The USSR has a lot of ground to cover and needs to recruit a lot of infantry, while having lots of manpower. Many players like to build cheaper infantry equipment in this case. Upgrading is worthwhile, particularly to equip your spearhead units, but it's not worth sacrificing your ability to equip your forces. Start producing the upgrades when your army is equipped and you have enough of a reserve to keep it that way.

As it happens, there's currently a discussion of this topic going on a bit further down the forum:

So, is it normal to have 2 world wars in this game?
I'm on only my second campaign and this is whats happened.

I'm america, we have the traditional WW2 and defeat Italy and Germany in 1941, and Japan, in 1942. Spain joins the Comintern after the war. The Soviets turn Germany and Poland into the Comintern. We turn Italy and Japan into democratic nations. In 1943, the Soviets attack a very weakened Japan, then Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Afghanistan as well as the Chinese nations allied to Japan. At some point, the Japanese join the Allies. This sparks a global conflict larger than the world war I just won.

It's me (USA), UK, France, Italy, Japan and numerous other nations versus the Soviets, Germany, Spain and their Comintern Bloc.

Is this normal?

Yeah, pretty much. The WT being incredibly high means countries will justify without 2nd thought. Throughout WW2, different blocs have formed and with the situation so explosive, the game geared towards war with national focuses, it tends to go to hell soon after.

No. Since the AI template rework in 1.3.0 the AI will modify its templates according to the targets specified in ai_templates and only then does it consider how to produce the needed equipment. In other words the equipment stock pile doesn't inform the template design, unless where it's explicitly coded as such (afaict nowhere).

I've yet to see any indication that ship experience does anything but showing a pretty skull icon. Neither did I see references to XP when going through the naval combat code recently nor do I get significantly favorable results when pitting the same number/class of green ships vs veteran ships.
Ach so, the first part makes sense. Guess i can just add AA support to all my garrisons. :p

That second part is a bummer though, seeing ship experience pay off would be cool.

Thank you for your answers! :)

Yes and yes. The AI will occasionally be suicidal, but works much better than 1.0. Obviously they still plan on tweaking it.
I played a few months ago and they didn't seem able to design effective divisions. I've definitely noticed their suicidal tendencies, it's very easy to encircle an ungodly number without even microing your tanks. But even outnumbered, my divisions always destroy whatever they have. It really sucks cause I spend so much time building up for war, that's the only fun part of the game for me, and then it's just like, roll through a whole country in 3 months. No matter where on the map I'm fighting, my divisions never encounter significant resistance without a huge numbers disadvantage.

So I was always expecting AI to be the number one priority, and that doesn't seem to be the case.

Yes, at least if you care to play after the first one. There are three major factions, so usually two gang up on one, and then the remaining two settle their differences. But sometimes it can be a three-way brawl.

I find the possibility, or even likelihood, appealing during the first "traditional" war, because it helps keep you in the mindset of fighting in a way not just to knock out one opponent, but also with a view to the geopolitical result after the war ends. Historically, that was a significant factor that influenced a lot of major directions, so I find it nice to have a reason to care about more than just minimaxing the combat system equations, but sometimes wind up doing odd things not to win this war, but to better position yourself or deprive your potential future enemy in the second one.

Playing as Germany, I can get 5 dockyards via focuses in Schleswig-Holstein, but there are already 6. With dockyards having a limit of 10 per state, would one of these additional dockyards just go to waste or how does it work?

Port is limited to 10. I have had more than 10 naval dockyards in one state before.
I see, thanks!
Well, after loading the save again, the states the dockyards would have been built in were changed, so I think it doesn't matter anymore. But it's still good to know.

Which reminds me that I wanted to file a bug report about that looong time ago... At least it "feels" like a bug.

I think this has been reported before or at least talked about by a dev. I don't remember the details, but I am pretty sure that at some point they considered it to not be a big problem. Maybe because it always happen in a core state.

Fuzzy memory...

Some quickies:

1) Is there any option to limit an air wing to using only specific aircraft equipment (interwar fighters for volunteers for example) like we can do with divisions?

2) Is the wiki still correct in attesting line arty a +25% SA bonus while support arty gets none?

Thanks in advance!

1) You can prioritize or de-prioritize a wing, so it gets either the newest or the oldest equipment. If you are floating in aircraft, even your de-priotirized wings get new equipment

2) no, support artillery gets a nerf. 36 guns from the line Arty do the damage you see at the technology tab (25 soft attack at the '36 tech), the 12 guns in support Arty do the damage from the technology tab - 40% (25-10= 15 soft attack).

the bonus was taken away in the last patch:

Hi Holdy,

thanks for your swift reply! ;)

So i have to stick to my workaround of lowering wing size of some other wings, absorb the twin deckers into a bigger volunteer wing and then increase size of the other wings so they will take the newer stuff produced in priority...

Thanks for clarifying the support arty nerf. Being a SP player only i got confused by the often cited 'new' meta that liny arty would have lost it's superior value. But indeed staying power of a div in combat pays off in the long run...

You have a nice avatar btw.

You probably should still use Arty in your line divisions. Only Inf Equipment might even lose in the defence against a division with line Arty.

You have a nice avatar btw.

Thanks, you too !

Nukes.

Will building more nuclear reactors increase the rate that nuclear weapons are produced?

Are Stats the only way to use them or will ballistic missiles become an option later?
