Hmm.... real strange stuff.

Can you log on as someone else and try again? I know you're supposed to have admin privileges but maybe your user account has become.... corrupted? Event ID 1000 is a pretty strange error to be getting for sure, we see them at work related to GPO problems.....

If there is no one else to log in as you may have to go create a new user account with admin access and then try that one, and then see what happens with HOI... give it a try, and let us know!

RAM:

I've been hesitant to go this route but since we're running out of viable options I think we'd better look at the two most likely problems that could be causing your problem with HoI (and EU2).

The two leading candidates and solutions remaining are:
  • some sort of buried corruption of your basic OS system files somewhere that is, for some reason, not causing a problem with other applications. The unfortunate but obvious solution to this is to “do the nasty” and erase and reformat your hard drive, reinstall Windows, etc…..the ol’ clean sweep that should destroy anything and everything that might be lurking in the silicon shadows but is more than a bit of a chore.
  • The other candidate is one where you’ve got an illegal copy of the game. I want to make it perfectly clear that I am not suggesting that you are intentionally trying to run pirated software. I am wondering whether there’s any possibility that you have been sold an illegal copy by a not-so-honest vendor? If that’s the case then I’m afraid that nothing we do will resolve your problem and you’ll have to return it (if you can) and wait for the Spanish version – or buy the NA version from a reputable dealer.

Since we’re doing this “long distance” I can’t look at your CD to determine if it’s a legit copy. Can I ask you to please PM me with an exact description of the exact text and logo and placement on the front of the disk? If you have a scanner and want to e-mail a bmp or pdf of it instead, send it to me here.

Those are the only two remaining causes/solutions that I can think of. I know that the first one is a real pain to do but may be your only remedy; and as for the second I will reitterate that I am not in any way accusing you of trying to use pirated software...just exploring the possibility that you may have been sold some.

Keep us posted.

Erm...well...humm...

how to say this after having received so much help :D...but the game is now working!. The problem is that I feel a bit stupid because the solution was so easy...even while I still can't understand why it didn't run before.

What did the trick?...I know somebody will kill me for not doing it since it was posted, but I installed 1.02...and the game runs fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (don't ask me why, but with 1.01 it DOES NOT run, and was the version I was trying to start all the time)

So I'm now playing HoI !!! FINALLY!!!! :) :D

HOWEVER...

EU2 still doesn't work. So I guess this thread isn't over yet...It still crashes as described.

thanks to all for the help received!. You RULE!.

BTW I can rule out that the problem was with the game itself. Mostly because I installed it some days ago on a friend's PC and it ran OK. The problem is with my computer, there's no doubt about it.

EU2 ran fine at my home's PC so it isn't an issue with the game itself, either. Something's screwed on my laptop that makes the game CTD.

Finally, and about the game being original, this is one of many games I've bought at the store where I bought HoI...I doubt it's not a legit copy, as I trust them. BTW, no offense taken at all on my side. Frankly, I was surprised at this possible cause not being raised before :).

I just hope now that the spanish copy also works fine on my system...still not on the stores, maybe tomorrow or next monday I'll have it on my hand! :) :)

And thanks again for the help!...Lets see if we can solve the EU2 problem too (I hope not having to do a formatting of my CD drive... seeing that HoI now works, I really hope EU2 also will have a fix somehow :))

now if you excuse me I have a nation to rule so it can win a war, ehehehehehe :D

It wasnt raised because you appear to be a sincere and polite. person.
It was raised as a last resort but was directed at the importers being the offenders and not you :)

Woohoo! All's well that ends...well, I suppose we're not at the end yet are we.

Okay, now that HoI's running nicely let's see what we can figure out with EU2.

I think that maybe the best bet is to go over to the EU2 support forum for that one and leave the nice HoI Support types in peace for a while. :) I've unlocked the other thread you started originally and put a few suggestions in there for you to have a look at. Let's play with it there.:) I'll keep an eye on the thread, and when you can tear yourself away from HoI we'll take a stab at it. :)

Yay team!

Oh...and as UD says, your patience and good-natured outlook during this long process - which has undoubtedly been far more frustrating for you than it has been for us - definitely gives us all the impression that the last thing you'd be doing is pirating software, hence I was really reluctant to bring it up and risk offending you. I'm very glad that we're all on the same page. :)
