When the World Stopped Making Sense

A Migrational Era mod for CK3. This mod builds upon the existing WtWSMS mod for CK2, which you may or may not be already familiar with (if not, do not hesitate to check it out, CK2 is free!). It aims to represent the period known as the Early Middle Ages, Late Antiquity or "Dark Ages", with start dates in 476, 535 and much more.

Features

  • New bookmarks and timeline, play between 476 and 800, with all emblematic dates being featured
  • Complete redesign of the culture map, dozens of new cultures with accompanying melting-pots
  • Overhauled religions, with unique heresies and schisms, ranging from Christian church councils to the Rise of Islam
  • A unique government system with transitions and continuities, from Bureaucratic, Gupta and Sassanid rulers to Sub-Roman realms becoming Feudal
  • Dynamic decisions and events giving birth to new empires and leading to the implosion of old realms
  • Migration mechanics designed dynamically to give choice to players and the AI, with special features for Slavic tribes
  • Decaying Roman legions, reconquest mechanics and foederatus contracts
  • Flavour events to give a distinct feeling while playing in all regions across the map
  • Play in your language of choice - full translations for English, French and Spanish

Great one! Was hoping this will happen and I'm looking forward to see this developing.

And of course, if you want/need some help, you know where to ask (I guess you will want to rework the map from the scratch, or at least from a large part, right?

Hey! Nice to see you're back in CKIII Loup!

Much of the reason why I didn't play the CKII version of the mod was due to the use of the mostly vanilla map, but since I actually like the vanilla map for CKIII (at least until SWMH for CKIII is released) I'll definitely check it out once released!

Thanks a lot.
If the name is more manageable, that would be nice.
If anyone has a great suggestion for an alternative name they can provide it in this thread, otherwise I think we will probably keep the existing one.

I offer my help too if you want help for the map. I have a lot of academical historical maps to offer and stuff like that.
Thank you both for the offers. On the map, it will not be the top priority at this time, since the idea is to first ensure there is a working base, with cultures, religions and history, and then add new things on top of that. Afterwards I think a good approach could be to go through maps from the period in detail and compare with the vanilla one and see which areas could see a decrease in settlements and if others need an increase, but given the density of the current map I would rather consider it as border tweaks and name changes than restarting from scratch. For CK2 we already worked extensively on identifying what settlements existed or not within the old provinces. That being said, the de jure and landed titles that go with it will naturally be entirely custom. This is naturally up for discussion however, if someone is particularly determined to redo the map completely that can be an option, but at the moment it is not the plan.

Well, just as previously the mod will not use or require any other map mod like SWMH, unless a specific "Migrational Era" map is made and we get a permission. But I hope the changes we inevitably will make to the vanilla map will make it feel like a unique experience nonetheless.

PLEASE consider a start date around 395, I think a lot of people wish to play through the fall of the Roman Empire, and the transition from Rome to a patchwork of warring barbarian kingdoms was quite quick. It only took the western part around 80 years to collapse after the split, that's one or two character lifetimes, so it'd be really fun take a part of that and have your domain survive the collapse. Internal governmental divisions would be quite easy to put into the mod, as there are highly detailed maps.

Please consider it! And good luck.

Early start dates, such as 395, will be considered for the future, and this project for CK3 has received the permission of @IlikeTrains to use the additional history from his EBS sub-mod in CK2. However I want to make it clear that a 395 start date would still require a lot of work, so it is not going to be the main priority, unless someone else joins the project and decides to work exclusively on that.

When the World Stopped Making Sense 2.
;)

Translatio imperii - the Struggle for the Legacy of the Empire

Regna barbara - Barbarian Kingdoms
Thank you for your input, we will consider all suggestions together with those who contributed in the past in CK2 or signal their interest to participate in the project for CK3. The concept of Translatio imperii is nonetheless one theorised and employed for later periods of the game, while the ERE existed continuously throughout the period.

When the World Stopped Making Sense 2.

I think it was a great title for the original mod and I find it likewise fitting for your carry-over to CK3.
It just captures so much more than the mere fact some borders have been drastically redrawn in that timeframe.
For contemporaries the continuous onslaught of barbarian hordes must really have felt as the dawning apocalypse that not only replaced rulers and split some realms, but that changed customs & cultures, religions, the sense of being-civilized in a certain manner and so forth.
It must really have felt as if the "world stopped making sense" and it was not yet clear which no "sense" were to emerge.
So please keep it as is.

Sidenote: I am super-happy you are carrying over to CK3. Alongside other major overhauls who have also announced their migration, it really feels as if the whole CK-family is gathering around a new fire. Somewhat comforting.
I wish you all luck & perseverance & success you can get hold of. :)

Thank you for the kind words.

Not sure if this is a right translation but here's my idea for a name.

Age of Barbarians - Barbari Annis

Barbarian age - Tempore Barbara

I also liked Regna Barbara like suggested above.

You have to remember that the new barbarian Kings often tried to uphold Roman laws especially in Italy. This was a slow decline and not a sudden crash of the empire that was totally unforeseeen. It slowly fizzled out and already in the mid 5th century the emperors barely had any control. The Roman people were used to new rulers coming and leaving and there was no strong reaction from the ERE, they even acknowledged Odacaer. For the common citizen nothing changed much and would only slowly. Your perspecitve seems more common with enlightenment attitudes rather than contemporary atittudes in the 5th century.
