would be mentioned due to them being closely related.

On Inger being a Martinakios I would also like to note that there are examples of men taking on the family name of their mothers or their father-in-law. I've already mentioned that Photios' relative Bardas marrying the daughter of Konstantine Kontomytes and taking on the name Kontomytes. Another example is John Komnenos the fat who is the son of Alexios Axuoch and Maria Komnene, taking the name of his mother.

I think that's all my notes on Martinakios family. In my history files it also goes like this Andreas > Martinos > Martinakes > Theophylactos > Anastasios, however I normally scribble whatever knowledge I have next to characters I've added and if they are fictional I note that and while Andreas and Anastasios have this knowledge next to them that Anastasios is the father of Inger Martinakios and Andreas is the 5th generation ancestor of Melisenna, the three inbetween have nothing, not even a mention that they are fictional(Andreas has some generations above him with the note fictional) so I'm not sure whether I've read them somewhere or made them up myself. I'll just add that in case I haven't made them up and the 3 generations between Andreas and Anastasios are named as such.

I've found among the mess of my notes the Byzantine lady that was bugging me. It's the one that Boris had II an affair and had several children possibly including Maria the wife of Ivan Vladislav. Unfortunately I couldn't find the source and haven't written whose descendant she is supposed to be, just that she may have been a descendant of a Bulgarian from the ruling dynasty.

Anyway Some Krum/Kometopuli(Krum is more likely) who were either expelled from Bulgaria, they first went to Mysia and eventually sought refuge in Croatia, they funded a church during Drzislav's reign( 969-997). Though it is unknown when they went there, the church is built in 994.

Firstly, Sisman, I've previously mentioned that it is thought to be monastic name of Nicholas, I've since found other theories on that Sisman, that he is actually Nicholas' Cometopuli's father and that Sisman could be Simeon (Though he died in 927 so not very likely unless it's another unknown descendant also named Simeon).

Firstly the source:

https://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/BULGARIA.htm

Google translated, it goes: Bulgarian Tsarevich Pincio, nephew of Tsar Shishman, as a fugitive to the Croatian king Držislav, with his brothers and sister, with his nephews and with his son Pleso, make a contract for the construction of the church of St. Nicholas. Mihala near the town of Solin.

"In the name of Christ, amen. From the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ in the great ninety-fourth year, on the ninth day of February, at the time when the sacrilegious and profane emperor Stephen (Samuel) reigned in the land of the Bulgarians and in the other regions. But I, the man Pincius, noted and wrote for the memory of our posterity, inasmuch as we, being blood relatives of the emperor Stephen, often reproached him for his crime; for he had blinded his father, and our uncle the good Christian lord, the just emperor Sismanus; therefore he banished and expelled us brothers and our relatives from our country, that is to say, from the land of the Bulgarians, from the city of Tarnoua, but he exalted liars and rebels. But his father, being blind, rebuked him for our expulsion; but he himself strangled him, and remained under the curse of his father. But we came to Mysia, and returning thence we reached Croatia to the most illustrious and honest king Dircislaus. But he kindly received us and helped us as a good and kind lord, and placed us in the suburb of Clysium. We therefore remained there, and received the true Catholic faith, according to the institution of the Roman church. And I, Pincius, together with my brothers, that is, Armonius, Pollemius, Joanne, Celestine, and our sister Murca, and our nephews Tetralus, Martinus, Alexander, Joanne, Paulinus, Georgius, Pancratius, and my son Plesus, made a discourse and ordered it thus, namely we collected money among ourselves, and gave it to Pleso, that he might do the service of God, "

It is also noted about this "Farlati Illyricum Sacrum. T. III. p. 111. In all likelihood, this contract was originally written in the Slavic language, as Farlati also speculated, because there are no examples of Bulgarian nobles issuing documents in Latin. It can also be asserted with certainty that the translator or copyist of this document replaced the name of Samuilovo, who at this time in Bulgaria was the name of the emperor, with the name of Stjepan, because in the register the name of the emperor was probably indicated by the only letter S.; unless it is possible that Samuil, according to the custom of Bulgarian rulers, bore two names."

Charter also includes

"Plesus…cum Maria uxore mea et filiis meis…primogenito meo Dabruco, Orbasio, Petrono, Johanne et cum sorore eorum Nouata"

which translates to

Plesus... with my wife Maria and my children... my firstborn Dabrucus, Orbasius, Petronus, Johanne and with their sister Nouata"

Few things worth noting here is that Roman is still alive in 994.

Roman may have been named Roman Simeon (Remember Sisman possibly being Simeon)

Roman was castrated, however this happened after 971 and he was born in early 930s so he may very well have had some descendants as he would be in his 30s by the time he was castrated.

Samuel's reign started in 996/997

Nicholas, Samuel's father, died around 970.

Finally, before posting this, it took me over an hour, perhaps closer to two for this post going through my notes, trying to find the sources etc. and I was already tired by the time I started so if there's some confusion, something you think missing etc. please let me know and I'll take a look later on.

Edit: So according to this, If I get it right that Roman was appointed the governor of Abydos by the emperor, Abydos is in Mysia which is very interesting considering the family above first went to Mysia and from there went to Croatia.

In the below source it names Irene Sarantapechos as Irene Sarakontapechys and says the family existed well into 12th century. Irene had several known relatives, such as an uncle or cousin Constantine and his son Theophlyact, who I think may have been named after Telerig who took on the name of Theophylact and married a cousin or sister of Irene.

All I have on the Maniakes family

George Maniakes had a wife. His name Maniakes, is also suggested to be of Turkic origin, coming from an Old Turkish word Mank which means graceful. His father was named Goudelios, which is thought to be of Slavic origin. Since George is born in Macedonia and judging from the names (thought to be Slavic and Turkish) they should be Bulgarians. He had extensive lands in Anatolikon theme and his lands bordered that of Romanos Skleros, they attacked eachother and Romanos seduced George's wife ( another source, the one I posted mentioning the metropolitan from Inger family says he entered George's "oikos" and outraged his wife) George's wife, so perhaps a feud between families can also be added.

There are several members that should still be alive in 1066 start and there are members who are alive in later dates.:

A Konstantinos Maniakes in 1094

There's a Theopylact Maniakes who is a Strategos during Michael VI's reign (1057)

A Georgios Maniakes, a land owner in Thebes ( probably a different member of the family)

Alexandros Maniakes, last third of 11th century

Eudokia Maniakena, second half of 11th century

Protoedrissa is the wife of senior proedros(a court and ecclesiastic title), protoedros

Michael Maniakes, second half of 11th century

Joseph Maniakes, Tourmaches of Moglena(in Macedonia) in 11th century

Another Georgios Maniakes, last third of 11th century and first quarter of 12th century(perhaps the same as land owner above?)

Another Konstantinos from the first half of 12th century

Theodoros Maniakes, 11th century.

Some notable individuals for 1066 start who had families and possible descendants.

Elinag(also Elemagos) Phrantzes(or Frantzes), Bulgarian archon of Belegrade(Berat in Albania) in 1018 and was one of the last to submit to Byzantine Emperor. From his surname he should be French/Frankish. There notable people with the same surname in later centuries who may or may not have been his descendants considering the nature of his surname.

Gabras/Gavra. The possibility of his name being the same as Gabras family not being a coincidence but him actually belonging to the family is considered.
In 1018/19 he was accused of conspiring together with Elemag to restore the Bulgarian empire. Gabras ran, captured and blinded while Ele

Longibardopoulos, A Lombard chief who joined the Byzantine army instead of submitting to Normans. He was stationed in Macedonia During the 1072 revolt of Georgi Voiteh. He was captured by the Serbs and married to a sister of Constantine Bodin and put by them at the head of a force of Lombards and Serbs against Byzantine Empire.

Robert Crispin who fought in the Recunquista and Byzantine Empire. He was the son of Gilbert Crispin and had two older brothers, Gilbert, lord ofTilliers and William, who became lord in Neaufles and two sisters, Emma and Esilia.

Hervé Frankopoulos, a Norman Mercenary and possible founder of the Phrangopoulos family. He fought under George Maniakes in 1038-1040 to retake Sicily. In 1056 demanded the Magistros title, but was refused so he returned to his estate in Armeniac theme and gathered 300 Norman knights and went east with the intention of setting himself a state there, he was later pardoned. In 1063, Turks of Amida bribed a certain Frankopol who was possibly him as he was eventually executed sometime later.

Roussel de Bailleul the Norman who first fought under Roger de Hauteville and then went into the service of Byzantine Empire and carved his own realm in the Byzantine Empire. He had a wife and several children, though I couldn't find anything on them.

Triphyllios family

Sissinoios and Niketas were senior dignitaries during ther reign of Irene. Niketas was Domestic of the School and Sissinnios strategos of Thrace.

It still exists in 11th century

And I've also found several other members

Triphyllius, possibly the father of Sissinnios and Niketas

Konstantinos Triphyllios father of the Niketas below. He probably had several sons. He was alive during the reigns of Emperors Theophilus and Basil.

Niketas, an eunuch son of the above

Petronas Triphyllius, mentioned in 912

Trifilius, in Apulia in 999

Constantine who is asekretis and judge of Thrace (the theme Sissinnios was Strategos of) sometime in 11th century.

There's a saint Triphyllios in 4th century, although I couldn't find any connection between them, I'm sharing it since you are going with the descent from antiquity theories for the emperors so may like to do a similar thing for others as well.

A family and a character connected to two families

Family of Nikolaos Androsalites. Nikolaos recommended Basil to Komes Theophilos, a relative of Emperor Michael. When Basil came to power he promoted Nikolaos' and his brothers to high officials.

Androsalites family:
Nikolaos Androsalites whose second name may have been an epithet or family name, had 4 brothers, Paulos, Ioannes, Konstantinos and an unnamed brother who was a physician in the service of Komes Theophilos.

There's also a Petros Androsylites first mentioned in 944 who may have been related to them.

Komes Theophilos, called Theophilitzes due to his small stature. He was a relative of Emperor Michael III It is probably through Empress Theodora because he is also said to be related to Bardas, his maternal uncle. However, since Eirene is thought to be the second daughter of Bardas ( he had a "first" unnamed daughter who was the wife of Symbatios/Sabbatios the Armenian), the relation could be through marriage as well. I'd suggest the latter due to his name and there being a few people in the Amorian family tree that he could be added as a descendant to such as the known relatives of Michael II I've previously shown.

I'm slowly tidying up my notes and sources, they were more orderly than I first thought so I was able to send some stuff, with the exception of the Krum/Kometopuli post and Androsalites post, my last few posts were almost entirely from previous research, however my earliest notes are all over the place (I've been gathering stuff for near about a year now) and some of the later ones lack sources because I've been more lenient on keeping them ever since I started adding my own characters (previously I was adding sources because I was suggesting for a mod). Anyway, it's been just a week and I'm already 2 days behind my studies so I can't spare much time but I'll slowly tidy up my notes when I can to occasionally post them here.

A small one for the time being

Abessalom, judging from his name an Arab (or Jewish perhaps), strategos of Macedonia sometime in 10th century

He is possibly the same person as Abessalom, who was blinded alongside Leon Katakalitzes in 913.

This Abessalom's father is also named, Arotras.

Since a large group of Syrian Monophysites settled in Thrace by Leo IV, they could be descendants of them.

I think I may send a rather extensive (not complete) family tree for Krum and Kometopuli within the next few days. Unfortunately there are many people who are known to exist but their names unknown such as Gavril Radomir’s 5 sons and 2 daughters from his second marriage or their exact connection unknown such as a Nicholas who is the father of a kometopuli woman(can’t recall her name) who is claimed as the second wife of “Vazul” from Arpad family a granddaughter of Ivan Vladislav.

Edit: Extensive in the sense that it will include all the DYNASTIC members that I’ve found, including those who are speculated but I don’t think I’ll be able to add all the marriage connections. Two examples of speculated members would be: 1) Agatha the wife of Edward the Exile whose ancestry is a matter of debate with one theory being she was the daughter of Gavril Radomir from his first wife, the Hungarian princess that is the mother of Odelyan(Peter Delyan), though I definitely don’t think of adding her as wife to Edward.

2) Olga of Kiev I’m thinking of using both origin theories I’ve previously mentioned, being a daughter of Oleg/Helgi the Seer and a daughter of Krum family, either Vladimir Rasate or (IIRC) Simeon. Since I couldn’t find anything on Vladimir Rasate’s first wife (Kupetra, the goddaughter of Boris Mihail is his 2nd) and we have knowledge of Simeon’s children from both marriages, I’ll make her a daughter of Vladimir Rasate and a daughter to Helgi as a first wife of Vladimir Rasate, making her a descendant of both Oleg and the Krum family, incorporating, in some manner, both theories.

Pincius and his family I think of making them sons of Roman the son of Peter because Roman’s castration by the Byzantines is thought to have happened late at life, meaning he could’ve had children and he was made a governor of Abydos which is in Mysia where Pincius and his family first went in their exile before going to Croatia.

For the Kometopuli I considered making them descendants of Gavril the brother of Vladimir Rasate and Simeon prior to finding Pincius, but After finding him I’ll think some more on them.

Since I'm slowly tidying up my notes, I've come across two things that I should correct/add

first is Anna the daughter of Boris Mihail marrying Tarkan Simeon the close royal relative. I misremembered it, Anna is indeed married to Tarkan Simeon but his not named as a relative, his name was among a list of people with their titles/relations etc. and it's a Stefan who is the royal relative.

The relative part on the quote goes as this

"we see such leading figures as Kavhan Sursuvul himself, Ichirgu-boila Mostich, the unknown named "minik " and "magotin" (senior military commanders),
the sampsis ("head" of the palace office) Tarkan Simeon, the close royal relative (first cousin?) Stefan, etc."

Second is the Byzantine Lady Boris II was married/had an affair to. I didn't find anything in my notes saying whose descendant she is supposed to be but I remembered it after finding about another Bulgarian from the royal family who was exiled to Byzantine Empire in a very recent time. Ivan, the brother (possibly older brother) of Peter and uncle of Boris II rebelled against Peter in 928 and after his rebellion failed he fled to Constantinople and there he married a noblewomen of Armenian origin.

Since I mentioned Boris II, I also found among my notes two claims for Maria, one is she is the daughter of Boris as I've previously mentioned and the second is that she is a descendant of Kourkuas, Aballantes and Phokas families. The second one unfortunately I didn't have the source noted (neither for the first one but it was easy to find a source for it again).

An update on this, I'm almost done with adding members for the Krum/Kometopuli with a few things to do remaining, I'll check if there's anyone I've missed in my notes try to assaign better birth and death dates and also want to do something I haven't done for the previous history files I've sent, make sure they are based solely on the base game. I may, at a later (much later) date also work on the Amorians, Justinians, Heraclians and anyone else I've sent so far to also make them completely based on the vanilla game. I'll also take a look at the Dulos, at least the Danube branch and add some members both historical and fictional, namely Alzec and Kuber and descendants for them.

I'm planning to add Guberioi as descendants to Kuber (who doesn't exist in the game if I recall) since their name is considered to have come from Kuber.

And also to add fictional descendants to Alzek since Bulgars in Benevento during Paul the Deacon's life time still spoke their own language in addition to Latin

There's also a Mauros family, I don't know if all the several different Mauros are the same family but one of them has Bulgar origins

I'm still -slowly- working on Dulo/Krum/Kometopuli which will take more time, I'll probably send them piecemeal with Krum first as it has the least amount of people to add, Kometopuli second as the work on them is near complete but I'm not comfortable with birth/death dates and finally Dulo because it will involve a number of fictional characters. I may post a family tree for Sarantapechos up to 867 start sooner than these as there are very few members to add for them.

In the mean time A family tree for Attilids. It lacks marriage connections that I've found and some historical members that were known to be members of the family. I've made them from Dulo family due to claims of coming from Ernak, you can change the dynasty or just use the bits that feel relevant.

Firstly, Dulo: I was going to add a fictional line of Alzeko to represent his group of Bulgars still preserving their identity in Benevento as mentioned previously.

Gubers: I've made Guberioi a cadet of Dulo as their name is thought to come from Kuber. I've added as few fictional persons as I could, some names are existing persons with no known connection to family but added due to their name.

Krum family: Dukum I was going to make a Krum, as I did in my personal submod but didn't here, though any descendants of Krum I've made Krum ( In game Krum dynasty starts with Presian). Again, there are some fictional characters but as few as possible.

Pincius and his relatives I'll add later on, as descendants to Roman due to reasons stated previously.

Kometopuli I'll add later on due to them having a lot of members that are known to have existed but have neither names nor birth/death dates such as most of Ivan Vladislav's 6 sons and 6 daughters.

I'll probably add Vitalian and John's family in a couple of days, they are related to Justinian dynasty through John's marriage to Justina, daughter of Germanus, have also done a little more work on Anastasius' family but not yet done, it will possibly be after Kometopuli which I can't give a time yet.

Note, I haven't had the oppurtunity to check for mistakes so you may want to do that.

Edit: and already spotted some, corrected them mostly, but Dulos need to be added their father and can't do it atm.
