Can somebody explain very quickly what is the point of SPAA-powered space marines? Why this option is so popular, especially as opposed to SPG or normal tank variants?
To take advantage of the combat equations, basically.

Armor (and piercing) of the highest value unit counts extra (the average of the division contributes 60%, but one unit contributes 40% of the stat!) in battle calculations, so one souped-up unit will carry extra weight on those 2 stats.

So having an oddball “optimized” unit thrown in there you can increase certain stats a bit unnaturally without affecting the average stats too much…

If you make it AA, you optimize a little less, but you also get to hit CAS. It seems most people decided the trade off is worth it.

To give you another example, I used to play where I would convert my light tanks to add fuel drums, then put my light tanks exclusively on recon brigades (slow recon units didn’t affect division speed), so my armored divisions would have extra fuel reserves in combat without slowing down my medium tanks with fuel drums. I forgot about that trick before just now. I wonder if that still works with the latest combat meta.
