lets see because this is starting to get me and my nerves :(

I own a laptop, P4 1.7Ghz, with windows XP as OS. I've been unable to play EU2 because it CTDs all the time...and now I've got EXACTLY the same CTD problem with HoI.

Description (both EU2 and HoI):

-I can't hit "start" button, because the program CTDs

-Each time I go into "Options" creen and I hit "Back" button, it CTDs.

I repeat, this happens both with EU2 and HoI... I can't even start a game because it drops me to desktop first.

Please I need help. I thought this was some kind of Win XP compatibility problem with EU2, and now I find I have JUST the same problem with HoI (which I guess, is well tested under Win XP).

thanks in advance.

Note...duplicate thread also posted by RAM in the EU2 support forum. The solution will likely be indentical...

RAM, take your pick of which thread to follow and we'll close the other one.

thanks for the fast answer, disk killer...

Mr.T, if you wish close the thread in the EU2 forum, but please provide a link here so ppl can answer if they have a proper answer :)

ok, lets see...

Version of Hearts of Iron you are using (US, Nordic, UK, French, etc. OR preferably the name of the publisher eg. Stategy First.)

US version (bought via an imports shop)

Also the patch number you are using like 1.01,1.02,etc)

1.01

Operating system (Windows 9x, Windows Me, etc.)

Windows XP

CPU & speed

laptop, P4 1.7Ghz

Memory (the more you have, the better you will be!)

224mb RAM

Free hard disk space on the drive EU is installed

8.32Gb

Video Card brand and model number

SiS 650, driver version 6.13.10.2079

Sound Card brand and model number

Avance AC97 audio, driver version 5.10.0.3830

CD-ROM or DVD-ROM brand and model number (firmware if you know it could also be useful)

QSI DVD/CDRW SBW-161. driver version 5.1.2535.0

Ethernet card (network card) brand and model number

Fast Ethernet SiS 900-based PCI.

Couple more notes. There's another way where I also get CTD-ed. In nation selection screen, if I hit a flag with right button, when I select another flag, the game CTD-s.

Finally,I followed the advices in the link you gave, but there are a couple problems I have, namely that I can't run DXdialog (There's no such file in my c:/Windows/system). I can't follow any of the advices related with the CD drive, because when I go to device manager the options to turn down aren't there (I mean, I can't change the CD cache to 470k because I see no such option)

I've already turned down the sound card. The game still crashes under the same conditions.

Sorry for my english, hope you understand everything :)

Thanks again for the help...I hope we can get this problem sorted out soon :)

I can't run DXdialog (There's no such file in my c:/Windows/system).
DXDIAG.EXE -- it should be there. if it ain't there, try to reinstall DirectX 8.1 as that is likely to be your problem (a messed up installation of DX)

they're elsewhere in XP. I once found them by accident but I can't anymore  I'll try to find it again later tonight.

Have you updated your OS with SP1? You should be running XP with 5.1 build 2600.

Are you running DirectX 8.1 (4.08.01.0810)?

To look at and adjust your DirectX settings go to: Start-->run and type dxdiag.exe

For CD...go to Start-->My Computer. Right click on the CD drive icon and select properties. Select the "hardware" tab, highlight the drive in the list (it might be the only item listed in your system) and then click "properties" and select the "policies" tab. You can probably disable read-ahead from there, even if you can't adjust the cache size.

EDIT: Another question: Where exactly are your crashes happening with EU2? During the game or on start-up?

heya again, MrT :)

DxDiag.exe was in Windows/system32 ;) I've ran it, all tests passed, music, graphics, etc.

Yes, I've already downloaded the SP1 from microsoft. DX 8.1 in my system, Dxdiag shows exactly the 4.08.01.0810 version.

About the CD, again, I see no "policies" Tab. I do as you say, and I see several tabs...General, Properties, Region (for the DVD), files and drivers (maybe the names aren't well trasnlated, but those are more or less what they say ;)). There's no "policies" tab anywhere.

With EU2 the CTDs are EXACTLY identical to those in HoI. The game starts fine, I get into main menu, I get into single player mode, I try to start a game, and kaboom. Or I try to modify options and when I hit "Back" ,kaboom. Or when I try to change a country to select it, I right click on a shield (flag in HoI), and as soon as I select one and left click on it, kaboom...

I used to think that EU2 problem was with Win XP, but that can't be with HoI...and the crashes are identical so the solution should be,too...(please tell me this has solution! :( )

Turn the music off.
Rename the AVI folder to AVIback.

Are you running anything else in the background?
Who makes the chip on the SiS 650 card?

Please bear with us as we grill you with questions, we are each just trying to eliminate potential issues. :)

not a problem, Castellon...I very much appreciate any feedback I may receive, I don't mind answering any questions, if that helps fixing this problem :)

The builder of the SiS card...is...well, SiS ;).
I'm not all that familiar with this kind of video devices as I'm working on a newly bought laptop...just until 1 month ago I had nil knowledge about laptops (I was very happy playing EU2 with my PC at home, but now I'm studying away so... ehehe)

I don't run anything in the background, I close all the programs I can before clicking on the HoI icon, yet the game still crashes in the same way, just as with EU2.

What brand of laptop is it?

just a note to say I don't have that option on my system... Policies appear for HDDs but not for my CD-ROM.

I clearly remember a place in XP where I could change the "use DMA" thing, but I can't find it now... I'm not as familiar with XP as I was with Me

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware (tab) -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Primary (or) Secondary IDE Channel -> Advanced Settings (tab)

After working on our company's XP project for six months, I better know where it is! ;)

Aha! Now I remember :) Thanks a lot :)

I'll modify the support FAQ tonight :)

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarggg....I'm going to die if this goes on...

well, now the game doesn't crash, now it just doesn't start anymore.

I dowloaded the most updated drivers for EVERYTHING ranging from my video card to the DVD/CDRW unit...and now I get a nice "Please insert the correct CD in the drive"...when I've got the CD already there.

I've already changed the DMA thingie, game still doesn't start.

I'm getting a nasty feeling that my computer is laughing at me... :)

now seriously, what is happening now?

Ok, now try to uninstall HOI, and then reinstall it. That might just work....... (I hope!)
